It is on by default.

What exactly do you mean?
And provide more details please, we are not mindreaders.

I asked support why my outlook express 6 would not scan
they said to turn on my internet mail shield.

I dont know how to find the internet mail shield.  I have been to the help menu   I have been on my providers.  I have been into about avast   I have been into on access protection control.  I dont know where to look.  I am sorry but avast has been very confusing to me.

Click on the avast icon, click on Internet Mail and if Start button is Bold, click it.

Ok I have 2 internet mail shields
I dont know why It might have come from all my trying different things

One   The start is in bold  and it says no task currently using this provider and there is nothing about scanning on the bottom

The other one the terminate is in bold  and it says waiting for sub system to start and on the bottom it says task name resident protection and a time running   That is also the one where the customize says no access

Apparently one should be deleted and the other one fixed but which is which and should the other one be deleted and how.

If I use stop provider wont it take both of them away

I would suggest that you try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

If that doesn't resolve it and I think that is a distinct possibility, then uninstall, reboot, install and see if that resolves.
