after insalling avast4.6.623 I am not able to use it even after entering the registation key. Error messages like " Unknown error . storage could not be created in splash" and "cannot save parameters in the storage - Errot dbsCreate Object"
I am using Win98 SE with Internet Explorer removed and Firefox installed.
Athlon XP 1600+ with 256 MB

You may try to open the <avast>\data\avast4.ini file and in the [Common] section, change the item Database=ODBC to Database=XML. This could prevent the Microsoft Jet drivers from accessing the database... does it have any (positive) effect?

unfortunately I don't know how to do it. Is it by editing the registry?
Is the problem due to absence of Internet Explorer? During installation, there was a message that the program requires IE 4 or later.

No, the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\avast4.ini file.
But you can download avast External Control on the link 'Control' in my signature.
Use the proper option to tweak your installation.

I think not, IE is only needed to display help files and other HTML issues not related to your problem.
