Title: standard shield
Post by: Cochise on September 12, 2003, 02:59:13 AM
I have just updated to 4.1:Home edition and noticed that after opening the Avast menu to recheck my settings  that the standard shield icon is not there. I see the p2p, mail, outlook, and instant messaging icons only. Was it moved elsewhere or did I have a bad update?

Make sure that the panel slide is all the way down.
Mine shows fine unless the slide is up.

If it does not show, then a bad INSTALL may be the cause, not necessarily the download itself.

You can then try an uninstall and reinstall.

If that fails, come back to us for some more things to try.

Good luck  :)

Hi,
Same here.
I'm running windows 98 SE and did a clean install of avast 4.1.
1) The tray icon  takes a long time to appear.
2) No standard shield
3) only 4 icons as listed in the preious post.
4) I tried to run the eicar test file and it did run and avast did not do anything .

I had the same problem after upgrading to the latest version (4.1.60).
But it was fixed after uninstalling the program, deleting "..\Program files\Alwil" folder and reinstalling it again..
(Eicar file was cought ;)  )

Whoever still has the same problem - I'd need some help. Could you please ZIP the whole avast directory (with subfolders) and get it to me? To expose it on some web/ftp site for download would be optimal. Also, please let me know what OS you're using.

Thanks

Update: we don't need the ZIPed folder anymore. We've found a machine with such symptoms. Now we can take a look at it.

Thanks, anyway

Guys, how did you do the update?
I mean, from the program (via Internet) using its built-in updater, or by downloading the latest installation EXE and running it?

Our investigation so far indicates that the problem only occurs if you do the update by running the setup EXE file (and not by using the built-in updater). Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Thanks

You're right, Vlk..  ;)
First I updated the program by downloading the latest installation EXE and running it (4.1.259).
Then the iAvs component upgraded the program from 4.1.259 to 4.1.260..
the resident scanner did not load in both cases  ??? ??? till -as I said- I uninstalled the program , deleted its installation folder the run then setup file again.

Same here,
I uninstalled avast, used avclear4.exe and then downloaded the new setup file for 4.1 and installed it.

...and now it's OK again?

So previously you were updating from the setup EXE as well...?

Nope . Not ok
The standard shield is still disabled (No tray icon and not catching eicar).

Actually  i wanted a copy of the setup on my disk. So, instead of using the built in updater, I uninstalled avast, Cleaned it using avclear4(after uninstalling just to be sure) and then installed avast using the installation file.

Disabled or missing?
Also can you please send the file <avast>\setup\setup.log to

forejt at avast dot com ?

And please insert a link to this thread in the mail.

Thanks,
Vlk

Update:
Apparently the tray icon has become visible and the standard shield seems to be working :)
I'll reboot and see if any problem comes up.
Thanks for the support

The problem seems to be stranger than i thought.
The standard shield and other services do start up but only after a delay of about 8-10 minutes .

I'm getting this message in the error log of avast.

AAVM - initialization error: Aavm/RPC: RpcEpRegister failed (30 retries), 0000076B.

I have it now but had to un-install the program. I did not use Avast Clear but by just using the add/remove program in Win98se and then manually deleted the Avast folder before reinstalling. I downloaded the Avast set up program and ran it at which time everything showed as updated but I noticed the standard shield program was missing. It seems to be working fine now.

Oops that is strange. The error code 76B is "The endpoint mapper database entry could not be created. "

I have absolutely no idea what it means. ;)

Haven't you applied some RPC-related security patches recently?
Or something that may be related to this problem? There is really nothing new in this piece of code in av4.1

Thanks

Like I said before, the Avast shield is starting up but after a long delay so my system is unprotected for about 10 minutes after starting.
And i dont recall having patched win 98 with any RPC related patches.

Problem solved.
Sorry for the trouble folks.
The problem was traced to a missing rpcss.exe

Now that ive restored it there is no dealy in starting up and all providers are working. :)

Thanks for the support

can somebody tell me

is better update using the program update click on the icon on system tray and download the incremental files?

or download the full program?

dcliff, I'm glad we've fixed this.

mantra, right now it's better to use the built-in updater. There are some problems with updates from the setup EXE file (at least under Win9x). Of course, reinstallation would do as well but it shouldn't be necessary.

Vlk, the file vpsupd.exe (update file) cannot be applied to version 4.1.260: Error: 0x00000008 (only works with previous version)...  ???
The updates from Internet are Ok for my XP...  ;)

I did the update via the built-in updater and had no problem whatsoever.
