Hi,
I'm having a problem with my screen resolution. The native resolution in Windows 8 Pro with my monitor should be 1680 x 1050 (recommended). It is set at 1024 x 768 (recommended). I can not change the resolution as it is greyed out. But, now having said that, it does fluctuate between the two resolutions. Upon reboot it may come up as one or the other. Also after a period of time and with the computer left on, I get a blank screen and have to force the restart. This happens when I'm on the default resolution of 1680 x 1050. My card is Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS and I have all the updated drivers for this card. For whatever reason my computer is not reading this card (see attached)
My monitor is displayed as a Generic non PnP monitor or is this correct. It is a Samsung S20B300.
My Nvidia card crashes and recovers from time to time.

The screenshot itself reveals a problem.
Can you do a rollback to your previous driver version and see if that cures the problem.

You need to go into Device Manager not Devices and Printers. :)

Duh, I did know that! I uninstalled the driver updates and then installed updated driver from device manager but still the same problem & Windows is blocking Nvidia, see attached.

Another option would be to go here http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us insert your details and click on search, you should be able to use the latest drivers 314.07 from NVidia which should be more updated than the versions you might have.
If your running the 8400GS card then that is Quite old so this must be a windows 8 upgraded system I would think ?, "note" that when installing the new driver to choose custom/ clean install which will remove old drivers first before installing new.

As Craig has already mentioned, this is a fairly old computer trying to run a new OS.
From what I've read in doing the research, you aren't the only one reporting the same problem.
The only answers I've found are to make sure you remove the old driver first, reboot and install the latest version
followed by a shut down and then a restart.

No need to reboot with the newer NVidia Drivers Bob, choosing clean install within the installer will automatically remove the old and install the new without rebooting now, but that might also be different for the OP if her current driver package is very out-dated.
Before the update to Win8 NVidia drivers are supposed to be removed first then the latest Win8 NVidia compatible driver re-installed after updating, this may have been where the OP's system became corrupted ???

When everything works as it's supposed to, reboots aren't needed.

True in many cases Bob, only rebooting is not the problem here as I suspect old incompatible drivers and the new NVidia installer does not give you the option to reboot in-between, it's fully automated and works very well.
Of course you can reboot after the install but it is not necessary now in the new versions.

No it does not work. I did the clean install and it removed the old drivers. Also I noticed that the graphic driver is greyed out when you choose this, not sure if that means anything at all or maybe it is taken care of in the install.
I'll try a few tweaks to this and see if I can get it to work. It is true my system is old so maybe I'll uninstall Windows 8 and go back to Vista.

If there are any of the drivers grayed out there should also be a description like newer or same version already installed or not installed ? try running the installer again and see if you get the same result.

I did as you suggested, only prior to this I had run the installer with the clean install and graphic driver greyed out, see att'd clean install and it did not work. So thinking about what you said I decided to run the installer again but this time I did the option without the clean install, see installing graphics driver (this option requires a restart after installing and upon restarting the resolution is correct!! I have rebooted 3 times just to see if it stays the same and so far so good.

Can you explain the other problem you mentioned regarding the size of the text ???
The icon's you posted where too small to view any details.

That was short-lived :( The resolution comes & goes I guess that's it! Not much I can do at this point, just have to live with it, I suppose.

I resolved that issue, I did find where to make the text bigger and so I removed that from the post! Wish I could resolve the resolution issue, I'll keep working on it. I guess my PC is too old for Windows 8 :'( Oh well, for sure there are worse things out there than this!!

You know when thinking about when this started it was (to the best of my recollection, which doesn't count for much these days, it sucks getting old, lol) after I installed some windows updates. Should I restore my computer to prior to these updates and see if that is, in fact, the cause. Actually updating nvidia card should take care of that issue I would think?
So would this mean getting a new motherboard?
I believe my video card is in my motherboard so would I have to purchase both a motherboard and video card?

Going back to a prior restore point isn't always a good move and brings with it some other possible problems.
avast! for one doesn't like system restore and may need a clean install after a restore.
Wait for someone with more hardware knowledge than I to step in.
I don't know if you can add a separate video card and simply disable the built in one.
Patience is a virtue and I know I'm one of those that possesses very little of that but, please,
be patient. :)

If it is a desktop then fitting a new card is quite easy.. Even I can do that :D
All you need to do is determine the type of card slots available
If you let me know the manufacturer then I should be able to find the data

What essexboy is looking for has to do with the hardware slot availability in your computer.

I should have been more explicit when referring to my nic card. Thanks, that looks easy enough, I think. Back when I had the other problem presumebly with the nic card I was told that I didn't have to go this route I could just buy a universal card (not sure what to call it), and plug it into a usb port on my computer and problem solved. This info came from one of the techies at Future Shop my local computer store. It runs for about $30.00. Does this sound right. Anyway I can take this info with me when I go to the computer store to make sure I get the right part.

Six of one and half a dozen of the other really. With the card it is internal so you never see it, but with a USB it is portable although it does poke out from the computer and I have bent a few in my time :o

I'd choose the internal option.
1. It's usually cheaper.
2. Unless you intend to use it on more than one computer,
why pay extra for something you could loos or damage.

Just to let you know, I took my tower into a shop in my area (she checks things out for free) & lo & behold my motherboard is pretty much fried. So now I'm looking at buying a new PC as my computer is just too old and not worth fixing.

Ya got that right!!
I'm heading out of town in a short while so not buying anything til I get back. In the meantime there are a few things I want to try out, one being creating a VM so since i have nothing to lose I'll play around on my old PC. I'm sure you have a tutorial I can follow to do this essexboy?

Well for my VM I use http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
All you need to is install the player
Then install the Guest operating system

My motherboard finally crashed completely so I had to buy a new computer! I did use it for quite awhile with the screen resolution out of whack, amazing what you can get used to, lol! I also had a problem installing AIS with the firewall (couldn't connect to the web and crashed constantly so had to run AIS without the firewall enabled) on my laptop & old computer and for whatever reason it runs perfectly fine :) on my new computer. Go figure.
I also cannot install a VM on my computer since I don't have a full copy of a windows operating system ( I have Millenium and XP but they are both student copies and of course the OS which is already installed on my computer. I don't suppose there is any way around this?
