Title: Google Images Virus?
Post by: cheesehead9099 on March 19, 2013, 09:53:49 PM
Hey, I just got my mac a few days ago and installed Avast, and this happened to me a couple of days ago.

I was just browsing google images (had searched "blue background" for a graphics design project I was doing), and suddenly avast said it found an infected file located in the Google cache, called VBS:Bicololo-CR [Trj].

The full path:
/Users/(myuser,don't want to show my name)/Library/Caches/Google/Chrome/Default/Cache/f_000bd2

I deleted it, but I'm worried now - I switched to Mac to avoid viruses; is it really this easy for my Mac to get infected? Is it possible that this was a false positive? I didn't even click a link or a picture, I was just looking at the backgrounds. I did not visit any other website.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Also, I saw that if I click About avast in the program, it shows this:

The program uses the following components:
   •   bsdiff & bspatch, © 2003-2005 Colin Percival
   •   Google Protocol Buffers, © 2012 Google Inc.
   •   libcurl, © 1996-2011 Daniel Stenberg

Is this normal?

You got an Anti-Virus and it detected and blocked a virus, what did you expect?

Now. the question is, if you weren't using an anti-virus what would have happened?
And the answer is, nothing, because that virus (VBS) is a Virtual Basic Script, it only runs on Windows. And yes, avast obviously detects viruses that would only affect Windows also.

With that said, is Mac vulnerable to viruses? Yes, in theory all systems are vulnerable. If you got a Mac to avoid viruses it would have been safer to get an abacus.

Finally, what's 'unnormal' about this?
"The program uses the following components:

   •   Google Protocol Buffers, © 2012 Google Inc.
   •   libcurl, © 1996-2011 Daniel Stenberg"

It says that avast! uses libraries that are copyrighted to those developers, and credits them, what's unnormal about that?
Are you implying that you are afraid you are infected and that the virus entered that information there? The question is, why would it do that? It would be pointless, and would be revealing itself. Still, I don't see why you even think that's unnormal, it makes you sound paranoid.

I'm going to be honest here. I am paranoid. I've been screwed by viruses on Windows for a long time now, and so moving over to Mac I just want to ensure peace of mind. What I'm asking is if it's really that easy to get a virus...just by googling some images (not even clicking on the images themselves). Thanks for your help
