Title: Very strange problem with Avast install

We're in the very early stages of testing Avast for an enterprise rollout.  I've been installing remotely using the Enterprise Administration Console.  Yesterday I installed a laptop (at the owner's request), and after the install was complete, the user could not browse anything in IE, Firefox or Chrome.  We disabled Avast, and the browsers worked fine.  Enabled it, and they stopped working again.

We have Avast installed on 24 hosts of every size, shape and description.  Windows 7, 8, 2003 Server, 2008 Server, 2012 Server.  This is the *only* host that has displayed this behavior.

We uninstalled and reinstalled twice but the behavior didn't change.  The user is going to format and reinstall the OS, and then we'll test again.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Well first, please know that the client can not be installed on Windows 8 client and Windows 2012 servers at this time and be managed.  These won't be compatible until the next program update which will be later this year. Regarding the client not being able to browse via the internet on the browsers you mentioned, please check to see if the firewall of the client has the file/printer sharing enabled or disabled depending on the OS, and if the ports are open on the client.

The Windows firewall is disabled.  We disabled, individually, the Avast firewall, the Web Shield and the Network shield, with no change in observed behavior.  If we disabled Avast entirely, web browsing functioned normally.

Not sure why this one computer does that, but I'll check later today to see if he reinstalled and if the behavior persists.

Are the clients in a remote environment?  Since the software does not include a firewall for the client, please make sure the file/printer sharing is enabled and if the clients are using Win 7 or visa that that the UAC is disabled. You can also try enabled "Internet connection sharing mode" in Firewall/Expert Settings?

Frequently web connection problems can be traced to a corrupted DNS cache. Flushing this cache is an easy fix to many of these problems. This is how to flush the cache in Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

Here is how to fix that corrupted DNS cache.

1. Click the Microsoft Vista Start logo in the bottom left corner of the screen
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. RIGHT-click on Command Prompt
5. Select Run As Administrator
6. In the command window type the following and then hit enter: ipconfig /flushdns
7. You will see the following confirmation:

If this does not work then try resetting the complete network connections. Open command prompt ( in admin mode for win 7)

C:\>netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

Reboot your system. Remember that at an instance only the wired or wireless could be turned on. Having both of them can cause a conflict most of the times and not recommended.

The tech formatted and reinstalled and Avast is working normally now.  We think it may have been an odd interaction between Avast and Malwarebytes.

I agree I have been installing Avast, Zone Alarm Freeware Firewall, MalwareBytes, Super AntiSpyware and Spyware Blaster which are all free and are great freeware programs especially avast 8.

I'm having the same problem.  I have avast installed on a lab of machines and when students logged in this morning they couldn't get to the internet.  It also happened on Friday.  A restart seems to fix the problem temporarily.  I checked the event log and avast logs and didn't see anything.  Any idea on where to look next?  They are Windows XP.

Maybe I can shed some light here. I've had a similar issue with Malwarebytes in the past. Modern versions use a local proxy by default (it can be disabled in settings). This caused internet access to become so slow on some of my machines that it was functionally unusable. I suspect that this is not an Avast issue.
