Title: Malware not detected
Post by: jerryd on August 19, 2013, 04:51:00 AM
Avast forum,

 Avast Internet Security 8.0.1489

I have gotten Nav-Links one very annoying malware.  I ran a Full
System Scan but Avast didn't find or remove it.  How can I get
 Avast to remove this?

Navlinks is a browser plugin adware and redirector. Avast can't deal with it alone. Which is kinda weird, don't you think? My opinion of a good AV is one which works by itself, detecting bad software. Not one which depends of three or four softwares to aid it in working. Kinda like a janitor who need "cleaning assistants" for a 2 store building.

This is the best tutorial I've found to remove it: http://www.rescuemybrowser.com/navlinks-virus-removal (http://www.rescuemybrowser.com/navlinks-virus-removal).

Good luck!

It may be detected if PUP scan is turned on.....it is default off
PUP = not a virus / Possible Unwanted Program

Perhaps PUP detection should be on by default ?

Avast forum,
 Windows XP

 Thanks for the repiles.
I knew I had this virus because everytime my mouse arrow hovered over
a double underlined word the Nav-Links popup came up.

 I had visited http://www.rescuemybrowser.com/navlinks-virus-removal
and tried everything it recommended but nothing worked.

I downloaded AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes but all it did was totally
lockup my laptop.  It may have been running a scan but I couldn't
even open the Task Manager.  I powered down and started in "safe"
mode and ran a "quick scan" which detected 3 PUP files which I
had it remove.  When I rebooted not in "safe" mode the laptop was
locked up again.  I restarted in "safe" mode and removed
AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes.  Rebooted again not in "safe" mode
and Nav-Link seems to be gone.   Very strange.

well the only place where PUP scan is default on is in boot scan

you could have run AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes from safe mode....

there may be additional files that need to be removed, if you want a removal expert to check this, go to the same guide i gave you, scroll down to OTL and attach the diagnostic log.....
and this log must be attached, not copy and paste
