"We built Windows 8 for a world where touch is a first class interaction model,..."

Microsoft was sure wrong about that.

Sales/revenues wise MicroSoft will figure out Win8 or W8 has turned out to be a dud. IMHO!  ;D

They can't say they weren't warned, the long preview and public preview/beta tests had many reviewers saying this was a step too far trying to make it a one size fits all and essentially abandon the desktop users and anyone without a touch screen. But they ignored all of the pleas/comments/reviews and blundered on, now they are finding out that they reap what they sow.

They talk of 100 million win8 installations or some such, but in the time since it was released there have been 200 million system sales, so there is a very large number of people avoiding it in its current state. The win8 OS market share must make dismal reading at MS.

No point saying that there are utilities to get back the desktop interface, people shouldn't have to go to these lengths.

They are also shooting themselves in the foot with the locking of the UEFI to prevent wiping and installing another OS in place of win8. God MS are getting as bad as Apple in these Protectionist/Proprietary measures.

Since this is suppose to bring back the start button, Will classic shell and start8 still work?

I believe that they will still work something out, given that 8.1's inclusion of the Start button doesn't give the full functionality of the win7 Start button functionality.

Well let's see what 8.1 has to offer. So far I hate all about w8. One thing I never understated since the beginning of W8, why they not adapted W8 for all platform? At installation should ask you what do you want: touch interface for tablet, or desktop interface for desktop use. I know this is about to change in upcoming release, but so far I'm happy with my old W7  ;D
Personally I'll skip the W8, I'll wait w9, or why not w10 :D

OT: I wouldn't get W9 and I would rather wait until W10 IF MS doesn't screw it up again, otherwise I'll used my colour marker pens and write on their butt "Please Kick MS from behind for being bloody stupid & brainless"

IF my W8 with ClassicShell and it not broken on my new laptop, I wouldn't be bloody bothered to installed W8.1 I would rather leave it well alone.

Amazing, negative already and it hasn't even been release to the public.
Think positive. It will make all other things much easier. :)

I was positive about win8 during the MS marketing (hype phase) blurb, in fact I was very likely to have had as my next desktop system OS and sidestep win7 on my desktop. But the more reviews I read the less positive I was and after the many adverse reviews after its release I really don't know if I will ever get it, so I too will be waiting to see what win9 brings to the party.

I truly believe MS squandered the generally good position they had with win7 after the disastrous Vista version, but they completely threw that away. They should have built on that good position instead of completely diving off at a tangent.

By forcing this one size fits all OS primarily designed for touch screen interface, business users don't want to have to retrain their staff and desktop users were/are in no rush to jump on this OS.

I suppose they hope that come April 2014 MS hope all of the XP (38.31% mrkt share) hold outs will adopt win8 (3.82% mrkt share), I think they are in for another surprise there too and I don't think the limited change of win8.1 is going to change that much.

This is very interesting to see XP is still holding strong in the market share let wait and see what happen when the XP support is over at 2014 ;)

IMO, it will stay strong and maybe even support will be extended.

I don't really see what everyone's problem with win8 actually is ??? it is essentially two operating systems in one, on one side it's windows 7 minus the start menu ( easily replaced ) on the other side is the windows 8 modern system and either can be used individually or combine the use of both.

I've even started using one of my systems without the start menu to force myself to get used to the system without that feature and the more time that goes by I'm realising that the start menu is really just superficial and not needed as long as your willing to learn new things, it's not that hard :)

(http://freeemoticonsandsmileys.com/3D%20Smileys/3D%20Emotion%20Smileys/thinking.gif) It might be okay for you as your willing to learn new things, however it not easy for some other people who doesn't have the time to learn new thing because it's very hard to change their old bloody habit that this for example as I love watch this ;D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69RllXjCL6o

Craig, if you're referring to my post, I've no problem with it, just don't really need it (yet). ;)

I wasn't referring to your post Asyn :)

Speedy for those users who don't want to learn new things then it's quite easy to install a start menu replacement which will boot to desktop and they will never even have to see the modern screen if they choose not to.

I learned how to use win 8,and am an old person.Dont under estimate the capability of older people. In my opinion its the younger generation that is just plain too lazy to take the time to learn something different. Some people dont like change of any kind.I like my Xp, vista and win 8. I use all 3 all the time, switching from one to the other I dont notice much diferance except for speed and thats very minor.
An OLD GUY.

It's very difficult to think positive about something worse than Vista.
I had a Vista which was nothing less than a PITA.
I have a Win7 and I only hope MS will support it for a very long time.

History lesson...
1) XP       Solid
2)Vista    Stunk
3)Win7    Solid
4)Win8    Stunk
5)            Do you see a pattern?  ;D

As one of the Spring Chickens on this forum, I can attest to the fact that there isn't anything wrong with Windows 8
that a little bit of applying oneself to a small learning curve wouldn't cure.
If you don't want to learn, then add a small program and you'll be back to using Windows 7 only better.
It's faster than seven, runs anything that Windows 7 runs and, even runs some programs that Windows 7 never did.
It's more secure than Windows 7.
I'd consider it a Solid OS which I've used for quite some time.
Updating it to version 8.1 will only improve the product. :)

Except for the Start Menu, Win8 is better than Win7 in my computer.
Oh, the backup got worse...

Start Menu is easily fixed and the backup if you use the Windows 7 Backup on Windows 8 (http://youtu.be/llb2gKKoFiI) is exactly
the same.

The default backup in Windows 8 doesn't create an Image unless you revert back to the Windows 7 Backup.
The procedure is very easy. (http://youtu.be/llb2gKKoFiI)

You've made a change since the default back up is called File History,
it lets you automatically back up files to a network drive or cable-connected external hard drive every 10 minutes.
It is not and does not create a system image.
In order to create a System image you need to revert back to the Windows 7 Backup (http://youtu.be/llb2gKKoFiI).

What I find interesting is; the folks who do not run Win8 and/or have never developed a personal experience with the OS (never used it) but yet are so opinionated against it.
Just interesting that's all ??? :)

It's possible to get to know an Operating System without using it, by reading Windows 7 and Windows 8 forums, and just reading the reviews and news articles written about Windows 8.

I think the people that chose not to use Windows 8 are very informed people, that made the right decision.

What would really be interesting, is to know how many people were forced into using Windows 8 by buying a new computer, and how many actually purchased the operating system from Microsoft.

Most of these "critics" used it in a virtual mode for a few minutes or hrs. and used that experience to form their opinion.
The internet is full of these "reviewers". We also find them on his forum quite often.
Sorry but the post before mine seems to prove my point.
They usually force avast! onto their system without first removing what was protecting them
and then when things don't work well, complain all over the net that avast! isn't worth trying.
I see it daily and have run into these critics in person during my presentation.
Once it's proven to them that the problem isn't avast! but their own inability to follow instructions,
they usually change their attitude and opinion.
There are always those that will never change their opinion and never admit that they made a mistake.
We seem to have quite a few of those on the forum lately...... :(

Reviews, Reviews what a joke!!
I've always found things out for myself,,,,,,not from someone elses experience.
All experiences are different. There is no patent on opinion. ;D ;D ;D ;)

I actually seen this coming since windows 8.0 was in a preview like build :P  Windows 8.1 won't be much different then Windows 8 though.. I heard good things like that it will have a start button that will bring you to the metro start screen..

With all due respect, I have used a friends Win8 enough to form an opinion on my own. It still stinks.
Win8 was ill conceived and developed. MS should know by now how to get it right.
I question the ability of MS to do decent and in depth research before releasing a monstrosity.
Obviously they misjudged what users want and/or need. Metro tiles are very ill-suited for an office environment.
A pocket phone, yes. Office or home use, no.  8)
