Title: Avast! causing "Black Screen with working mouse pointer" in Windows 8 Pro 32 Bit
Post by: Ravigurram on December 15, 2012, 09:53:53 AM

Hi all ,
I have upgraded my PC from Windows XP Professional service pack 3  to Windows 8 Pro 32 bit .  I have installed " avast! free antivirus 7.0.1474 " and also updated its virus definitions . When I restarted the PC  , avast! stops Windows 8 from booting . After the user login page , a  " Black Screen with working mouse pointer " appears . Nothing appears more than this . Uninstalling avast! in safe mode and restarting again boots up Windows 8 in normal mode without any problem . I have been using for more than 2 years and never had a problem with avast! . Now avast! is troubling me . Does any one of you have a fix for this problem so that avast! can be used without any problem in windows 8 ??
Please help me out .
Thank you .

1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

1. Well, you've to disable it under W8, as it's a full AV now.
2. You could post an OTL log. (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0)

After a brief look (have to go soon) I didn't find anything, I'll have a closer look later in the day.

FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN'T ACCESS TASK MANAGER(Crash) or SAFE MODE, I HAVE FOUND ANOTHER METHOD..

After login, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del then, click on the Power button. It'll show some error, click OK.
Then, there will be an Error Report. Click on More Details, Scroll down & click on the last Hyperlink (Blue, underlined test). This will open text report in Wordpad.
Click File -> Open. Select All Documents from the dropdown menu at the right-bottom of the window.
Browse to "C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast" & look for AvastUI, Right-click on it & Run as Administrator..
Now you can add the explorer.exe & SystemSettings.exe to Behavioral Shield exceptions as mentioned everywhere.. Restart...
Enjoy!!
