Title: corrupt registry fixed with rescue disc, installed Avast ... <<< SOLVED >>>
Post by: Thewizard on December 19, 2012, 12:18:53 AM
Hi,
Please, I am new to this forum so go gently with me.
I downloaded some new security updates for Windows XP but when I rebooted the PC refused to boot, even in safe mode.
I got into the recovery console and looked into how to do a manual "restore" but then I remembered I had an Avast! rescue disc, so I tried this.
I repaired the registry, and removed junk files etc. with the rescue disc , then the computer successfulyl rebooted into Windows XP Pro.
Except I think I went a bit to harshly with the settings, because when I clicked on Avast! icon I got:

Failed to init aswData.dll 126/126

So now I thought I would just download it again on top of the old version and hope it sorted out any dependency issues.
I started to do that then I spotted a new version Avast 7 on your site, so I downloaded that instead.
Now I don't understand because it installed successfully but I could not insert my license key, despite having a 3 computer version of the key (which I had already installed on my computer, and my mother's, which makes 2 keys, so I should still have one key left.)

So I am now running the free version despite having paid for the Pro version.

Please any help gratefully received!

"Unable to insert license key. license has expired."

Like, I only purchased it a month ago?

Oh yeah and I get another message now every time I boot up:

Outlook Express erro unable to open message store ox80040154, 14007

Thanks.

P.S. Oh yeah I forgot, now when I go to "Scan Now" I just get a blank window inside the antiivurs window where there should be scan options.

Sorry to multiple post.

I have now sorted out the license problem, I got it sent to my email address again, downloaded the link, and it worked fine.

However I still have the scanner options missing in the main program. (See .jpg link below).
I can't explain this since I downloaded Avast! 7 as a fresh installation, (even though I had deleted some packers from the previous installation in my over-zealous expunging of my corrupted registry files)

Thanks in advance.

Try a repair of avast!:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

If this doesn't help, try a clean reinstall:
1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

to answer the last questions:

1) Avast Internet Security- the not-free version (sorry not Pro as it turned out once I had inserted my key)
2) 7.0.1474
3) 32 Bit Xp Pro SP3
4) Malwarebytes, and Microsoft Security Esentials

I think I might have answered my own question thanks to your questions because I think I downloaded Avast! Pro on top of Avast! Internet Security which could have created a conflict which is why the scan section is blank. This would also explain why, initially it wouldn't accept the license key.

Having a second resident antivirus installed Microsoft Security Essentials, isn't likely to be helping the cause.

Having two resident anti-virus scanners installed is one too many and not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.

You should uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials! Never use 2 resident AV-Programs at the same time!

First, drop MSE..!!!

Then:
1. Download avast! Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

You can use the Modify button in your first post and add [Solved] to the Subject.

Ah okay. Actually it was solved but now I have managed to break that computer's software, and it won't boot any more. ( see my post about an interrelated WIndows XP issue here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic479361.html (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic479361.html) in another fourm.) Since it was Windows XP and very old I am willing to write it off. However, since my anti virus is about to expire on my other Windows machine, I will be uninstalling it and installing Avast! instead on one of its licenses.

EDIT: Limited success! :-) Did a "system Restore" from recovery console and XP now boots again.

Hi , Sorry to multiple post, maybe I should start a new topic because I have a new issue with Avast! on my Windows XP computer?
Anyway I now get a message from Avast! antivirus which says "Firewall not switched on" (see attached screen dump.)
I have tried switching it on but get the message in the picture below.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

If You installed recovery console from windows xp as a second boot choice. Or have a xp cd rom, run recovery console and on administrator password (normally none set. IE BLANK JUST PRESS ENTER).
At the  c:\ prompt.      TYPE CHKDSK /P  & REPAIR SYSTEM FILES AND YOU SHOULD GET BACK TO WINDOWS AFTER CHKDSK HAS RUN. Windows cd needs to be in all the time in recovery console mode.

I am running free version and using windows xp firewall and having no problems. You could just try the free version after uninstalling the paid version? just as good!

Hi bobo1, thanks for the advice. Sorry to seem stupid but please can you confirm that I type the following in the recovery console:

CHKDSK /P

?
,...and this will fix the Avast firewall, Right?

Thanks.

bobo1, thanks for your advice, windows did find and fix some errors, but still no luck with the Avast!  firewall or with the other problem (possibly related) with XP reported in Bleeping Computer forum:- http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic479361.html (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic479361.html)
