Title: Streaming Updates
Post by: mistercee on March 30, 2013, 08:16:56 PM
Connection established...connection not established.....connection established.....connection not established.....and so it goes in the world of Avast. Must be the Easter Bunny nibbling on their servers!

Try a repair. Control Panel>Uninstall>double click "avast">click "repair">reboot  :)

Mine shows enabled but no connection established.  Did a repair, rebooted but didn't change anything.

Just reset to default settings so now showing connection established.

Well it's certainly a cloudless sky tonight over Manchester.  At least I'm not the only one to be cast adrift by Avast!

Try a repair. Control Panel>Uninstall>double click "avast">click "repair">reboot  :)

A really don't think a repair is going to help with this condition, the connection being established or otherwise is unlikely to change as a result of a repair. If it did it is more a coincidence than by design.

I tend not to get overly excited about monitoring if the connection is established or not, nothing I can do about that. Currently it shows connection not established, yet I have had 43 streaming updates today and that is much more relevant. That said I rarely even check up on that either.

Somewhere in 22:00 (MSK) Avast stopped getting streaming updates.
Streaming updates enabled and not connected. At first thought it was for me with some settings, but it turned out that I was not the only one. I have in my exactly the situation like mistercee.
Apparently, the problem with the server Avast happened.

As a user of Free I can't complain especially considering the Streaming Updates is but one aspect of Avast's effective protection.

Nor is it much of a concern to me within my strong layering schema.

However, they do tout it highly and were I a paying customer I would venture to say I'd like a Web site to check on the status.  Norton has a nice example for its Connect Safe service:
http://status.nortondns.com/
(Disclaimer: if there is such a site, I'm too dense to find it.)

After observing today's on-again off-again connectivity and not having received any updates in over six hours it would be nice to check on the service.  Down for maintenance.  Server overload.  Contract employee stumbled and knocked over a patch panel...

Otherwise, there's always this forum where I can poke about and see I'm Not The Only One.  ;)

Seems you can kick the thing into life by going to Cloud Services settings and disabling then enabling streaming updates.  It dies again very soon after and nothing useful seems to have happened.

Also as DavidR said, not much one can do about it, as this is an external connection issue and not a resident fault on your system.

It's the servers.  Not surprised, as Avast! is and will always be a prime target for black hats.

Just updated to version 8 via clean install, and last streaming update noted was 3/30/2013 (using the month/date/year convention used by avast! here) @ 7:33:42 AM when I still had version 7 running, so...  wait it out and it will be fixed.  Connected, not connected, connected, not...etc., until fixed.  This is only a symptom, not an error in your avast! installation.

Last streaming Update was at 12:25PM on 03/30. That was 17 hours ago. Florida, USA. Those Easter bunnies have been very busy inside Avast's servers.

One of the many possibilities for server failure.

Even when the connection is established, streaming updates still do not come. Last update received 30/03/2013 at 17:44:33 (UTC). However database updates come regularly (130330-1 03/30/2013 at 21:04:27 (UTC)). Should contact support.

It is now going on 24 hours since the last streaming update. My question is would you feel secure doing online banking or online shopping or doing your tax return online?

Yes,it is 24 hours without Streaming Updates and I am not feeling so secure online.
If you ask me,I think Streaming Updates are the best Avast feature.

The streaming updates are over and above the regular virus definitions updates. When a new virus definitions update is available it also contains the previous streaming updates. So you aren't missing out if the streaming updates experience any issues, you just get them with the regular virus definition updates, just not as quickly.

I would not worry that much. if you have not noticed it yet, but streamming updates, go missing most of the time Avast! releases an upgrade. In this case it would be BETA 1484.
Title: Re: Streaming Updates

Same boat - not a single stream update for last 24 hours. But I still feel secure as I have latest VPS
Title: Re: Streaming Updates
Post by: Kaskad on March 31, 2013, 06:49:01 PM
The fact that the VPS updates come 1-2 times a day.
It certainly is not critical, but still ... it is a problem.

I can confirm also, no streaming update since: 3/30/2013  9:17:31AM

I'm not sure it's that simple. If Cloud connection is down, then so is FileRep, meaning there won't be any FileRepMalware detections, there won't be any reputation warnings. That seems like a bigger issue than it appears at first...

Indeed.  It sure would be nice to have Avast chime in on this.
There's this forum.  Their blog.  Facebook.  Google+.  And their Web site.  So many ways to update their users and... Nada.
Their last Tweet: "Are you an iPad fan?"  Really.

If client is NOT connected to the cloud, does it even matter which server handles what if you're not connected in the first place?
It's like worrying if an unplugged TV will consume power from a hydro power plant or from a nuclear power plant. It's irrelevant since it's not even plugged into the power grid... same here...
Title: Re: Streaming Updates
Post by: DavidR on March 31, 2013, 10:44:02 PM
That is the thing, there is no differentiation for the FileRep and streaming updates.web

The only thing we can look at relates to the Streaming updates: nothing about the other cloud related services.
Title: Re: Streaming Updates
Post by: RejZoR on April 01, 2013, 06:47:26 AM
Actually you can.

Security tab, Cloud Intelligence part of the screen. You have Reputation Services there and if you're not connected to the cloud i'd say it's not even working.

I'm also surprised that no one has managed to comment this issue from avast! team. Holidays or not, this is quite severe issue imo.

Spywar - Good question.  Connection established, cloud animation is running, but the last update was a couple days ago.  (Note - this PC is only occasionally turned on, so if there's a delay between "connection established" and actually getting an update, I could be sitting in that delay window and not have received an update yet - no way for me to know.  I *did* receive a regular (not streaming) update about an hour ago.)

Hope this helps.

Ok thanks, btw I got some streaming updates now :) connection is still unstable though

Colleague restarted all streaming servers at 12:00 (GTM+2). Servers are under high load now, output throughput is tree times higher than usual and there is too many reconnections. All update packages from outage time have to be delivered. I hope that situation will be normal in some hours.

I'm sorry for this incident. We found possible source of these problems in server application, fix will be applied during next week. Still, we have to check automatic monitoring system tomorrow...

Connection has stabilized as far as I can tell.  Received the 1st April VPS and the previous three got purged.  But no Streaming folder yet.

What a fiasco.

Explains what was going on, if the cloud operation appeared to be normal to avast! team, then they were not aware of a problem.  Thanks to spywar, things started to roll along.  Since all streaming updates are rolled into the next vps update, really was not worried.

But as RejZoR pointed out, File Reputation may well be linked to streaming update, and if that has no connection, then FR does not either.  As I have the free version, FR not really relevant as I cannot run the avast! sandbox, so FR possibly not running to the cloud to check files as I run them, really is of no value.

It may be that it was running all along, and establishing connections when it needed to, but that feature is not really available in the free version.  I doubt anyone was monitoring this behavior whilst all this was going on.

We (I) got along just fine before version 7, and so as long as the main vps's come in, I really do not worry.

I am assuming that this means we are not connected to the cloud at all, its not just the streaming updates but all cloud services?
