Title: installing avast in win98 and win2k
Post by: pscraja on September 20, 2003, 10:03:14 AM
I had installed avast 4 a few months ago and it was working quite fine. Suddenly the system crashed. Since my system is  dual booting,  I have now switched over to win2k.  Avast 4 has not been installed in this.

Please clarify:
Whether I Can reinstall avast in the same directory in which I had originally installed while I was working with win98se.

Or in otherwods, can both win 98se and win 2k share the same avast 4 folder?

Can someone advise me?

I'd recommend against doing this. I mean, this appplies to any software. The reason is that almost every program maintains some data, be it in a DB, file or registry. Since the registry is not shared between the two OS's, some of the data would be shared and some not, which may have unexpected consequences...

I'm not saying it won't work - I'm just warning that bad things can happen. :)

From my own experience....DONT DO IT!  VLK is correct.

If you need to reinstall Avast, you must be running the OS to which it will be "partnered"

In a dual boot situation, this does not occur because of registry changes.

The problem that went unresolved with my system was WHY my computer crashed after Avast was installed.  A complete reformat of the system, and restore of W98 was needed.  Avast and W98 have been happily living together again.
I would assume that my W98 was on the way out and some conflict arose with the drivers in Avast that pushed it over the edge.  Not really the fault of Avast.

Avast likes things simple.  Try not to confuse it with dual boots and sharing registry entries.

Good luck.
