Hi, I have a problem where XP won't boot normally and hangs on aswrvrt.sys when booting in safe mode.
Hope you can help me with this problem.
Thanks, Richard
-
Hi what happened prior to the failure to boot... Did you download any updates at all ?
Please print these instruction out so that you know what you are doing
- Download OTLPENet.exe (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTLPENet.exe) to your desktop
- Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FRST.exe) and save it to a flash drive.
- Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
- Double click OTLPENet.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
- Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here (http://www.hiren.info/pages/bios-boot-cdrom)
- As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads :)
- Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
- Insert the flash drive with FRST on it
- Locate the flash drive and run FSRT
- The tool will start to run.
- When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
- Press Scan button.
- It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
-
Windows updates were the last thing I did before this problem.
Attached it the FRST.txt file.
Thanks for you help!
-
Windows updates seems to be doing this a lot just lately
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same usb as FRST
Run FRST as before and press fix
When it has completed reboot to normal windows
-
Hi Essexboy,
I followed your instructions and now Windows XP boots correctly both in Safe Mode and Normal.
You really made my day by helping me out. I really appreciate your support.
Thanks again and Have a Wonderful Weekend!
Richard
-
My pleasure :)
-
Windows updates seems to be doing this a lot just lately
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same usb as FRST
Run FRST as before and press fix
When it has completed reboot to normal windows
Hi! I've followed the steps, attached FRST.txt, please fix it
Thanks much!
-
Hi this one is an infection, partially activated
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same USB as FRST
Run FRST as before and press FIX
On completion reboot to normal windows
Download OTL (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe) to your Desktop
Secondary link (http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/OTL.exe)
- Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
- Select All Users
- Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
netsvcs
BASESERVICES
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start

explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
/md5stop
dir "%systemdrive%\*" /S /A:L /C
CREATERESTOREPOINT
- Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
- When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
- Attach both logs
-
Hi,
When I try to run the OTL.exe, it syas: "This application has failed to start because framedyn.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem"
What should i do/reinstall?
Thanks
-
Ok, I think I've fixed it but I've only got one file after running it. Please see attached.
-
You appear to be running from the Reatogo desktop, was the system able to boot to normal mode ? As that is where I would like you to run OTL from
-
I don't know, I just run it as is... I have some new interface there. Can/Should I change it some how?
-
Yes could you remove the USB and reboot to normal windows please
-
Oh, lol. I had the feeling that what's causing it... I'm affraid though that I'll get that framedyn.dll error again. I'll do it when I'll get home from work later this evening
-
Download a fresh copy of OTL once in normal windows
Download OTL (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe) to your Desktop
Secondary link (http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/OTL.exe)
- Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
- Select All Users
- Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
netsvcs
BASESERVICES
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start
services.*
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
/md5stop
dir "%systemdrive%\*" /S /A:L /C
CREATERESTOREPOINT
- Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
- When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
- Post both logs
-
I can't because I can't connect to the internet. It doesnt recognize my network card. I'm trying to install the driver, but it takes ages. Is the file I've sent completely useless?
-
What error do you get from windows when you try to access the net ?
Download the attached fix.txt to your desktop
Run OTL and press run fix
OTL will ask for the location of the fix.txt
Navigate to and select the file you downloaded and press run fix again
-
I did it. It erased avast. I tried to reboot it without the CD, got stcuk at aswRvrt.sys again...
-
Attached is the fix log
-
How did you remove Avast ?
-
I don't know, when pressed the Fix button he asked me if I want to remove avast, so I thought this was the whole point, so I clicked yes.
I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever be able to turn my machine on again :-\ ....
-
There was nothing in the fix to do with Avast
I will replace the userinit now to see if that helps
Download the attached fix.txt as before
Run OTL and press run fix
OTL will ask for the location of the fix.txt
Navigate to and select the file you downloaded and press run fix again
-
Cant i just open the fix.txt and copy paste it into the OTL? Seem to work better that way
-
Sure that would work :)
-
After the fix I still can't reboot. Attached is the log.
Thanks
-
Where is the boot stopping now, which driver
-
Same- aswRvrt.sys
-
Do you have an XP CD as we may need to do a repair install
-
Yes, I have. Should I just reinstall windows?
-
You can either do that, which will give you a fresh faster XP or we can repair it. Repair retains the personal files
Given the choice I would back up the data you need and do a fresh install
-
I'm having the same problem. I'm attaching the file. Thank you. Carolyn
-
@miranetta I have placed a fix for you here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=131889.new#new
Please continue in that thread
-
OK. Thanks for your time! Sorry it didn't work out. But I appreciate your effort ;)
-
Sorry we were unable to resolve this
-
I have the same problem with my Vista OS.
Repair OS doesn't work
I run AVG Rescue CD : nothing found
I've attached the log generated by FRST (Farbar Recovery Scan Tool)
Any idea ?
-
You have has a lot of blue screens just lately looking at that data. What I will do first is remove McAfee
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same USB as FRST
Run FRST as before and press fix
On completion try a normal boot
-
Thanks very much for your help.
No pb with the fix

OK as soon as you get to normal windows run MSConfig
You will need to be fast
Next we will check for driver conflicts
Step 1: Start MSConfig
Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
Step 2: Configure Selective Startup options
1.In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click Selective Startup on the General tab.
2.Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
Note The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.
3.Click the Services tab.
4.Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
5.Click Disable All, and then click OK.
6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
Once back in windows does the problem still occur ?
-
Thanks for this response but I haven't enough time, I only can select user before blue screen.
So I can"t follow your instructions :-(
-
What appears to be happening here is a driver is crashing the system in normal mode and failing to load in safe mode. Prior to the boot failure did you install any new programmes or get some updates ?
-
No new installation, only updates of programs.
I can't be sure about the list of updates, but I think : avast, Windows firewall
At one moment normal mode didn't work and safe mode worked well. I've decided to delete unused application (dropbox...)
And after, event the safe mode didn't work
Is it possible to have logs about last install/unisntall in my system ?
Florent

Lets see if we can examine the lates minidump. They appear to have become more frequent prior to the not booting
From the recovery disc command prompt would you be able to copy this file C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini080913-06.dmp to the USB and then upload it to a file sharing site so that I can collect it and see what is crashing
-
I put all minidumps in this zip : http://wikisend.com/download/547326/Minidump.zip (http://wikisend.com/download/547326/Minidump.zip)
I hope it will help...
-
OK got it, the Avast self protection driver is corrupted
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same USB as FRST
Run FRST as before and press Fix
On completion reboot to normal windows
Avast will be inoperative on reboot
-
Great :-) !
Normal Vista boot is OK after fix execution
But now, no antivirus ?
May I launch fresh instal of Avast! ?
-
Yes download a fresh copy from one of these direct links
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe)
Avast Pro (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe)
Avast Internet Security (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe)
Avast Premier (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe)
-
OK, new release of Avast is installed on my computer
Thank you very much Essexbox ;D
Thanks for your patience and your support
-
My pleasure, take care now :)

Initially I will try to restore the computer to a time prior to the windows updates
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST

Windows updates are causing Avast a multitude of problems as the last file loaded is an Avast one so people see that and say it is Avasts fault
Could you try the following :
Enable AHCI by following either of the steps below, depending on your board model:
1.Press the F2 key after the Power-On-Self-Test (POST) memory test begins.
2.Select the Configuration menu, then the SATA Drives menu.
3.Set the Chipset SATA Mode to AHCI.
4.Press the F10 key to save the BIOS settings and exit the BIOS Setup program.
-
Hi, I am having the same problem. I ran the FRST program as suggested in the first post and attached is the FRST.txt file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-
Same problem. Ran farbar. Here is te txt file. Can you help? Thank you.
-
Could you create your own threads please as each fix will be unique and confusion could result
-
New post done under bubblecom
-
Sorry I can't start a new thread. I'm having the same situation like the others.
Attached the FRST.exe file.
Reply the fix using my screen name please.
Thanks a lot!

-
You have a zero access infection .. What happened prior to the boot failure ?
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same USB as FRST
Run FRST as before and press Fix
Once completed then reboot to normal mode
-
No luck!
Problem still persists :(
-
Try this fixlist.txt same as before
-
Cannot start Windows normally.
When using Safe Mode with networking now stops at mup.sys
-
I am afraid the system is broken and a reformat is required. Do you have a backup image or would you like me to provide a programme to enable you to back up data
-
Thanks for your help Essexboy!
I can handle this next step, no worries. If I get stuck, I'll let you know.
-
Sorry we could not resolve this
-
Hi
Am new to this so was not sure whether to start a new thread or tag on.
I have had the same headline problem. Went out leaving the computer on and came back to find it cycling trying to boot. Tried to boot in safe mode but just hangs at aswrvrt and cycles again.
Should I download OTLPen and Frst and follow instructions at start of thread?
-
What operating system are you using ?
-
Hi
Am running basic XP yhat came with the machine
-
Yes download OTLPE and FRST to generate the logs
-
Apologies for the delay. I burnt the disc and tried to boot from it but the frozen PC says:
Disk boot failure, Insert system disk & press enter.
Tried a couple of times then went to my good machine to check the CD had the right files on it. I assume the disc burnt correctly.
Not sure what to do now
-
Sounds like you have a hardware problem, can you access the safe mode menu, just the menu not safe mode itself
-
I'm not sure.... if I press F8 I get up the boot menu and try to start in safe mode but it does nothing. Is there another route?
-
At the menu select Command Prompt
Type in the following command and press enter :
chkdsk /r
This will take a while to run run, but once it has finished try a normal boot
-
Tried chkdsk but it only does 50% and then says 'one or more irecoverable problems'??
Am loathe to keep trying in case the hard drive is failing.
-
It appears to be the problem, your hard drive is either going south or the MFT and file system is badly messed
-
Thanks for the help and I will probably pull the drive and then interrogate with another PC.
I had hoped we could get the system to boot so as to get all the files off easier and thought it must be a minor problem as the PC had been working fine.
Is there any good software that can pull the files without the OS?
-
You could try Reatogo
Download Peazip (http://peazip.googlecode.com/files/peazip-4.7.3.WINDOWS.exe) to the desktop
Run and install the programme
As it installs this page will show, deselect the AVG ticks
Press decline and it will then install cleanly
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/peazip.jpg)
Download the following files to the desktop .. Right click the links and select save as...then select desktop
Rufus (http://rufus.akeo.ie/downloads/rufus_v1.3.2.exe)
OTLPE_standard (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTLPEStd.exe)
Right click OTLPE on your desktop and select ..Open as archive
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/Unzup%20archive.png)
Select OTLPE standard
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/select%20archive.PNG)
Click Extract, ensure that desktop is selected
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/extract%20archive.PNG)
Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/rufus.JPG)
Select the ISO file on the desktop via the ISO icon.
Press Start Burn
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/RufusISO.JPG)
Once the USB has burnt then boot from that to an XP style desktop
-
Hi Essexboy
Sorry for the delay in getting back on this.
Decided to pull the drive and see if I could get my data off using a laptop but get the message 'File or directory is corrupted and unreadable' when it is connected. The laptop sees the drive which spins up and seems to be doing things.
Thought I must be doing something wrong so put hd back in PC and ran Linux Puppy. After mounting the drive it sees all the files I want to get at but will not copy them. It just hangs...
So.... pulled drive again checking at each stage what I was doing but still get the 'corrupted & unreadable message'
Should I try your Peazip suggestion or is there something else I should do? Sorry to be a pain but there is about 3 months of important data I would prefer not to lose.
The help is much appreciated
-
You could try OTLPE as that gives full XP functionality but as Puppy had problems this may well experience the same. Especially as the drive appears to be bad
-
Essexboy, I followed this thread to the point of needing fixlist.txt. Attached is my log if you could please help.
-
Attention: Could not load system hive.
Attention: System hive is missing.
Do you have a 64bit system
-
No it's 32
-
OK on the reatogo desktop is a file called OTLPE
- Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
- Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
- When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
- When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
- Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
- OTL should now start.
- Press Run Scan to start the scan.
- When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
- Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system.
- Right click the file and select send to : select the USB drive.
- Confirm that it has copied to the USB drive by selecting it
- You can backup any files that you wish from this OS
- Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.
-
I don't know which drive is infected. I have just been having problems starting windows even in safe mode it won't load past the aswrvrt.sys file. I found this thread and saw it was the same issues and installed the Reatogo program.
-
Oh I have windows Vista not XP
-
The drive to select will be C :)
-
That is which one I figured. It says Target is not windows 2000 or later.
-
Unfortunately the only option now is a reformat. You can back up any data you wish by transferring to a USB using the Reatogo desktop
-
okay, Thank you :)
-
Sorry it was not better news
-
Same problem as others. XP machine. FRST.txt attached. Please help - unable to boot at all, safe mode, or otherwise.
thanks in advance!
-
Are you running a raid system ?
-
I am not. I did 'build' the computer - been running flawlessly since late 2007 when assembled it. Two hard drives and an external and a couple of optical drives.
thank you.
-
By the way...thanks to your CD, I was able to get your OS up and running and grab data off the hard drives simply. Lesson Learned - do backups more frequently. thanks
-
No problem, as you had multiple drives and had raid drivers running I needed to check that first
-
what do you think...any chance of getting my OS up and running?
-
I do not thinks so, I feel you will need to reinstall the system
-
i have the same problem here is the scan from frst
-
==================== Registry (Whitelisted) ==================

The chkdsk fixed the problem thank you
-
Glad to hear that :)
-
Here is my FRST.txt file.
-
Help please. I have a machine down at work that I'd like to try and fix instead of reloading everything. :'(
Thanks a bunch. :)
-
What was being done prior to the non-booting ?
-
thank you for any help on this. same problem(s). can't boot normally and hangs on aswRvrt.sys on safe mode boot. here's the frst.txt file. WinXP 32bit laptop system. thanks again.
-
What was being done prior to the non-booting ?
Not sure. It is one of our secretaries computer. She had gotten hit with malware a few weeks ago and I configured another computer for her to use.
What did you find?
-
Just minor adware is all I could see.. Try this fix it may or may not work
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST as before and press fix
Once done try a reboot
-
essexboy, just wondering if you have had a chance to peek at the frst text that I posted. any help is appreciated.
-
ldog16 could you start your own thread please as with multiple users it can get confusing
-
Dear Essexboy,
I hope you can help. I have the same problem as the starter of this thread (Windows XP hangs on aswRvrt.sys when starting in safe mode) and I've attached the FRST.txt, generated by FRST.exe. What should I do next?
Many thanks for your help!
-
Dear Essexboy,
as many others, I also have the same problem. Please find attached my FRST.txt file, and if you can - do something with it.
Thank you for your trouble.
-
Could you please start your own threads, as each fix will be different and mixing them up could be disastrous
-
Dear Essexboy,
My computer with Win XP won't boot normally and hangs on aswrvrt.sys when booting in safe mode.
When I try to reboot it in safe mode, it showed the following message:
Press ESC to cancel loading SPTD.sys
After I click the ESC key it went on and then reboot again to the mode selection screen.
If start normal reboot, it also return back to reboot again.
Could you try to do something with this information and help?
Thanks a lot.
-
Essex, sorry to bother you, but I'm having the same problem as Richard did a few months ago, namely, the Windows XP computer won't boot either normally or in Safe Mode; it hangs up at aswRvrt.sys.
I've followed the steps you told Richard to do, booting from the CD and running FRST.exe from a flash drive. Attached are the results of that scan. Please advise me on what to do next.
If I recall correctly, the last thing I did was to run CCleaner wiping the free space clean. The next day, it wouldn't restart.
Thanks for the help.
P.S. I see you requested new threads be started for new questions relating to this, but how does one start a new thread; I don't see a place to do this.
-
Could you please start your own threads, as each fix will be different and mixing them up could be disastrous
-
Will start a new thread.
-
Dear Essexboy,
I'm facing the same problem as mentioned before, did what you proposed, and got this FRST.txt.
Unfortunately, I can't tell what happened before this problem occured, since it's my mother's computer, and she doesn't really recall what she did...
Thanks for your help, it's really appreciated!
-
@EDanido I will start a new thread for you
-
Hy, I have the same problem with my system. I've attached FRST.txt to my message. Thanks.
-
@conia
Access the command prompt from the reatogo desktop and type in the following
Chkdsk c: /r
-
@essexboy
Did that. I receive the same message.
-
Do you have the recovery console installed on the computer ? As we may need to do chkdsk from there
-
No, I don't.
-
Do you have the windows CD ? If not do you have a USB drive we could use
-
Yes, I have a windows CD but what's the point?
I can't reinstall, I have data to save.
-
Nope we are not re-installing we are going to use the recovery console to run Chkdsk
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-start-recovery-console-in-windows-xp.navId-323028.html
Insert the CD into the sick computer
Boot and at the prompt "Press any key to boot from CD" press a key
Continue with the initial options until you get the option :
"To use the recovery console press R"
You will then come to a command prompt.. Probably C:\Windows
Type CD.. to take you up to the C:\ prompt
Type Chkdsk c: /r
Allow it to run and reboot normally on completion
-
I know how to do it and I did that already.
I receive the same blue screen over and over.
-
Any idea? @essexboy
-
As it stands the FRST scan indicates a major registry error
The next option would be to try and recover a backup copy, if this fails then we are looking at a repair install
From the recovery console command prompt type the following pressing enter after each line :
CD C:\windows
md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak
delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default
-
Hi!
I've followed the steps and attached FRST.txt. Please fix it ...
Thanks in advance !
-
Hi,
I hope that there is any chance to resolve my problem :-[
-
Hi!
I've followed the steps and attached FRST.txt. Please fix it ...
Thanks in advance !
Could you create your own topic please as this one is getting chaotic
-
Hi what happened prior to the failure to boot...
I did this and after Reatogo runs windows gets past the loading logo and goes into a light blue screen, where the mouse pointer appears and nothing else happens. Does USB stick need to be completely empty with only FRST in it?
-
No, do you get an XP type desktop when running Reatogo
-
When Reatogo runs, and progress bar loads at bottom, I then get a whindows logon logo, which used to hand, but now goes on to another light blue screen but no options, only a mouse pointer. Does it matter at which specific time I input the USB drive?
Thank you for your time.
-
No there is no problem on the timing, if the Reatogo desktop does not load then the problem is slightly bigger

Apologies for that. My thread is here (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=145329.0). Thanks!

I just received the same issue where XP hangs on aswRvrt.sys and then blue screens.
I tried safe mode and last known good but windows will not load. I attached the FRST.txt to this post.
-
I have this same problem and I have downloaded both:
Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop
Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
When I run the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool it states is making a registry backup and then
becomes non responsive. Any help would be appreciated to get this fixed.

Hi All,
I'm trying to repair an old WinXP machine and am experiencing the hanging/ crashing issue as well. Please find attached the FRST log.
Thanks for your help in advance.

+1 on the aswrvrt problem.
I have started my thread here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=147076.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=147076.0)
I have attached my FRST.TXT and I must add that I have already done a chkdsk /r on my main hdd which was completed with a few
repairs.
Restart on safe mode was not again possible.
I would very much appreciate your expertise on this.
Thanks in Advance.

Hi,
I have the same problem (blue screen in normal boot or "aswrvrt.sys"" crash in safe mode).
The issue started after I decided to upgrade the ASUS BIOS.
In order to sort out the problem I did the following:
1. I have taken out the HDD from my laptop and inserted in another one. It worked perfectly. I put it back.
2. I downloaded the ASUS BIOS from ASUS website. (there were 5 versions: 204, 207, 208, 209, 210, 211). I erased the BIOS incrementally from 204 till 211 using the embedded Flash utility (the BIOS versions were on a flash drive). Each time XP crashed in Safe mode at the same line "aswrvrt.sys"
3. I followed your steps :
Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop
Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
Double click OTLPENet.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads :)
Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
Insert the flash drive with FRST on it
Here the steps stumbled: I couldn't get the image you presented. Actually XP went again in the booting sequence.
Please advise !
Thank you
