Title: Avast 4 stops IE ^ from working????
Post by: pcgp on October 01, 2003, 02:23:41 PM
Hi Guys

I have just installed the trial Avast 4, and the installation went well after I uninstall Norton 2003.

The problem I now have is that IE 6 comes up with the error report box (were it wants to send a report to Microsoft) and closes IE 6 down the same happens with anything that uses the IE 6 interface.

I want to get Avast working with my system I mean it found a SWEN worm that Norton missed.

O/S is XP PRO

Firewall : KERIO

thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

did you delete Swen with avast or manually ?
Where exactly was the infected file found (full path and filename) ?

Can you open any other programs/EXE-files ?

You might want to look here for info & help:

Also, do you have avast Home or Pro?
And what version of Kerio Personal Firewall?

If you install Norton, try to see if you have corrected the registry keys for DOS in the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers

Do you see any Symantec driver listed here?
Is the avast! driver listed? If not, you are not protected  :'(
If you don´t believe me, try eicar test from DOS (cmd window).  ;D

You´re happy without Symantec driver listed there  ;D
The eicar test and lots of useful links could be found at http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=834;start=new

Specifically information about eicar test could be found at http://www.eicar.org
It is a test file for antivirus (not a real virus).  ;D
