Title: Almost ready to give up Avast on window 8
Post by: marc-d-l on February 21, 2013, 01:45:10 AM
For six days now I have been trying to get Avast to work properly on windows 8 (soon to be 7) The only way I can get it to work is to turn it on manualy. Once I have done that, everything is fine until the PC is restarted,I then have to go through the procedures all over again.I have done repairs re installs, the settings are the same as my other pc's .Any of you that have or know windows 8 have any ideas.  I want an AV that I can trust to know its working. The way it is now am never sure if am protected or if it's being updated.

Hi marc-d-l,

Which version of avast?
Can you provide more details about your OS (specs)?
Do you currently use any other antivirus besides avast?
Have you ever installed any other antivirus besides avast?

Hi marc-d-l,

Can you try running their uninstaller in Win7 compatibility mode?

Are you using avast! 7 or avast! 8?

If avast! 8, are you using the latest build? (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=115499.0)

With all the problems your having with avast why don't you give the new avast 8 RC a try, it's working pretty stable imo.

Remember to download and save the new version first and run the removal tool after deleting the old version.

As I mentioned previously your soloution to all of your problems would have been to install the RC2 8.0.1480.

Am back, I really never left.I still used Avast on XP and vista, but my windows 8 was another story,it turns out I had memory problems. They never found out the problem and since it was a new pc they gave me another.Got it home the next day the memory sticks fried  to a crispy lump.Back to the shop for another new PC. So far so good with avast installed and working good.By the way all 3 PC are ASUS.

I don't see any questions, suggestions about your Update settings.
Lets do some digging, What are your avastUI > Settings > Updates > scroll down to and open Proxy Settings ?

If it isn't set to Direct connection (no proxy) set it to that.
There have been problems in the past with obtaining the information from Internet Explorer if set to Auto Detect.
