Title: AdBlocker disappearing in FF 21???
Post by: ky331 on May 14, 2013, 11:40:27 PM
Is it just me (Win7x64 Pro SP1 and XP PRO SP3) --- or did Avast's AdBlocker extension "disappear" from [and thereby stop working in] today's Firefox 21 update???

I just updated FF to Version 21 but I don't use Avast's AdBlocker.  I use AB+, an extension in FF.

Software Updater also reports Mozilla Firefox's new version as v 20.0.1 - (Guess everything takes time to be updated.)

I checked thinking FX v 21.0 had made a change to their "Options" folder, but do not see anything about Avast! Ad Blocker being removed. Avast! Ad Blocker always had appeared as a Firefox "Add-On" prior to FX v 21.0

This is completely normal behavior. Give them time to update. Firefox just go updated today. You can use ABP instead anyways. It also has more features and customizations. Norton fans are always complaining when the Norton toolbar does not work as soon as new version of there browser comes out. A week later its fixed.

No, it's not. Firefox 21.0 Beta has been out for six weeks now, the dev builds even longer. Besides, why do my other 14 extensions work if this is normal? ???

It is normal. Check the Symantec forums. Check Kaspersky forums. Why make it such an issue when you can just use Ad Block Plus extension on its own. The minute a new version of Firefox or Chrome comes does not mean that Avast has to be on top of it. Gezzz. I feel like the Symantec forums all over again.

Well, my 14 other extensions (mostly security related) managed to be ready for Firefox 21.0 release, and that's a fact, not BS and excuses.

In my opinion, what happened here is NOT normal.

First off, FF now checks its new versions for compatibility with existing add-ons, and normally advises the user of any conflicts it finds (before completing the installation)... and will show the "offending" add-on as being disabled.

In contrast, what happened today:
1)  there was no warning/message from FF that an incompatible add-on had been encountered.
2)  rather than merely showing the add-on as present but disabled, the best why I can describe what happened is that FF completely "swallowed" the add-on... it's gone from within FF!   Interestingly, Avast was still showing it as being installed.   Moreover, uninstalling and reinstalling it doesn't work... it will NOT show up in FF at all [i.e., not even as being there but disabled].
3) and its absence is not just a mirrage/oversight, as the add-on no longer works in FF.

The fact that AdBlockPlus may be more comprehensive, or work better, does not mitigate what happened here.

I don't even bother to use Ad Blocker for Avast!. The version of Avast! Free Edition that introduced Ad blocker I simply rejected to install it. That's my preference

Solution to Avast's AdBlocker disappearing in FF 21:

Close Firefox.  Navigate to your

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions

folder, locate the   adblocker@avast.com.xpi   file, and move (or copy) it to your

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\browser\extensions

folder.   Open Firefox, and allow it permission to install the add-on.

Note:  On an x64-bit system, specify    Program Files (x86)        [rather than simply    Program Files    ] when navigating to the sub-directories.

Explanation:   FF21 has changed the folder where it stores (some of) its extensions.   For a full explanation, see http://www.ghacks.net/2013/05/15/why-you-may-have-lost-access-to-plugins-or-extensions-in-firefox-21/
I wish to thank RedDawn (from the DeLL forum) for pointing out this article to me  :)
