Hi all
I deleted my layout.ini file in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch folder have search google for a solution, with little success
Must be looking in the wrong place.
If possible could one of this forums member please supply me with a copy of there Layout.ini file.
I think it can be modified for my computer.
Finally found the answer: Run-: %windir%\system32\Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
Must have Task Scheduler enabled for this to work
-
What is stored into this file? Seems strange while opened in Notepad... ::)
-
If it was in the prefetch folder and you deleted it, I would have thought that wouldn't have had any effect except for taking longer to load?
A google search for layout.ini returns many hits - this is just one of them - http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/sysperf/benchmark.mspx
I haven't even got a prefetch folder but even if I did, I would have thought transferring this file would not relate to your settings.

This works for *.pf files.
But the layout.ini is the only different one there... ??? ::)

Thanks for the replies
I didn't realize I had deleted the layout.ini file (C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch), just noticed that my boot time had increased markedly. I clean out prefetch regularly.
I tried running defrag -: giving me error message and would not run. Upon investigation I discovered that I had deleted layout.ini.
My googling told me that layout.ini could be rebuilt using Start/Run %windir%\system32\Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
I tried this many times without success it wasn't until I came across the fact that Task Scheduler had to
be enable for this to work and bingo one rebuilt layout.ini file
Much much faster boot times and defrag ran without any problems.
Once again thanks all this forum really blitzes

Thanks for letting us know, it could possibly help others with the same problem.
That really is strange that in order for the command to work Task Scheduler has to be enabled, I can't see any reason why task scheduler would have anything to do with it. I have task scheduler disabled as well, got fed up with it continually trying to connect and synchronise my system clock.
I too haven't got a layout.ini file but haven't tripped up when trying to use windows defragment without it. It is however very rare that I use windows defrag, more for the analysis after using RejZors Power Defragmenter - RejZors - eXcessive-software.tk Site (http://www.excessive-software.tk/). I have seen occasion when the power defragmenter had done the job in about the same time it took windows defrag to analyse a drive.

I'm a little confused, David. Doesn't scheduling a boot-time scan use Task Scheduler for setting up a one-time task? Or is that handled somewhere else and therefore, like you, I can safely ditch the Task Scheduler?
-
No, a change is made to one of the boot.ini files (which is why it will only work for NT based OS) that dictates what to do on the next boot.
I don't know what file is edited but Task Scheduler is not used as that requires windows to be running in order to work.

Yes DavidR I to found it strange that Task Scheduler had to be enabled for the Start/run/ + Command added
to work I ran and ran the %windir%\system32\Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks command and
couldn't work out why it would not rebuild the layout.ini file until I can across mention of the fact that TS had
to be enabled just goes to show you learn something new every day
I should look much closer have been using two of RejZors programs for quit a while now have used Power
Defragmenter for months now without realizing and FF AdBlock Extension since it was released Pretty clever
Cookie is RejZors
Fantastic Tools
Da!Dh! Look closer I see RejZor designs the interfaces still brilliant
