Title: vista will not boot, stops at aswRvrt.sys
Post by: moosey on July 28, 2013, 03:05:31 PM
Hi ppl, I have a vista laptop from dell, and since yesterday I cannot boot anymore. After starting I get the microsoft windsows loading green bar, after a while I hear a system beep, and then the screen goes black. In safe mode it tries to load windows files, and stops at aswRvrt.sys.
I saw more ppl have this problem, but solutions seem to differ. How can I proceed? Unfortunately I dont have a system restore point  :o
Thanks ffor any help,
Moosey

What operating system is it i.e. windows xp,Vista, 7 or 8
And is it 32 or 64 bit

Hi essexboy, thanks for your reply and help,

I haven't been updating any software, except possibly a windows update. My operating system is Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP1..

Fot the rest i can tell that i had the memory and hard disk checked by the tools you get when you press F8, but no errors found. The standard repair function goes on literally for hours and hours with no results. I cannot get into safe mode becasue it hangs on said .sys file.. So i am a bit at a loss here. Fortunately i had an old puppy linux on a usb stick :)

I can remove Avast or any malware but there is no guarantee this will work as a few systems have been broken by windows updates

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

1.  Rufus (http://rufus.akeo.ie/downloads/rufus_v1.3.2.exe)

For 32bit systems
2.  Windows Vista RC (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/vista32%20rc.iso)
3.  Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/)

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus
 (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/rufus.JPG)
Select the ISO file on the desktop via the ISO icon.

Press Start Burn
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/RufusISO.JPG)
Then copy FRST to the same USB

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer.  First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB
Note: If you are not sure how to do that follow the instructions Here (http://lifehacker.com/5991848/how-to-boot-from-a-cd-or-usb-drive-on-any-pc)

When you reboot you will  see this.
 Click repair my computer
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/W7%20repair.png)

Select your operating system

Select Command prompt
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/W7%20Command.png)

At the command prompt type the following  :

notepad and press Enter
The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open
Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
In the command window type e:\frst.exe and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
The tool will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Hi there is no sign of malware or any broken services/drivers. I will remove Avast however, I do believe that will help I feel it is a windows update problem.  Are you able to use system restore from the boot USB

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same USB as FRST
Run FRST as before and press FIX

On completion try a normal boot

Hi essexboy, i cannot get into the system anymore, so i cannot get to the option you mentioned. When i redo the fixlist it mentions that these services were not found, so that's not getting me back in . When safe booting it now stops at crcdisk.sys. Any ideas, or am i looking at a reinstall?

OK so you did not reinstall Avast ?

As it is now referencing a different file then it appears to be a system problem, could you run FRST scan again please and I will take another look

Hi essez, no i never reinstalled it, i got stuck in the procedure you suggested, at one point: after uninstalling avast through the control panel i needed to reboot in safe mode, but rebooting never succeeded anymore... Attached my latest frst scan, thanks again, much appreciated!

OK reboot the computer and immediately press and hold F8  does this give you the safe mode menu ?
If so select boot normally

If not then then use the USB and repair my computer option, there select startup repair

nice essex, it helped, i am back in for now. I got straigh into the avast uninstaller, and after that i dont see it anymore.

I don't really dare restart the computer now, afraid i might not get back in!

What can i do to see if all is ok?

I do get a message from "intel matrix storage console", stating that s.m.a.r.t. is reporting a hard dsik problem. Maybe that is at the heart of this problem, or could all the tweaking, restarting, cold power offs have caused that?

No that is a timely warning that the hard drive is failing I think that it may have been the initial cause of the problem.   In your place I would heed that warning and replace the hard drive soon

Hi Essex! I've Got the same problem with aswRvrt.sys stopping in safe mode, safe mode with networking and safe mode with command, i've also tried Last know good configuration but it isn't working either, all I've got so far is blank screen with mouse pointer if I use system recovery, i wanted to try your method here but i the link to Windows Vista RC is not working.

I have a windows vista home basic, I haven't turned on my Windows update, but I'm not sure if I have my Avast in Auto update.
anyway, before this, I was watching a movie when everything stops, I do a force reboot and after that windows isn't working normally anymore.

Thanks In Advance!
