Last streaming update here was at 10:29 AM EST in USA and it is now 10:33 PM EST. Most of the time Avast says "Connection not established".

Same here. Also on my brother's PC.He still has Avast version 7.

Same here, "Connection not established". version 8.

Insofar as avast! controls the servers and the streaming updates, no user control or direct input is available for this issue.
Streaming updates are for definition updates that cannot wait for the two or three daily main updates and/or are fixes applied for definition update errors or a tweaking in the main update made just prior. Different parts of the world have these streaming updates applied at differing times as threats arise, so what one might see in USA, these updates might not show up until a couple hours later elsewhere. Reason is due to deployment timing and any issues with the avast! server network that comes up.
So, for the above reasons, streaming update connectivity will come and go. Not much one can do about it.
In the worst case scenario, there is that emergency update feature, so if that works as it should, your expected protection should be always be available.
As long as one has the latest definitions, avast! can provide the protection needed, and coupled with safe surfing practices, one should be safe out there.

OK, everything working for me ;D

It's 2:27am here in Alaska and all is well. :)

Streaming servers are online now. Solid "Connection established" now. 8)

Sometimes connected, most times not. At least I am not the only sufferer. However, it does put into question whether or not streaming updates are happening. From what I can see, I guess mostly not so assume that we are not receiving reliable or timely virus database updates.
This is not good, especially as the UI contains the following message about the importance of being up to date.
"It is vital to always keep your security software up-to-date."
I though that this was the reason for having the facility of streaming updates. :(

Do I understand you to mean this will update the map, dat, etc. files in the defs folder given the absence of a stream folder (no bin files) in 20-30 hours?
Even though the scheduler had run the task during this latest down period, the defs were not updated.
I see where the task is configure to allow run on demand. I might give that shot the next time an extended "connection not established" scenario rears up.
Thank you.

hi dallas,
Here is a posted thread about avast! Emergency Update from last June and what it is: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100291.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100291.0) You may wish to take the time to read the entire thread and you may find the answers you seek there.
The quoted section really would apply if some part of avast! was broken; it could save an user the need to repair or do a clean install automatically. Note the several posts by DavidR, and also igor (avast! team member), you will find more complete and more understandable answers within that thread posted by him and others.
Before avast! version 7, there was no streaming update feature; one had to wait for the next general definition update to get protection for new malware detections. Emergency Updater is a different animal but relates to the streaming update issue in that if that was broken, or the main definiton update feature was broken, Emergency Updater would step in and fix that for you.

Thanks. I did scan through that thread but it's all about v7 and the streaming updates (which is what this thread is about) is new in v8.
But I do understand now that the emergency updater doesn't update updates.

Streaming updates are not new to Avast 8.

I stand corrected. I must have picked up that misinformation from a review.

No problem. You can always check a specific version at http://www.avast.com/release-history (http://www.avast.com/release-history). Streaming updates was added with the Avast 7.
