Title: Help !!!!! all avast on every computer has stopped ?????
Post by: audioaudio on April 10, 2013, 06:01:44 PM
Hi,

I am an Avast user of many years (when it was the old icon and old fashioned interface), and always liked using it.

Today however, I turned my computers on this morning and everything was o.k. but I then went out and when I came back, they had a red X through the icon saying avast was unsecured. I opened the interface up and clicked on the "fix now" button but it will not work.
I looked at the virus definitions in the update section and it says "unknown".

At first I thought I must have virus, but it is on both computers that were on but doing nothing. I then started a laptop that has been used but not for about a week, and after boot up avast was working for a few minutes but then changed to the red X

I then tried another laptop that has not been used in about a year with the same result.

I am using version 6.0.1367 and using windows xp SP3

Please don't ask me to upgrade to the newest "cloud" version, as I do not want this at all and am very happy using the version I have.

As it has happened on 4 computers then I must assume that something on the Avast servers has done this.

Please, please help me with this as soon as you can. My computer is my work.

Thank you.

The newest version isn't a "cloud" version.
The streaming update features uses the cloud to provided you with streaming updates.
An asset in always having the latest protection as soon as it's available provided you're on-line.

Red cross on the Avast icon and "program stopped or instable". I tried to restart, update, Reset/Restore (?, Rétablir in French), nothing works.

We are using Avast free, XP Pro SP3.

Suggestion anyone?? This is also my work, please any help welcome......

Thanks.

You might not want to hear this but, to get the latest protection upgrade to v8.0.1483.
Just select the "custom" install. It's always best to have the latest up-to-date security software.  :)

@ shamon What version of avast are you using? By this I mean, v6.0 v7.0, v8.0?

I understand what you are saying, but I like it fine the way it is, and shouldn't have stopped working because of the version.

There are many who like particular versions of various software, and Avast is no exception.

I need to know why it stopped working.

Any help appreciated please.

I've got same problem this is urgent situation, avast not warned about this and now computers are insecure.
After todays definitions update all shields have automatically turned off and I'm unable to turn them on by pressing from menu "Enable All Shields".
This happened on 3 of my computers so it's not some standalone case but the problem caused by your todays definitions. Also the red cross is visible on the avast windows bar menu.
I've got Avast 6 and I don't want to update to newer program version 8.  I'm good with 6 and I don't like the features of 8. I hope this is not an intended action to force users to install newer software because that would be just not right and you've not warned about it otherwise I would switch updates off today.
How do I fix this issue. This is urgent situation and I'm waiting for some answers.

I am also having this problem on a PC running 6.0.1367.
Don't tell me to upgrade; it's not an option. My employers VPN will not recognize any version of Avast past 6. I've tried.
My options are to either get version 6 up and running again or switch to another AV for this PC. I run version 8 pro on my other PCs, this is the only one having a problem.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have any recent unpXXXXXX files (where X are some numbers) in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast\log (I hope I remember the path correctly...)?

On the side note, since last 3 months Avast has significant amount of issues including many false positive. What is this? If this will occur more and more I will be forced to replace Avast with other software even though I've been using Avast for many years on Windows OS based computers. I'm thinking about clamav combined with ad-aware or some other anti-malware... what do you think about it? Or is there any other better protection either free or paid? Just no Symantec Norton Antivirus I've never liked this resource hog. I would like also something very customizable to make exclusions, type of scans, something that has at least as many features as Avast.

[/quote]

I am using v7.0.

I usually always allow automatic updates when it comes to anti-virus. I don't mind having the lastest version (unless I am being told why I shouldn't ??) but I also hope it is not an action from Avast to "force" the update. I have always been with Avast, I would be really disappointed :-(

So Para-Noid, you say I should follow this below? I will go for it if it's guaranteed to solve my problem and not create extra confusion by reinstall (yes, I am scared).

Yes, 3 of them with today date (2013-04-10) named: unp31232441.tmp.mdmp , unp51579855.tmp.mdmp unp174442858.tmp.mdmp and.... 1 older (2013-03-27) unp113549710.tmp.mdmp.

they must be having HUGE headaches by what they DID!, I imagine its support management receiving hundreds of requests.... because now this is not an Easy or Automatic-remotely fixable solution.

It is a human-by-hand solution, and they have thousands of customers that are not advanced users.

WHAT THE HELL was SOOOOOOO IMPORTANT that they sends a new virus database without betatesting IT!.

ah , other thing, why if AVAST want that everybody be up to date, why the ENGINE is not auto-upgrade too.?, I didn't know that there was a new free version, every time some popup for "upgrade avast to..." it showed for upgrade to PAYed version, not just another free, that wasn't quite clear. And I am a programmer, how many normal users will fail too.

Come on Avast,

Let,s have some answers here. This is URGENT.

I sincerely hope this is not (as another poster suggested), some form of forced upgrade. If it is, that would be a shocking thing for an anti-virus company to do to it's users, i.e. make their computer unprotected without any warning.

hehehe I am wearing the AVAST T-SHIRT since 3 years ago, so every customer that brought his CPU (with AVG or shitty Norton), they took his *new top tech / recommended / antivirus solution for free*, and some lessons for not accepting norton scan module when installing some software.

now I am in the middle of a storm of calls and I have NOT a handy solution yet.

Yeah, I actually could upgrade but what I don't like are the some new unnecessary features e.g. remote assistance (this seem for me like the backdoor left to hack my machines even if it's turned off), cloud streaming updates (cmon it connects with network all the time I monitor my network for every single connection made from and to my computer and I just don't like to see it popping all the time besides anything keept on the cloud might be more vulnerable to be hacked/manipulated because it's spread oh many machines so the risk is higher, sure it's faster but...) another thing I don't like are those web reps... I just hate it, no one will inspect what sites I browse and tell me if they are good to go or not. And of course that google chrome and toolbars... I know that in the version 7 there was the possibility to untick some of those and turn some other off in the settings after an installation but to avoid possible headaches I just decided to keep with older version because if engine and definitions are up to date that's all I need, I don't need any new features like the ones mentioned above. I've got no idea how it looks in newest version 8 though, I might test it out on my spare machine later but now I need my old Avast to be ON.

Igor,
Dumps in file Avast_dumps_6.0.1367_20130410a.zip for you in the incoming directory.
Uploading with Windows Explorer worked fine, I had been trying to use the command line version of ftp. Sorry.

Totally agree with this all the way. I like Avast 6 just the way it is and I have my doubts about the suitability of they way 7 and 8 work, but either way, shouldn't I have a CHOICE over what I put on my computer ? If it is working o.k. for me, why push new software on users if they don't want it. I can't remember (so numerous is the count), of the times I have used software for it to be "upgraded" only to find it then works nowhere near as well as it used to ( Adaware for instance who have decided that they will make you REMOVE your A/V if you want to use their anti-spyware programme as they have forced the inclusion of their own A/V into it). I no-longer use it anymore because of this.

Avast,  what's taking so long ?

Is an official reply too much to  ask ?

Nah, but I use my computer to work as I'm webmaster and whole my life rolls about the web, I've got bank passwords, business plans, hosting accounts passwords, domain registrar passwords just to name a few.. really all my life. :) Of course I don't even keep it on the harddrive but it's secured and encrypted on external disk but I'm not cleaver enough to know what information that Avast dump files store. I'm always a little paranoid about my stuff but so far it did not hurt me and I can say that being a little paranoid even helps sometimes to avoid many problems.

Hi!

Since the version '6.0.1367' avast changed the whole database concerning constuction , saving and more. Even the name of the 'avast'-archive changed from 'Alwil Software' into 'AVAST Software'!
So (with all this very old stuff) it can't work! Only a clean install helps!
Upgrading from version 7 to version 8 shouldn't be a problem: you can install the latest version '8.0.1483' without a clean install.

I have the same paranoya claims when I tried to sell my software as part of an online comunity/service, it is normal PPL thinks that if your app is always online connected to a central server, *you* as the owner/programmer are like FBI/CIA/whatever. But the real is always the opposite, WE just are not interested in WHAT any possible customer do or have.

If the customer understand that we are not terrorists / hackers / FBI / CIA / US. goverment, they just buy. If he is paranoid, -well, we sell the *unplug* capability only for payed licences, the freeware can't be unplugged.

anyway, why all ppl thinks that they are the center of universe and everybody want to spy him!. :P

Avast 6.0.1367 on this XP SP3 computer with all MS updates has stopped working    The Windows Security Center reports that Avast is running and protecting.  Avast tray icon has a RED X   Avast reports that all 8 shields are disabled.   Windows Services show that the "avast! Antivirus" service is not running.  Manually starting by right clicking the "avast! Antivirus" service entry and selecting "start",  fails to start the service.
I use a pop3 email program that relies on the Mail Scanner portion of Avast. The program is unable to connect to the mail server and gives a time out error message.   From the Avast interface window.  All shields display "PROTECTION STATUS UNKNOWN" and cannot be started.  Also the computer is very slow to boot and shut down.   All scans with TDSSKiller, Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware  show no infections.

Actually, 6.0.1367 has worked quite nicely up until today's update, so the statement "it can't work" is pretty blatantly wrong. Also, if you'll read through this thread, you'll see that updating to latest is not always a viable option for everyone.

So, now we have two folks inferring that Avast stopped all but 8? Really?
If so, trust me, there will be by the end of the day the biggest unloading of Avast in history.

My Avast has already been dumped after three years of enjoying their Internet Security Suite. Version 8 is nothing but junk. They cannot keep their servers online and their new product is rife with defects. I've moved on and I am sure I am not alone.

I'm right there, ready to push the "dump" button.
I am giving them the benefit of the doubt, but some of these high posting number folks make me wonder if it's worth waiting, if they are spouting Avast policy.
Personally, they have lost me on loading it in my other two computers with their Windoze8 Metro screen characteristics. Not interested, ever, in that stupidity.
It's just the one computer with Avast, had 7, now 8, and if they have decided that "updates" will kill the functionality of the older systems....did they ever think some folks might be on the road with an old laptop in a dial-up area only, and would prefer to do a full program update when back home on a faster connection?

I don't know if it applies to anyone else having Avast problems today, but it could be worth a try...?
See: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=120875.msg925598#msg925598

Just had to write and say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

This has now fixed every one of my computers. Why Avast could not tell users about this I do not know ?

You have helped so much, again THANK YOU !!

Program updates are set to ask by default.
If it happened automatically, it's because some settings where manually changed
without considering the possible consequences.
avast!8 is working well for me both at home Windows 8 Pro) and at our Senior Center (Windows XP).

Consider the facts that we have so far, ignoring innuendo, jumping to conclusions, broken inferences, and all the other things that make life fun:

1) Many people are reporting the same failure after downloading today's update.
2) We have someone from avast (Igor) who is actively trying to help, or at least was soliciting uploads of minidumps.
3) We are starting to get spotty reports in another thread(s) of a fix for this.

I fail to see how you can draw the conclusion that Avast has suddenly and without warning dropped support for 6 and 7.  I can support the conclusion that this was a flawed update that wasn't tested as well as it could have been. I've been a coder for a loooong time, these things happen from time to time.

As to Avast 8 is the /worst thing ever/best thing ever/other/, meh, that's as may be. It's doesn't really have anything to do with the problem reported in this thread.

As to posts from members with high post counts, the only thing you know from that is that they've made a lot of posts. This may be because they are a long time, deeply involved member of the community whose opinion should be heard and respected, or it may mean that they're a yappy idiot who doesn't know when to shut up. There's no way for a casual observer to know.

Another happy camper. Thanks M_W, the vpsupd.exe straightened things out nicely. Thanks much.

Just finished the data base down load and install followed by a reboot.  IT WORKED..
The installation message was:  Database update from 130410-00 to130410-01
Thanks for the info M_W
Avast should give you a lifetime paid subscription for your help here.

Do a little research it might answer your assumption.

There was no forced update, or cutting off of older versions.
Yes, there was a bug in the virus definitions that performed an incorrect internal operation on some machines (nothing dangerous, having no consequences... just something that is wrong). Why it manifested on old versions of avast! only? Starting with avast! 7, we have changed the behavior for specific "errors" - before that, the behavior was the default one implemented by the C compiler - which is "crash". On newer versions of avast!, it simply went on and worked correctly.

The updated virus definitions fix the problem. However, to install such updated definitions on an affected machine, the vpsupd.exe tool needs to be used.
(Another option might be to go into the Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs, select avast! Antivirus --> Change/Remove and use the Update option - but that updates the program to the latest version as well, not just the virus definitions.)

We are really sorry for the troubles...

Thanks to 'M_W' and 'igor'. I downloaded 'vpsupd.exe', ran it, (had to reboot) and Voila!!  All is fixed... even my speaker volume control is back in my taskbar (strange that it was affected as well). I had bunches of those 'unpxxxxxxx' files that igor wanted us to look for. Probably because I tried to do a repair through control panel.

Even though I'm on an older vers of avast, I still like it and can't update to the newer versions. Every so often avast has a hiccup, but all in all it's pretty reliable.

Thanks to all.

Very strange. I've been through rogue updates before, and usually the very FIRST thing that happens is a big, starred sticky at the top of the page. I went and looked.....nothing.
So, we need to drag through specific threads to find a specific post on how to correct something that should have been addressed with an immediate, critical, re-update so the users of Avast out there who do NOT frequent this forum aren't tearing their hair out?

If that's how it works, I'll go uninstall now, and be done with it.
Thanks, folks.

I don't think this is all avast fault, I have a feeling this has to do with the windows update last night. I came across this thread when searching around.

 Bad Windows Update 4/10/2013??
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/245c2696-59cb-4a05-94fe-ff763867f677

I saw where they we're talking about kaspersky having the same problem pretty much as avast right now. It just seems to me that it might end up being caused by the windows update.

Has anyone been able to get system restore to work? I've tried but it always ends in being unable to restore back to before this problem.

Yeah, using vpsupd.exe seems fixing the problem, thanks! Also good to know that older versions support is not dropped.
By the way, I've also noticed later before fixing the issue that some other symptoms were: no sound, and overall windows startup prolonged. I wonder how did avast have the influence on other system parts?

Don't think it had anything to do with Window's update.  I haven't done one of those in  about two years. Still on SP-2 as my hardware won't support some of the KBs in SP-3.

I noticed that Windows start was real slow too.  Took at least 7 or 8 mins to get all the services to start... except avast service.

I've had avast update its virus definitions since the 'vpsupd.exe' ran and all is still fine.

I seriously dont understand what in the world is wrong with you...this issue on older versions just popped up now and no one over here knew how to fix it and that's why there was so much of confusion and now once the fix is found then people who make a new topic over here about this will just be directly linked to the solution that was given in another topic.

I dont see the reason to stay on the old version and keep complaining about things that are non-existant with the latest version. That is just plainly stupid if you cant update to latest version and avoid the issues that may strictly arise with the old versions only then you cant blaim avast.I have all my clients running avast v8 without any problems and Avast is always been really reliable and not junky at all to me.Again,if you dont care to explain adequately your issues or what system specs, which avast version you use or anything we cant help you people out here as with over 180 million user base it is impossible to do so and everyone may have a different config on their systems which may create different issues.I dont understand why people want come into the forums like a "troll" literally bash avast like nothing and say that they are not going to use it again and rage quit on it.

This is just the facts. In all honesty,I am not trying to offend anyone;s personal opinion and my only point is "why would you use avast v6 when you have v8 out? and then face all these issues that could have plainly been avoided with v8 and this just.."

And to summarize, here is the solution to all your problems:

This wasn't directed to me, but I will give a bit of light on some sentences.

I am a software developer, so I considered myself an advance computer user/technician.

I was stuck with v6.0.14xx, why?

I though newer versions has a *spy* things?, Nah, I didn't thinks that, that is for paranoid ppl.

So, why?.

First I though every time that AVAST say "there is a new version UPGRADE NOW!", I watched the announce for some seconds (4 up to 7 seconds, and that is the average attention that an user will give to the announce), and IT was seen/though like AVAST is asking me to UPGRADE to A PRO/PAYED version, ohhh shit another spam from avast.

So I didn't know that there was V7 and V8 for FREE too at all, because the announce FAILs in BE CLEAR on first look (and also in a deeper look).

So, in my Developer's notebook I was stuck with v6 thinking that I was on the LAST, HIGH TECH, UPGRADE , UPDATED PROTECTION for FREE.

Every time AVAST sentme a popup it fails to transmit the message.

So, maybe all of you are genious in about computer programming/security, but failed AND A LOT in MARKETING / ANNOUNCES, taking care about human factors.

So, don't asks Why the hell some % of our users base, are still using v6 or v7 when we already asked a lot to move for v8!, here IS THE ANSWER!

Is real that a software company want more SELLS and profits, but also is real that a given big % of the users base wan't or can't pay, so they will ALWAYs be on the FREE licence, and if the announce fails in about comunicate that BASIC thing, all that % sill STAY on purpose on they own current old version (old version for you, but current last version for they).

You maybe can thinks, But we have a huge website, or ADs everywhere, but all you must understand, IF the Antivirus says "you are protected", It works!, no one will BROWSE your website AGAIN, and all ADs on internet just are ignored, only accidental click falls on ads :P

@flyguille,
Do you now feel better after all that ranting ???
None of which has anything to do with reasons for updating or, the problem which has already been addressed and fixed.

No!, that is the exact reason why I was using v6, I already fixed it in v6 YESTERDAY, then I upgraded it to v8 YESTERDAY.

So, TODAY, I dedicated a bit of time writing a message, trying to help AVAST ppl, just as a feedback (that in any company real & arbitrary feedback is quite precious).

But if you read carefuly it only aims as a feedback saying "change those announces" with more clear message to impact users in those 4 to 7 seconds that they will give up before closing it.

Add me to the list of people that experienced this yesterday (same 6 version as others). Thinking I had a virus/malware  that had somehow affected avast, I removed avast through add/remove programs, downloaded a different resident AV while I tried to figure out what was going on, did some scans with various other programs.  I don't like the new one as well, so need to decide whether to install the latest avast version, reinstall the avast version I had before using the fix that's been posted here (I keep all exe installation downloads, so that might work), or go with something else. Avast has been great in the past for me, though, so I'd love to stick with it.

I had other issues, like the sound, as well, which is why I originally thought it was a virus or malware that had gotten through and went down that path first. Would be interesting to know how the problem some of us were having with avast could have affected things like sound and programs opening VERY slowly. (I'm always SO curious about stuff...LOL!)

Je renouvelle ma licence, et je m'aperçois, qu'elle était encore bonne
c'est une arnaque.
Les agents sont toujours arretés

Hello all,

Problems solved on my side.
The next morning, Computer #1 had automatically updated to the latest version.
But strangely enough, Computer #2 (identical system configuration) didn't do anything.... Checked for malware again and found some. Deleted them. Then read new messages here and applied this instruction :

(Another option might be to go into the Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs, select avast! Antivirus --> Change/Remove and use the Update option - but that updates the program to the latest version as well, not just the virus definitions.)

It worked ;o)

Thanks for helping.
