Title: Avast 8.0 and Thunderbird 17 with Gmail
Post by: bazsihuhu on March 17, 2013, 04:14:47 PM
Hi everybody,

I am using Gmail with IMAP.
I can not send and receive e-mails when I turn on in Avast 8 the "SSL Accounts check", it works fine when I turn it off. It worked in Avast 7 as well.
I had Thunderbird and Avast 8 reinstalled and my e-mail account reconfigured too. Result is negative.
How can I configure my Avast 8?

my system:
Win XP SP3
Avast free 8.0.1484
Comodo 6.0.264710.2708
Thunderbird 17.0.4

imap.gmail.com - SSL/TLS - 993
smtp.gmail.com - STARTTLS - 587

Please help me.
Thanks in advance.

Glad to hear things worked out for you. I use Thunderbird with 3 accounts: Windows Live, Gmail and Yahoo and no problems here at all. ;) 8)

Does anyone have a good idea for this problem?

I can only get it to work if I turn SSL checking off.

Furthermore I appear to have the correct certificates installed but get this message when I start Thunderbird

This is beating me at the moment - where can I download Avast 7?

Does anyone have a good idea for this problem?

Please enable debug logging in avast Settings/Maintenance, simulate the problem and then send me the log file C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\Mail.log by mail.

I have the same problem, but it only started a week ago.
POP3 works OK for incoming mail, but not outgoing mail.
IMAP doesn't work at all.
I've tried exporting, deleting and importing the Avast certificate etc.
That didn't work.
Disabling SSL didn't work either.
I've disabled scanning outgoing mail, so I can at least use my POP3 accounts as normal.

The only way that everything works fine is when I disable the Mail shield. But that's inconvenient, to say the least.

Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.
Latest Thunderbird, Avast 8.0.1483.
Latest Comodo firewall.

I've enabled debug logging. If you want the log I can send it to you.

Hello,

you can download the fixed Mail Shield here:
http://public.avast.com/~peterka/8.0.1483/ashMaiSv.dll

1) Disable the self-defense in avast! settings/Troubleshooting and stop the Mail Shield
2) Put the new ashMaiSv.dll to the program folder (C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast)
3) Enable the self-defense and start the Mail Shield

Alas the fixed dll didn't work.
Problems still the same.

Alas the fixed dll didn't work.
Problems still the same.
Go back into Troubleshooting,  and select the option to reset factory defaults.  Then reboot when prompted.

That might--might--do it.

(I'm hoping).

It's all working now!!

This is what I did:

1 Restore to factory settings
2 Disabled the self-defense
3 Disabled the Mail shield
4 Copied the fixed Mail shield to the Avast program folder
5 Enabled the self-defense
6 Enabled the Mail shield
7 Followed the procedure to replace the Avast certificate in TB (explained elsewhere)
8 Enabled the SSL/TLS on the Gmail accounts in TB (I still had that disabled and that didn't work!)

I'm not quite sure if all the steps are really necessary, but this is how it worked for me.

Thanks for the quick replies!!

I'm having a similar problem, but not with sending gmail, but receiving. Getting a popup asking me to confirm a security exception.

I was trying to follow the instructions here, but get an error when copying the new ashMaiSv.dll  file to the Program Files/AVAST Software/ Avast folder.

When moving the file, I first get a popup saying I first need Administrator permission to copy the file to that folder. I click Continue (because my account is an Administrator) and then I get another popup saying: Destination Folder Access Denied.  You need permission to perform this action

Am I doing something wrong?  When I log into my PC, I log in with a user account I created, but Windows says I am in the Administrator group.

Using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  Thunderbird 17.0.5    Avast  8.0.1483

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi,
I had a similar problem with Gmail/Thunderbird after AVAST8 was installed on my Windows 8 computer. Thunderbird would no longer download or send mail on my two Gmail accounts. I deleted the accounts from Thunderbird and tried to add them back. When I tried to add them Thunderbird gave a message “Configuration could not be verified – is the username/password wrong?” It wasn’t, because on my Android tablet I was able to send and receive on these accounts with the same username/password. This is what I tried:
1.   I uninstalled and re-installed Thunderbird- same problem.
2.   Using the guest account on my Windows computer, I opened Thunderbird and tried to add the same GMAIL account. This time I received a message to confirm a “security certificate exception”. When I examined the details of this I saw that certificate was associated with AVAST. After confirming the exception, I was able to send and receive mail in the Guest account.
3.   I then found this thread and followed the various suggestions. I confirmed that when I disabled SSL checking in AVAST I could add the GMAIL account in Thunderbird and send and receive mail. But if I enabled it, I could not send or receive. I followed the procedure described in http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB91#artTitle
This did not fix the problem.
4.   I concluded that it must be something in my TB Profile that was preventing Thunderbird from generating the “Confirm Security Certificate exception” dialogue. In my profile folder there was a file called cert8.db. With Thunderbird closed I deleted this file then re-opened Thunderbird. This time I was prompted with the “security certificate exception” dialogue box. I confirmed the exception and then was asked to enter my GMAIL username and password. My Gmail accounts now work fine.
So, in my case the solution was to delete the following file:
C:\Users\YourWindowsUsername\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\YourProfile.default\cert8.db
Hope this may help others who have this problem.
