Title: Avast! 8 doesn't work on my PC
Post by: Jaunty on March 02, 2013, 12:23:36 PM
Hello,

I just updated my Avast! software to version 8.0.1482 on my computer (Windows Vista 32 bits)
My computer is protected by default windows vista firewall but avast! is registered as allowed program.
Windows Vista is updated.

But now Avast! doesn't work any more.

I tried to repair avast! without success.

I tried an uninstall from safe mode using aswClear - http://files.avast.com/test5beta/aswclear.exe and re-install. Without success.

When I try to activate manually avast! service, it is down 1 minute later.

When I change my settings ("permanent internet connection" for instance), they are not saved.

When I try to update VPS database, popup says : "update failure, Avast! service is not activated".

When I try to "restore default settings" from avast! settings, popup says that "sub-system AAVM detected an RPC error".

Please help !

I have the same issue with a twist. I am running XP with SP3 and currently all updates. I have no issues with Avast 7 Antivirus Pro .. in fact it worked perfectly. I received the update with the Avast control panel, as I have automatic updates switched to manual, and proceeded to update. This is where it all went bad.

First it would NOT activate "Shields". I thought it was a bad download and install, so I uninstalled version 7 and used "aswclear.exe" (old version) in "Safe Mode" to make sure everything was uninstalled. I tried downloading the "Trial" version of Avast 8 Antivirus Pro and then I was going to update all info accordingly. It stated that I was pass my 30 day limit and would NOT proceed further. I just installed it ... how can I be passed a 30 day trial period?

I got on the forums here and read a post that stated there was a new "aswclear.exe" with Version 8 in the drop-down list so I downloaded it. Proceeded with with the uninstall process, rebooted, etc.. I again downloaded "Avast 8 Antivirus Pro Trial" and reinstalled. Same issues as above but I also got a BSOD stating I installed new hardware and to contact the manufacturer ... I didn't install any hardware, just "Avast 8 Antivirus Pro Trial".

What is the issue? What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

I have same problem with windows 7 32bit, once upgraded, it just keep shows "Avast! service is not activated" and there is no way to uninstall. Finally I uninstall it under windows' safe mode, and go back to use Avast! 7. Anyone know how to solve this problem, please kindly help. Thanks.

When you ran aswclear, did you also run it for version 7 and any earlier versions?  If not, do so, restart windows, and then install the version you want.  There might be some remnants of earlier versions around.

When you ran aswclear, did you also run it for version 7 and any earlier versions?  If not, do so, restart windows, and then install the version you want.  There might be some remnants of earlier versions around.

The second time I uninstalled Avast, with the new "aswclear.exe", I ran it for both Versions (7 & 8 as it had the drop down for both version). The first uninstall, using the new "aswclear.exe" deleted version 8 and aswclear.exe from my desktop ... I downloaded the aswclear.exe again and ran it for version 7 for which it found nothing. So the answer is "Yes" I did that. I downloaded the "Trail" version again and the same results as my above post.

I wasted 4 hours of pure frustration trying to get version 8 to work. Actually I also had to use "System Restore" to get my system to even boot up properly the second time I installed Avast 8. Total Avast 8 install tries were 3 times. I have no idea what to do  :'(  As I mentioned before I am on Windows XP SP3 32bit with all updates.

I am back on version 7 as it seems to run properly.

UPDATE
AFTER 5 HOURS, I FIXED MY AVAST 8, GO DOWN TO MY NEXT POST FOR HOW.

Original post;
I have exact problem as "SectorGZ". I'm on XP-Sp3 also.
I removed Avast 7 before loading Version 8. (used  "aswclear.exe" on the first installation try.
Still no shields, system freeze, RPC error. Same as "SectorGZ".
Again I removed all signs of version 8 and version 7 using REVO to find all to  uninstall.
Installed "version 8 free" and again no shields, system freeze, RPC error. Same as "SectorGZ"
My computer is up to date, cleaned and free of all malware using many tools to verify clean.
Please help us. I believe in AVAST and never want to use anything else.

I've been using Avast more than 5 years. Never had a problem. I have a desktop running XP and a Laptop running Vista. Never a single problem. Until this week.

I don't know when the desktop version installed itself but it did and seems to be doing find. However, the Vista computer I'm ready to go back to some other protection.

I tried to install Version 8 last night. Totally knocked out my Google browser and the computer went back to a the last restore point. Why? Because at reboot it hung up... forever. I tried to install the update three times. Couldn't do it.

I had some problems with a root kit issue I'd had to have repaired a few weeks back and since I still felt the system was glitcy, I did a restore.

Guess what? Avast 8 won't install on a clean system. Totally knocked out Google Chrome and reset to  last restore point.

I don't want to keep having this issue. Any ideas? Can I get 7 back until you can work out what is obviously a problem that more people than I am having?

Try a "clean" install from safe mode using  aswClear - http://files.avast.com/test5beta/aswclear.exe  :)

Use the utility for each and every version you have ever had.  :)

This didn't work for me, see above posts ... any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea if "aswclear.exe" worked or not, but the proof is Avast 8 will not run properly and causes many system failures. This is everything from BSOD and Memory Conflicts, forcing us to use a "Restore Point" to get the system to boot again, to Avast 8 not functioning at all.

I love Avast, but this version 8 seems terrible. To stay current with all the threats out on the net do we need to resort to another AV? I am NOT criticizing Avast ... just trying to seek a solution.

Yes, I have an ATI 9550 Graphics Card .... I never had an issue until I tried to install Avast 8. I run Autodesk Maya, Photoshop and many more graphic intensive programs without any issue and, as you mentioned, Avast 7 Antivirus Pro works flawlessly.

UPDATE,  I FIXED MY AVAST 8 PROBLEM, SEE HOW FURTHER DOWN ON MY NEXT POST BELOW.

andyGEE33----I do in fact use  AMD graphics/display. I have a video graphics card and use ATI/AMD drivers and software.
Pretty common, what made you think that is a lead?
I think I have some malware deeply hidden where the usual malware killer rootkits can't find it.  Just had a little instability this week, but I've cleaned and looked everywhere and don't have a sign.
ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO GET AVAST 7?    I didn't find an archive on the AVAST site.

It seems from this post: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=116480.0 that ZoneAlarm might be a contributing factor to this issue. Is anyone posting here using ZoneAlarm also? I do.

Go to Start Menu and type services. Click on Services with the little cogs next to it and find Avast! Antivirus and Avast! Firewall. Double click on each one and manually restart them. Make sure they are set to automatic start.

That may work.

Do any of you run Mactype?

I had very similar problems after I restarted after installation (all shields down and unable to start, freezing when clicking resolve issues in main screen, AAVM detected an RPC error, settings not saving, update failure, avast service stopping even after manual start, unable to uninstall unless in safe mode) but once I removed Mactype the issues were resolved.

AFTER 5 HOURS, I FIXED MY AVAST 8, it works great. Here's what I did.

After 5 hours of cleaning, removing programs and many re-installs, I found that
"Microsoft Security Essentials" had been trying to install their virus protection since my Avast was no longer working. It actually succeeded once is the reason I found out what was going on. I disabled the program.
I had just uninstalled IOBIT Advanced System Care (the whole malware, protection and cleaning sub-programs), then I tried an Avast 8 install, which went perfect, works perfect and after 8 hrs. of use, it's still PERFECT.

CONCLUSION; for my XP-sp3 computer, It was either -"IOBIT Advanced System Care"-  or "Microsoft Security Essentials" or the way the were installed that was causing the conflict and my problems with AVAST 8.
All three companies and their products are excellent and no blame on any. Maybe my installations were flawed. JUST HAPPY TO HAVE AVAST WORKING.

I'm glad you got things resolved.

I have checked my XP Box and I don't have "Microsoft Security Essentials" and never did. I wonder how that got installed on your system? To my knowledge Microsoft doesn't force "Microsoft Security Essentials" installs on XP. I have only ZoneAlarm and now Avast 7 re-installed. I, personally, think it is a conflict with ZoneAlarm that my Avast 8 issues are stemming from, but I have no way of checking unless I uninstall ZoneAlarm and try to install Avast 8 again. At least for the moment I have both running in harmony (Avast 7 and ZoneAlarm).

Thanks  ;)

I ran across a recent post i.e. Avast 8, while solving my prob. 3 people had a problem with Zone Alarm and A-8. One post couldn't decide whether it was Z.A. or MS Sec. Essentials.

I'm a newbie to the forum so I hope I'm doing the right thing in the right place.

It's now 3 hours since I agreed to update to Avast 8 and I'm just downloading Avast 7 from OldApps in the hope that it will work.

Since Avast 8 was installed every time I boot the computer I get the well known Assertion Failed message from MS Visual C++ Runtime Library. I've never seen this before in 25 years of using computers.

I'm running 4 computers all with WinXP SP3 all with Avast free, SuperAntiSpayware Pro and PCTools Firewall+ and haven't had a minutes problem until now. Thank goodness I've only installed Avast 8 on one of them. I've now got Avast 7 and will report back as to whether it works or not.

Godam this site software is retarded. It eats my posts.

I can't be bothered typing out what is wrong again. The easy fix is remove avast 8 crippleware and use something else that works. Thanks

This is not a coincidence. I too had all kinds of problems with avast 8. After reading this, I disabled Mactype and reinstalled avast 8. It works fine now!

The problems continue.

Contrary to what I said in my first post, on this computer I'm using Privatefirewall 7.0 not PCTools Firewall + so I uninstalled it.
I then used aswclear .exe in safe mode to get rid of Avast 7, rebooted and re-installed Avast 8. On rebooting it immediately threw up the Assertion Failed message from MS Visual C++ Runtime Library.

I've back tracked again and am now running Avast 7, Privatefirewall 7.0, Superantispyware Pro and Spyware Blaster. All work well. It looks like sorting out Avast 8 is going to be a long job.

Like a number of others here, I too, have been unable to get Avast 8 working on my Windows XP Pro system.

I don't have ZoneAlarm or other firewall installed; I am using the default MS Windows firewall.
I have used ZoneAlarm since version 4.2, and prefer not to switch to a different product, as I have always had outstanding success with this.
My system has an Nvidia graphics interface, not ATI, but since its a laptop with this built in, its not going to change.
I don't have Microsoft Security Essentials or other software installed, other than the MS Windows firewall.  Are there any settings on this firewall that might be an issue?
I initially got Version 8 by accepting the popup offer.  I have also uninstalled it, reinstalled it, including using aswclear, to remove all Avast directories under Program Files.

I can install it and have it working, but the very next time that I reboot, it goes back to tellling me that all shields are disabled.  Allthough I have tried a number of things mentioned in this forum, I remain unable to get Version 8 working.  It appears that my best bet would be to uninstall, and go back to version 7, which was working perfectly before the update, and wait, hoping that a future update of version 8 will resolve this problem.

I need to tell others to whom I have recommended Avast!, and are using Avast 7 under XP NOT to accept the update offer until this issue is resolved.

Congratulations, Avast. You have succeeded in taking something that was free and worked and turned it into a nasty piece of bloatware. Why ?

XP Pro SP3 system with AMD graphics. Avast 8 service crashes on update install reboot and freezes machine. Can't be ars*d to play with clean installs etc. - life is too short and there are plenty of other alternatives. Thank god for backups !

Just bought Avast internet security, 5pc's for 3 years, installed on all 5, all running Win7 64bit, 2 pro, 3 home. On the last one caused crashing and BSOD. Finally reinstalled Win 7 after trying many of the suggestions on here, as nothing of real importance on the PC. With fresh install, as soon as I install Avast 8 it does the same thing, will either not let me log in or just locks up right after logging in. Nothing except Windows installed and updated and drivers, Safe Mode, uninstall Avast 8, reinstall avast 7 and all is ok until I install my license then it auto updates to 8 and crashes, as long as I just use the free and don't register it all is ok. How long of my 3 years of the license I just purchased do you think it will take to come out with the fix? I have read through all of the forums and tried quite a few suggestions to no avail. Only an issue on one PC and this one has me stumped. Too many hours, it kinda works now and I am tired of messing with it. Hope a fix is found soon ....

We have purchased a license for a number of computers. It's worked everywhere in the office. Now, wanted to install Avast! Pro Antivirus on another computer - and there's a huge issue.

The computer is running on XP SP3. No other antivirus installed, no Microsoft Security Essentials etc.

What's happening?

Avast Pro Antivirus install goes smoothly. The problem occurs when the process is done and I want to provide the license file of our subscription. It recognizes the license is valid till 2014 but then a famous "AAVM detected an RPC error" is shown. As a result Avast simply doesn't work.

But that's not everything. After rebooting there's another issue. After very first pressing of any key on the keyboard - both keyboard and touch pad freeze. The only possible way to uninstall Avast! (or do anything else) is to use touch pad only without pressing any key on keyboard while Windows is running. I found that Avast (after restarting Windows) somehow gets into keyboard drivers and... And I don't know what. I'm not a technician, I'm a customer and I just want the product to work.

I tried uninstalling Avast with the uninstall utility. Reinstalling didn't show any difference.

What else can be done?

I got same problem ad you all. To begin with downloading and installing Avast 8 was painfully slow and that was just the start of my problems. When i finally got it installed, it started to hog my CPU memory, slowed down my pc down badly and not to mention that it completely freezes my PC especially when i try to register Avast.

By the way, i don't have corrupt files, no other antivirus software, no firewall yet, and no other programs running that were mentioned on here that seem to cause problems.

My third PC still have version 7 and that is working fine but the other to PC's are not. On one PC i have windows XP and on the other one i have windows 7.

I hope they get a fix on this soon or i will have to go back to AVG.

I run windows vista. I have Avast!Pro. When the popup prompted me to download the new version 8, I did and the computer locked up on reboot. I had to start the computer with the boot disk and then ran system restore. The older version of Avast! would not activate. I run into endless loops when I try to restart Avast! Not computer savvy. Very angry and frustrated. The good folks at Avast! should never have released version 8 until all the bugs were straightened out. :-[

Update: I first ran CCleaner64 to clean up the mess in my registry. Then I noticed that Microsoft wanted to install an update and so I let it. I then ran the Avast! clean uninstall ap in safe mode. I then double clicked on the Avast! Pro install short cut on my desktop and the dialog box that opened said that my Avast! version needed updating and so I let it using my existing license. But lo and behold after the successful download and installation, it turns out that I re-installed version 7 not 8.  Works fine now.
