Title: Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition
Post by: kalpik on April 28, 2005, 04:05:09 PM
Hi everyone.

Im very sorry to say but i have switched over to Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition v10. I did this because of the following reasons:

1). SAV has MUCH better detection rates.
2). SAV has *good* heuristics.
3). SAV uses less resources than avast.

Please note i am talking about SAV and not Norton. (Norton still sucks!!)

I thought i should tell about the shortcommings in avast so that they are removed. I sincerely loved avast and would really like to switch back if these shortcomings are overcome.

P.S. : I really miss the WebShield feature.

Regards,

Kalpik

Well....

to tell the truth, i am a college student. And our college has a licenced copy. so i just *borrowed* it!

Anyway, i take one of my points back! The one about SAV using less system resources. Its sucking up more than 28 MB!!! (Missed one process ;)) For me, resources are a prime concern! Cuz i have just 192 MB of ram! So i guess im just gonna do a full system scan with SAV and then revert back to Avast!!

But then the detection rate just HAS to be improved. How long are we gonna just keep overlooking all the tests?? And Heuristics are a must!!!

I hope that gives u all the explaination needed   ;) ;) ;D ;D ;D

Im back with Avast!!

Hey!

Guess what??!!
SAV did not detect even a single virus on my PC!! That means Avast did not let any virus into my PC! I'm impressed!

So its bye bye SAV and welcome back Avast!

(This switch lasted not even an hour!!)

Just be sure of a complete (full, no traces left behind...) uninstall of Symantec products in order to have avast! working in your system  ;)

I tried SAV 9.0 on another PC of mine, the real time scanner did not pick up 3 trojans and ISTBAR.

Only a manual scan with Expanded threats enabled found them.

I have been using Avast for nearly a year and it has never let anything get through.

So me likes Avast even more  :P

And the webshield is an excellent feature. /me hugs webshield

I think this way is not a good methodlogy to judge a quality of an AV. Because there's NO AV finds everything, sometimes Avast misses some malware that Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, Kaspersky, AVG, NOD32 find but sometimes it will be vice versa. But when it comes to major malware or ITW malware so every AVs will find it all as soon as possible.

The company I used to work uses several AV products from several vendors, e.g. Fortinet Antivirus Firewall at perimeter, GFI product at mail server (GFI uses several engine such as Kaspersky, BitDefender, Norman) and Trend Micro at file server and desktop. My experience has been that each scanner will occasionally catch malware that one or others miss.

I use and trust Avast but I've always used other scanners for scanning my pc from time to time, sometimes it come up with nothing but sometimes it come up with malware files from browser cache (just the files that get through Avast real-time scanner but my pc is not get infected and I never get infected when using Avast) that Avast misses. One thing I've noticed that Avast always cause false positive from time to time even it has no heuristics.

But above all, Avast runs sweetly and beautifully on my machine with good protection, that's all.

Agree, there isn't a antivirus that can find all the viruses in the universe.  (Since it's always growing)  but theres always gonna be antiviruses better then others and antiviruses that are more unstable in your computer like McAfee, gosh I couldn't stand that thing, I wish I had avast sooner.  >:(
