I am using avast 8 free and I would like to ask you how software updater is supposed to work. The box "Download new updates if possible" in settings is checked (by default). Does it check automatically for updates and let me know when there are ones? Or do I have to open the GUI of avast every now and then and check by myself?
Thanks!

Hi, to my understanding it just downloads the new software updates if available, but you have to manually install them.

Thanks for your answer. But how can I know that an update is available to install? Does avast pop-up or must I open the GUI and check the software updater?
-
you're welcome. and yes you have to open it and check :) but in the premier version there is an autoupdater

Thanks! I think I can manage to open the GUI at the end of the day ;D

Not 100% sure how the free version of avast! works, but I am using the Internet Security package and I do get a "pop-up" notification that updates are available from the Software Updater. I sill have to click the "install" button but the blue notification pop-up does appear.

Oh yeah I remember seeing a pop-up.. It should be there on the free version as well then..

The free version still gives you the pop-up to install now or remind later. Personally I never like to do this 'install now' from the notice, I prefer to do it from the GUI. This is mainly because in some cases you may wish to close the program that it is going to update, for instance, the Flash Player updates, the browser/s that they apply generally have to be closed before you can update them.

This is very convenient! Thank you all for your help :)
