Title: Any comments on the 4.6.652 version?
Post by: Vlk on April 20, 2005, 04:13:34 PM
Hi all,

I'm bemused that no one has reported a problem with the new build yet - is it really that good? :) Or it's just that you haven't installed it yet. :-\

;D

Thanks

Everything working perfectly... Installed it the minute it came out... Even posted it to Wilders update notifications.  :)

Seems to work fine here :)

just a question:

What is your advice to use Ad Muncher with WebShield without having the proxy?
The only way is to set OptIn=0?

Thanks and keep the good work :)

Heh VLK, sometimes the good programs like your Avast just work.
I still did not get a prompt to update, but read it elsewhere being available.

So installed in my admin account though it might have been possible also with my XP Limited one I normally only run.

Been a happy Avast user over a half year, but still do update my On-Demand only now pay scanner Norman that updates not as often as Avast :)

Perfect  8)  ;)
I expect nothing less than this  ;D

Just to report: the two iPush emails received 'while' updating to 4.6.652 report an error: error during processing.
I'm thinking that the ashMaiSv.exe was in the 'middle' of the update process and generated an error... Am I right?

My only comment has to do with the new Zone Alarm detection.

Probably the new detection can't distinguish between ZA Pro and the free version which I use, but maybe that pop-up screen the first time you start the new avast could clarify that the privacy-protection features are not in the free ZA and therefore (for most people) it's fine to check "No" if that's what you're using.

Admittedly that's partly covered in that "no previous problems" wording, but a little expansion/clarification wouldn't hurt.

I continue to have the same problem related here: Connection Timeout with avast 4.6 and thunderbird (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=11596.0) :(

Post by: sded on April 20, 2005, 05:12:02 PM
Do you also get a connection timeout in Outlook Express?  Even if you are not normally an OE user, OE has the capability to log all of the mailserver activity when you try to read or send a message.  Setup is about the same as TB for the server, but under tools/options/maintenance you can select to log all the server messages.  Might help figure out the problem-unless, of course, everything runs fine with OE.

Well, the thing is, there seem to be some problems related to ZA/WebShield interaction even in the case of ZA Free. It's strange, but that's the way how it is. :)
My personal hypothesis is that some of the privacy blocking features are still present in the Free edition of ZA (not configurable, they're just there)...

Time will tell if this was a wise decision, but for now, it's IMHO better that 10 people will reconfigure the stuff manually than for 1 to be unable to browse the web.

No problems here.  But what is new?

http://www.avast.com/eng/av4_revision_history.html (http://www.avast.com/eng/av4_revision_history.html)

Version 4.6.652
April 19, 2005

    * WebShield: solved problems with displaying of certain pages (incorrect handling of connection close)
    * WebShield: removed NETBIOS reverse lookup (access to UDP port 137) (same applies to the mail scanner)
    * WebShield: added detection of ZoneAlarm and subsequent deactivation of transparent proxy mode
    * better ability of dealing with corrupted archives
    * minor enhancements in some unpackers (RAR, ZIP, TAR, GZIP, ZOO)
    * added support for SIS archives (SymbianOS installation archives)
    * fixes in the mail scanner: problems with multiple simultaneous connections, removal of superfluous sending in case of client timeout
    * boot-time scan: removed limit of total length of the folder paths (1024B)
    * fixed a bug causing lack of detection of certain virus types under Windows NT 4.0

Just two comments:
1. Clicking the link at the bottom of transparent proxy & Zone Alarm warning screen opens Firefox (my default browser) with completely new and clear profile - which may confuse some users :)
2. Browser (on Windows XP /SP2/) is started with LocalService privileges what, I think is not a very good idea...

Interesting detail, but you seem to be right :)
It's because it's called by the WebShield service.

Working perfectly with Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Firefox and Thunderbird.  All previous problems with web shield are gone.
As far as my 3 year old machine is concerned, this is the best version yet.

"A" is the first letter in the alphabet and AVAST is first for antivirus protection.   ;D

Well everything isn't so perfect. There is a bug in Chest submission mechanism.
You fixed the checkbox, not to show submission protocol (SMTP/MAPI) which works correctly now,but problem is that SMTP/MAPI selected setting isn't persistant and is always automatically switched back to MAPI,even though i have selected SMTP (and checked not to show me that dialog again).
Now i also cannot find any way to get that SMTP/MAPI selection dialog back again (Outlook Express Create new profile opens directly). Please fix this, because i'm unable to send anything to you via Chest.

what's the best way to update to a new version ?? uninstall old version first or just install 'on top' of old version ?

Hi!
I am still using avast home 4.6.623 without any single problem so far..
Is it worth to update to the new 4.6.562 version since the 4.6.623 works flawlessly?Does 4.6.562 offer any significant additional security/protection features?
Or is it mainly a bug fix version for problems that some users had with 4.6.623 (especially with the Webshield)?
Thanks!

In fact, it seems most a 'fixed' version (WebShield and firewalls, specially ZoneAlarm).
But it includes some other features and corrections in the mail scanner and archive file types.
You won't regret on updating...  8)

Ok, to scan it needs some time... But it shouldn't be that much...
Did you disable the 'inteligent stream scanning' into the WebShield properties (settings)?

Ok  I have searched but can not find a thread on this

when I installed the update (using Zone alarm free) I got a wonderful info box on the fact that there might be a problem along with a yes /no boxes about letting avast do the trans changing below this was a link for "How to configure your zone alarm proxy"
I figured I would click on that after hitting the Yes button but it closed
and now I have no idea where I stand ?? I don;t see any problems but it was clear I needed to make changes to Zone alarm can someone PLEASE tell me what they are

thanks guys
Hey Technical' funny start of this thread -yes you are that good
and I am sure this issue of mine is minor

Dear DavidR
I'm totally confused now, sorry!
I am running the newest V4.6.652 without problems, except the nuisance shutdown problem.

BUT: WebShield, I did never configure it with a proxy, didn't know about that. And in fact looking at those screens mentioned in the movies for IE6 and Firefox, the proxy is not set. But looking at the screen WEBSHIELD inside Avast (from taskbar icon one-click) I can see the shield operating, I see the number of checked items (about 5000 after 24h) and I see the internet address of the last checked page, which corresponds nicely with my browsing.
NOW: Is this a automatic setup thing working here, may I disregard the explicit instructions of those movies, or what? I am truly confused. Please advise me, and maybe others too... thanks a lot, Hanspeter

1. My post was in direct response to this post - http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=12912.msg109272#msg109272 as they were looking for the tutorial.

Earlier versions of avast automatically used web shield and the transparent proxy, set-up was not required, However, with version 4.6.652, avast checks for the presence of Zone Alarm and gives the user the option not to enable the transparent proxy, they will need to set their browsers proxy so that it works with web shield.

The Tutorial only relates to those using Zone Alarm and have chosen to set-up the proxy themselves, rather than have any conflict with web shield and ZA's privacy settings.

The lessor of two evils would be to manually set-up the proxy (as you have done), rather than have the potential conflict between ZA's privacy settings and avast's web shield.

If you have entered the 12080, that is correct, if not and you have entered 2080 then you need to change it. There is a bit of a problem with the tutorial as it is only showing 2080 (the 1 is missing or out of sight).

Thank you, DavidR...

I did enter 12080, but after I enter the last zero, only 2080 shows in the box...so does that mean it took the whole number or just the last four? Sorry for such a simple question, but I don't want to take anything for granted. :-[

Athene, the 12080 should be there, but the text box will only show the last four digits. Try highlighting the number back to the beginning and see if the elusive "1" is there.

It means that you have a different language module installed (i.e. non English). You cannot update such an installation with the English-only setup package.
Could you simply update online, by invoking the program update?

New version seems to be working well on XP SP2 here.

One thing i have noticed is that during the boot time scan, it says some of my quake 3 maps are corrupt with the error code 42125.

There only 3 or 4 of them, just that it never listed then as corrupt before?
