Title: Avast start up problem
Post by: Tommycat on September 27, 2003, 05:24:13 PM
Sometimes when i start my computer, on-acces doesn't start up correct.
There is then a red symbol in the icon.
Most of the times it starts up fine.

My computer is:
pentium pro 200
96 mb ram
windows 98
Avast! version=4.1.268

Can anyone help me?

Ps: sorry for bad english but i'm from the netherlands. :-[

What happens when you double click the tray icon (when it's crossed out, of course)? Does a windows appear? And what happens when you click "Details...>>" in this window?

When i doubble click i see the normal on-access window but then whitout the pictures of the providers (this is in details mode). When i click start nothing happends.

Post by: Vlk on September 27, 2003, 05:57:32 PM
So there are no providers? Not even one? :o

Check the logs - start the avast! log viewer (accessible by right-clicking the avast tray icon) and see if there's something suspicious - especially in the Error and Warning categories..

Thanks

Hmm, this seems to be a tough problem. I'll try to think off something... Maybe I'll send you a debug version with extended logging features so that we can see why the providers are not being loaded... :-\

Thanks

OK, please try replacing the file ashServ.exe with this one

http://cat.asw.cz/~vlk/ashServ.exe

(first back up the original version, to be sure). The new version should work the same, except that it will create the file c:\_aswServ.log on startup. I'd need you to send me the contents of this file (after starting the new version).

Thanks,
Vlk

Hehe that's typical - as soon as I start to dig further, the problem "disappears". Just like that.

Sometimes I really have the impressions that bugs are scared of me. ;D

Still no problem  :o
Could it be that my ashserve.exe was corrupted?
Title: Re:Avast start up problem

Hi i got an update from avast so i must restart my computer.
The next day on-access didn't start up correct again  :'(
I had removed the log file because then i get a clean log but now when i restart there isn't a log file.
I think that is because the update?

What can i do  ???
Must i replace the ashserve again with the ashserve that you send?

Thx Rob

Post by: Vlk on October 01, 2003, 06:28:13 PM
Yeah, that's quite likely, man, it's got to be the VPS update. That is, the VPS update verified all avast files and found version mismatch in ashServ.exe (that's because you replaced it with the "hand-crafted" version I sent you). So it replaced it with the "right" version.

Please replace it again - and you should be all set.

A new program update will be released early next week. This new version of ashServ.exe (that appearently works even on your machine) will be included in the update.

Ok i will do that.
Thank you very much!

I replaced the file and then started ashserve ande on-access didn't work correct.
Here is the text of the log:
aswServ 000353913 ms: Starting
aswServ 000353964 ms: In INIT XXX
aswServ 000355896 ms: AavmStart ERROR 80046302

aswServ 000356383 ms: WD started
aswServ 000356384 ms: Integrity thread started
aswServ 000356646 ms: Init complete

Maybe this is normal because i started ashserve by myself and not on startup.

There should be some associated info in the avast! Log Viewer (the Error category)
Title: Re:Avast start up problem
Post by: Tommycat on October 03, 2003, 01:20:49 PM
Nothing to see in the avast! log viewer.
But that is maybe because i allready restarted my computer.

That shouldn't really be a problem...

It seems to me that the logging feature does not work correctly under Win9x... :(

And the problem disappers after you reboot the machine, right?
Title: Re:Avast start up problem

Sometimes the problem is still there, but sometimes it disappears  ???
Although the problem occurs less then when i didn't use your ashserve.

It seems to me that the logging feature does not work correctly under Win9x... :(

Vlk, what do you mean this feature do not work properly?
Can you say something about log categories? Why don´t avast save all kind of log events and the user must choose just one (category)?  ::)

Title: Re:Avast start up problem
Post by: Vlk on October 04, 2003, 07:05:32 PM
The key here is the line
aswServ 000041512 ms: AavmStart ERROR 80046302

This particular error code is returned in two possible situations:

- the language library cannot be loaded (not very likely unless you played with the avast files), or
- the avast! antivirus engine could not be initialized. This is more likely the case.

Please download the following file: http://cat.asw.cz/~vlk/Aavm4h.dll and
copy it to the avast directory, just as you did that ashServ.exe. The problem is that the DLL will probably be locked so you'll have to kill lots of processes (at least all avast processes) to gain write access to it (it's most reliable to copy it in DOS, before Windows starts, though).

After reboot, if the problem reappers, please resend me the file c:\_aswServ.log (it should now contain more info).

Thanks
Vlk

The line when on-access worked.

Thanks.

What is the reported version of the VPS file (the virus DB)?

Also, could you actually try to delete the VPS file (<avast4>\data\400.vps) and invoke the iAVS update? I'd like to be sure that the VPS file is not corrupted in any way...

Thanks,
Vlk

Ok i think i've done something wrong. :(
I deleted 400.vps and then try to update.
Vps was allready up to date it said, so i thought that maybe i should restart my computer.
So i did.
Now avast doesn't work at all.
I tried to manually open ashserve but then i get no icon.

No problem. You can download the file here: http://cat.asw.cz/~vlk/400.vps . That's the correct version so you don't have to try the update trick any more...

I'm having a similar startup problem as well. The avast! tray icon shows a red sign over it. If I double-click on it, i get an error message (see attached image):

"avast!: The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error."
"The operation could not be completed."

I had first tried with the Spanish version, now with the English version. I get the same error message with both of them.

The log viewer shows the following entries in the "Error" category:

12.10.2003 20:16:27   NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM   540   AAVM - initialization error: AavmStart: avworkInitialize failed, 0000A413.
12.10.2003 21:36:26   NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM   544   AAVM - initialization error: AavmStart: avworkInitialize failed, 0000A413.

I'm using the latest version (downloaded today), and even registered as home user, and entered the registration code.

I'm running an Windows 2000 Professional (Spanish) on an Athlon with 128 MB of RAM.

Startup and manual scanning both seem to work fine; it's the resident shield that doesn't start.

Need more info?

I suggest a search for RPC error (http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=2;action=search) in avast! foruns.
Lots of foruns have discussed this in the past.
Like Vlk, version 4.1.280 must work ok with them.
Are the RPC service starting automatically with the OS?
What firewall and spyware were installed?

Hum, I *did* search for "rpc error" before I posted; no results were returned.

I did not know RPC was a separate service; I'll check if it is being started as soon as I get back to that computer.

I'm not using any firewall/spyware software (however, ZoneAlarm has been recently uninstalled on that computer).

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll post as soon as I have details.

I don't have an English OS so I cannot find the specific service RPC Locator (I suppose it is the Alocator Remote Procedure Call and manages the data base names RPC)  ::)
I suggest you open the properties of the "normal" RPC service and see if avast! is named as a dependent service (i.e., if avast is listed at the dependent services of RPC).
Maybe another test, try to reinstall ZoneAlarm and see if this correct the error. I have ZA too and everything is working fine with avast.  :'(

Chriz, RPC is Remote Procedure Call.
There are various configurations mentioned at http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm to shutting down and disabling many of Microsoft's services which you may do not need. But
these actions - disabling Windows Services - is quite an advanced task. Avast! requires at least RPC service running... You can cause more conflits doing so. Be smart! Good luck. If you need more help, tell us.

Try to desinstall, boot and install avast again.
If this not work, please see Administrative Tools / Services
and look what is marked to RPC Service. It must be Start Automatically.
Both avast Services must be setted to start automacatilly either...

Btw, RPC is indeed an independent service of NT/XP systems. Just search the word 'RPC' in forums, you´ll get some:
This forum includes ZoneAlarm and RPC discussion (http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1703;start=msg10821#msg10821)

Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?
Did you use in the past?
Do you have a firewall or other security program installed?

Please, search the board for avworkInitialize and see if you get any solution for your problem...
A reinstallation should done but I've tried and nothing...
