When I update Avast! 4 virus database can I backup that files so that if I reinstall my OS I don't need to update it again??

darkman,

You could, but it is only extra work.  If you by change reinstall your OS, one simple click on the Update button in Avast will not only download the VPS database you had, but update it to the latest signatures files in only a few short moments.

Why put back files that may be out of date when you do it?

If you wish, just go into the Alwil folder in the Program files directory and locate the VPS data file (400.vps) which should appear under DATA.
Make a copy and you then only need to put it back into the same folder and directory where you made the original copy.

Not a biggie.  :)

It's not recommended doing that as you can have a corrupted installation.
Download the full vps file and run it to update an off-line computer.
I suppose you do not 'install' your OS that frequently  ;D
