Title: Can't get rid of Chitka pop ups
Post by: Solivita on March 14, 2013, 07:42:28 PM
I need your help:

Chitka pop ups are on the right hand side and another pop up (sometimes porn) on the left side.  Sometimes I am redirected to other sites as well. I have tried all kinds of malware and virus removal software. I've paid someone to come to get rid of it and it's still here!

I've been reading other solutions but probably there's different solutions for different operating systems.

Windows 7 64-bit computer.

Attached is the log...

I received an error this time as well as last time, "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive /Device/Harddisk4/DR4"
What does this error mean?

Also, I don't see Avast listed in the programs under Contro Panel.  The computer person I had here to fix this problem tried to download it but ended up loading AVG instead.  Is there another place I need to look to remove the second antivirus software?

Attached is the log file from Rogue Killer.

So far there haven't been any pop ups.  I will give it a few days to make sure it's gone!

Do you know how this got on my computer and why it wasn't found by all the programs I used?

What program would you recommend I use on a regular basis to find and delete malware?

Chitika

Chitika may bundle with third parties, including browser attachments, who pose a threat to an infected computer system. Please note, though Chitika standalone is not essentially dangerous, the third-party software Chitika may associate with or bundle with are potentially dangerous

This malware places itself in the one area that no anti-malware/Anti-virus checks... The Host file

All I did was to replace the Host file with a standard one

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change thatClear Restore Points

Go Start > All Programmes > Accessories > System tools
Right click Disc Cleanup and select run as administrator
Select More Options tab
Press Sytem Restore and Shadow Copies Cleanup button

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article (http://www.forbes.com/sites/eliseackerman/2013/01/11/us-department-of-homeland-security-calls-on-computer-users-to-disable-java/) and this article (http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/technolog/us-warns-java-software-security-concerns-escalate-1B7938755).
I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser (http://www.geekstogo.com/2600/how-to-disable-java-in-your-web-browser/) and How to unplug Java from the browser (http://krebsonsecurity.com/how-to-unplug-java-from-the-browser/))

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

(http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7729/mbamicontw5.gif) Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php).

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker (http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/) and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport  (http://www.trusteer.com/Products/Trusteer-Rapport-for-Online-Banking)

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ? I did everything, but the clean up on system restore deleted all restore points except today after I downloaded Trustee Rapport.  The other restore points are System Image Restore Point.  Should it have deleted all the others?

Nope that is good, the malware should be history now even if you decide to do a system restore
