Title: Avast Updated to an Earlier Version
Post by: Johnny4745 on April 21, 2013, 02:13:19 AM
I got a pop up that said an update was available.  I had Avast 8, and after the update, I have version 7.0.1455.

I would like to know how this happened.

So would I.

Are/were you using the beta build of avast 8 ?
The reason I ask this is because avast 7.0.1455 wasn't a regular release build for avast 7.0 and essentially you can't update to a beta build from a regular build. http://www.avast.com/release-history (http://www.avast.com/release-history)

As far as I know I wasn't using the beta version.  I have the paid version of Internet Security.

I have sent a ticket in to support, and uploaded all necessary files.

It would be nice if I could copy and paste the path to the files generated, but that is not possible.  When I tried to go to "C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\Support\20130421_0104_2434209736.zip", it did not exist, but when I generated the files in Avast Support, it showed the path.

I clicked on the path to the files generated, and it took me to the files.  I had to make a shortcut to the desktop and copy the path from there.

That is the correct version.

The C:\ProgramData\ folder (and its contents) is often hidden by windows, can you even see the C:\ProgramData\ folder ?

If not try changing the windows explorer settings:
Ensure that you have enabled the 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' option and disable hide system files in Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, Hidden files and folders, uncheck Hide extensions for known file types, etc. see image.

I would suggest that you do a clean reinstall of the latest AIS version 8.0.1483:
- Download the latest version of avast, 8.0.1483 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all versions).
NOTE: You will have to have saved your license key as you will need to re-enter that.

Note: 7.0.1455 is the current business client version.

Thanks Asyn.

Weird how the OP would end up with that and I though that the client versions were avast Pro not AIS ?

I had show hidden folders selected, but when I went back and checked, it wasn't selected.  I guess Avast changed it during the install.  I can see the full report.

I have my key saved.  I'm going to follow your instructions and uninstall Avast, and download the newest version.

1. Thanks Asyn.

1. NP Dave.
2. This seems to be a (seldom occurring) bug in 1483, the newer betas are not affected.
3. That depends on the EP version.

It has never changed the hidden files and folders settings in either of my systems XP Pro or win7, but there are some tools out there that do change those settings.

Let us know how you get on.

I was able to completely uninstall Avast from the control panel.  I did run the uninstall program you recommended also.  I now have the latest version, and the license is active.

Thanks for the help.
