Title: Safezone issue PLEASE HELP/RESPOND!!!!!
Post by: kevbeck on September 26, 2013, 07:45:44 PM
whenever i access safezone and visit certain webpages such as my email and log in, i receive "the following pages have become unresponsive" There is a button to kill pages. Also I receive a pop-up that is titled "Plug-in Unresponsive : The following plugin is unresponsive: UNKNOWN would you like to stop it?

I am forced to revert back to my OS ans terminate all sandboxed processes then go back into safezone mode and access my email again.

This happens every time i try to log in. I thought the safezone browser didnt have any plug-ins and none show when i check the settings.

I am a paid subscriber for avast and i tried calling tech support and they tried to get me to purchase avast total support to remote in my sys and pay $170. The tech guy was trying to say maybe i was infected. I am 110% sure i am not infected as avast boot-time/scans and MBAM and kaspersky free scans have found no trace of infection. However boot time scan did find corrupted files

This is an avast program issue and i would like some assistance with this as i have paid to use this product. Ive already tried to uninstall-Reinstall and disk cleanup.... No help...
CAN SOME PLEASE PROVIDE SOME TROUBLE SHOOTING TIPS. otherwise i will have to go back to another av product and i really dont want to do that but the lack of support here is putting a bad taste in my mouth

Hi
As far as the tech support incident, we have had numerous complaints of 'pressure tactics' to sell supposed support packages/services. We recommend using the forum for avast issues. The support is effective and free.
I personally can't offer any "troubleshooting tip" as I have not experienced the issues you have described.
However, there will be someone with more experience with the SafeZone Module. Providing the following info could help in resolving your issue.
What OS are you using.
What version of Avast
Security profile/programs.

Good luck. 8)

Do you have Kaspersky antivirus and avast both installed?

hi kevbeck,

As avast! [SafeZone] sandbox runs with Chrome by default, your descriptions of unresponsiveness does sound as if a plug-in is hanging, even tho avast! sandbox does not have any plug-ins installed by default.

I'm assuming (you've yet to say) you're running at least version 8.0.1483?  There are some settings within the sandbox that you can use to clean and clear the sandbox out if you've not done so already:  Avast! GUI>Security>Tools>Settings>Web Browsers>Maintenance.  For automatic deletion on close, clear the box.  Also, is this MBAM Pro?

If that does not give the results you need, then see the second .jpeg below:

(Note:  This will completely reset the Safe Zone back to default settings only.  Use only as a last resort until all other options are looked at.)

We'll work with you until this is fixed.

[EDIT:]  Fixed typo.

No, i only have AIS as my AV program and i run MBAM alongside as well. After the avast tech told me i might be infected, even though i knew i wasnt, i downloaded a stand alone security scanner from kaspersky to re-check my sys, all was well and there was no infections found just as i thought. It was only a malware remover/detector not a av prog. But the issue explained above has been persistent since 4+ months ago . As you can tell i only usually post when i have issues, and i never really seem to get a real fix for them.  Does having avast and windows firewall running concurrently cause issues?

Thanks, i will try these steps and see how it goes the next couple of days and report back. And yes it is AIS and MBAM pro. Also im not sure if i have reported this issue before but when i browse the internet i have it selected to always open sandboxed, 80% of the time my audio will not work. i notice that sometimes if i open the browser without it being sandboxed, audio will work. This is sporadic to but have had this issue about .4 months + . I also noticed that " c:\windows\SysWOW64\ctfmon.exe is always sandboxed automatically when my sys is running. I dont know how to clear that. Ive made sure all software and drivers are updated on my system but that process remains sandboxed automatically.. any suggestions?

? - Under the sandbox > settings > web browser menu, If i have the Exclusion "all settings and components" checked, does that mean everything will be virtualized by default ? Or does it mean the settings and components will not be virtualized when i have a sandboxed browser open? I had this unchecked, but i decided to check the box.

Well, as a rule, I never change things from default settings, with very few exceptions .

So, the question you have is, are the settings in the Web Browser section default?  Yes.  Never touched them.  You want your browser to run as a virtual application in a virtual environment separate from the real system you run on.  That way, stuff in the virtual never sees the real system and stays in the virtual system until you delete it from the virtual environment.  Hence the Maintenance section may apply for you here.

My concern/ question was, in the exclusions section if I checked the " all settings and components" box does that mean that avast will put extensions and all other browser extensions virtualized when I run my browser sandboxed? By default, the box was unchecked and I noticed with it being unchecked my browser extensions were not virtualized when running it sandboxed.  Is this correct?

Reason for ticking all boxes in the EXCLUSIONS section in the first .jpeg is to protect the web browser from attack and unwanted changes to the browser being used.

For example, a "script not responding" error box will pop up from time to time (likely referring to Flash plugin) but as the process is being run virtualized, no damage or changes to it can occur in the real system.  Simply clicking "Stop script" is enough to prevent a change and then, when I close the session, I check to make sure that all data in sandbox is actually deleted.  Sometimes it's not, so I clear it then.

Seems you are running a part of your browser not virtualized by not having the boxes ticked?  If so, there is a workaround.  Workaround for saving bookmarks, favorites, or anything else, etc., is to, for example, notepad the url, close and terminate the Safe Zone Browser session, and open the actual real browser you want to save your bookmark in from the notepad.  Close the real browser and resume Safe Zone.  (Security outweighs convenience.)

Thanks for the response. To make sure I understand I will need a simple answer.  I want my entire internet browsing sessions to be sandboxed so does this mean I need to have the options under the exclusion section ( all settings and component, bookmarks, cookies, history) Checked or Unchecked ?

I had the exact same problems as you, with the audio and the flash player, then avast just shut off completely. Makes me want to get a different Security program.

I think it is the Virtualisation process, but not sure how to fix it. Let me know if you work it out.

If you want the entire session to be virtualized (completely sandboxed) then one should check the general box that includes all options:  "All settings and components" under exclusions.  If a box is not ticked, then that option will be excluded from virtualization.

For example, if you wish to save any bookmarks in a session, you then would leave that option unticked.  Personally, I use notepad and sometimes take some time to get around to actually putting it into the real browser; sort of a test to see whether I really need it or not.

Have no problem running off a saved url notepad file; use that all the time.

You'll note that the general exclusion setting also includes extensions and add-ons, something you may have an issue with in Safe Zone sessions.  Virtualization will make any such problems temporary inasmuch they will end when the sandbox is cleared out (emptied) at close of session.  It won't prevent changes to these things within the sandbox, but as long as changes are locked inside the sandbox (don't spill out) and cannot get into the real system, you have the protection you need right there.  Some, not all, malware looks to see if it is running in a sandbox, and if it detects it is in a sandbox, it will not run at all.  This is one of the many techniques used to avoid detection by an antivirus engineer looking for such when running a suspected malware sample sent to them.

Thanks for the reply. I kept all boxes checked but noticed that when i am in safezone, i am unable to save files to an external drive now that these changes are made. But i guess i can deal with it.

Now to deal with another constant problem that i mentioned before =   " c:\windows\SysWOW64\ctfmon.exe is always sandboxed automatically when my sys is running. I dont know how to clear that. Ive made sure all software and drivers are updated on my system but that process remains sandboxed automatically.. "

avast is always putting this in the sandbox. I believe this is a legit prog on my computer so im confused as to why it would be sandboxed. How do stop this from happening?

Glad to help.

Behavior you now see is to be expected now that you've set the main tick box to run all elements of your browser to be virtualized.

Re the second issue, ("c:\windows\SysWOW64\ctfmon.exe is always sandboxed automatically when my sys is running") you've to check to see if this file is clean or not first.  Avast! sandboxing is done on the premise that a file, when scanned, is not well-known, or is not the correct actual file it should be.  Hence, under this scenario, sandboxing is actually protecting you from harm.

One of the criteria used is "Reputation Services".

ctfmon.exe is used by:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599) but there are known trojans masquerading as ctfmon.exe also.  http://systemexplorer.net/file-database/file/ctfmon-exe (http://systemexplorer.net/file-database/file/ctfmon-exe) as an example.

For now, we'll stop here until you've submitted your file to virus total dot com and pasted the resulting url of the scan in your next reply.  Should there be more than, say, two detections, then would be best to have a certified malware expert have a look at your system, as I am not qualified to go any further than that.  Motto here is 'do no harm to a victim's system' and I certainly do not wish to cause harm here.

https://www.virustotal.com/ (https://www.virustotal.com/)
http://r.virscan.org/ (http://r.virscan.org/)

Hopefully you do not fall into this category.  And we then will be able to troubleshoot your issues further without harm.

How do I locate he file to submit to virus total? I'm hoping troubleshooting this issue will fix the sound to work when I run my browsers sandboxed as that is my focus. If I'm looking at YouTube videos for an example and my browser is sandboxed, the sound will not work. I have to close and reopen regularly. I have no plugins or 3rd party extensions. I run stock browsers and have tried uninstalling reinstalling

Thanks, Asyn, for the help so far.

@ kevbeck,

Could you copy/paste the resubmitted vt scan in your next reply?

I have no way of knowing if the vt scan I found was your vt report as the original url was not pasted in your prior reply, so I submitted a new fresh scan from my Win 7 system; this resulted in the prior scan being lost at the moment.  I am sure that report can be recovered, but have not yet been successful in doing so.

Even tho the scan came out clean, there was a suspicious element in that the file submitted performed two operations while analyzed it maybe should not have:  xcopy, and another operation I forgot to write down.

What now is there @ vt is the most recent analysis; it is the same file but it is submitted from my Win 7 system.  It did not show these two operations, or any, occurring at all.

So, the current report is different from yours, this is assuming you were the last one to submit that file for analysis.

You may need to resubmit your file for analysis as I am not able to recover the prior report from here.

Sorry about that, but this is one of the reasons why I do not propose running certain programs that can possibly damage an user's system and running subsequent fixes based on the logs from them.  Do not wish to cause harm here.

I do think the two operations discovered may well be suspicious if the the prior report was submitted by you, especially if. as you say, avast! is sandboxing your ctfmon.exe file every time it runs.

We need to find out why that is happening.

Awaiting your reply with the resubmitted pasted vt url link.

[EDIT:]  Never mind, I think I've found it using Google:  https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/6bb5f3a7147660db416b838893c7d0734872ada9f7db68b1d019043a1cb89397/analysis/ (https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/6bb5f3a7147660db416b838893c7d0734872ada9f7db68b1d019043a1cb89397/analysis/)   ;D   Look into the 'Relationships' Tab to see what is there under CarbonBlack.

@ mchain, My apologies for leaving out the url. Thanks for finding it. That is mine. I was assuming since there was a 0% detection ration the file was clean. But im guessing VT is hinting the file is suspicious. Im still not leaning toward thinking my system is infected since running mbam finds nothing. It would make more since for my system to have corrupted files relating to my issues. Can you please direct me to taking the next steps to solving the issues noted below?

@asyn, The issues im having are 1. my ctfmon.exe file is always sandboxed and im concerned as to why 2. When running my browser sandboxed, my audio/sound does not work. 3. My pc has a slow abnormal startup/lag . 4. I was receiving a plugin crash notification while using safezone but after following mchains instructions noted earlier in this post, it seemed to have solved the issue for now. thnx

Ive recently tried ms fixit to see if that solved it but it didnt work.

Not to sound bombastic, but i am certain avast plays a role in these issues and im looking to fix them. I am willing to follow any help i can get.

1. Download avast! Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

Better now..?

I'm with Asyn.  We need to rule out any possible issues with avast! so the above actions in his second post following I concur with.  I've noted a certain reticence with some of your replies [possibly due to a certainty that avast! is to blame for your issue(s)] in that info asked for is not directly answered in your next post, but, really, without that info, we're left to guess as we're not in front of your system.

Maybe it is privacy issues you're concerned with, hard to tell from here.  We're both here to help out just so you know.

You could try running the removal tool for symantec once again as they tend to get updated from time to time once again:  http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB11#artTitle (http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB11#artTitle)

Reboot after running this tool.  Whether you run the tool before or after a clean install of avast! should not matter that much; point is to remove any left over drivers from the OEM installation as it came with your system when new.

Can someone explain to me why these folders are still there after i uninstalled via control panel and also i used the uninstall utility on the sandbox folder but it did not delete/remove. I would like to re-install but because these folders have temp files in them i am assuming this will preserve or cause the same issues i noted in the beginning/middle of this post.... very frustrating.

**My Issue is noted below my rant.

I feel that my plea for assistance is becoming a rant and a pathetic journey. I waited 30+ minutes to reach avast customer service by phone 1866-951-7679 to get assistance with uninstalling avast properly only to be told that the fact that there are files/folders left over after uninstalling  AIS,  there is a problem with my OS and they want me to pay $170 for total support to speak to a Microsoft certified tech to help me. I assumed there would be no cost support by phone to assist with uninstalling/reinstalling the software i paid for since it is however causing issues. I should have known avast would work to blame and divide problems on my system and want me to pay $170 to be told how to fully uninstall avast and left over folders/files. Have i considered that my system might be the culprit ? Yes. But seeing that the only issues are with avast and knowing that i am very meticulous on how how use my system, it is reasonable to say the issue is not my system. The customer support spectrum and responsibilities of the agents needs to increase without requiring users to pay a leg for help. I mean honestly, i need help uninstalling and re-installing the product and if that requires extra tools then help me do it for free since i paid for 2 years for this service and it does not work properly. If i have a problem with my phone, i call my provider and they help me troubleshoot and do not charge me an arm and a leg, if i have issues with satellite, they help me troubleshoot at no cost because i have a paid subscription.  I don't care what anyone's opinion about this is because the truth is, this is no way to treat a customer.  Yes its nice that i can get free help on the forums but i have a life outside using my computer, i cant just hop on and type away and wait for responses whenever i want. I am very disappointed on the lack of true support from agents by phone. Vincent Steckler, Do something about that!! Yes the marketing and appearance of avast is nice now concentrate on the customer service side of the business because it needs improvement.

**I uninstalled avast through control panel and it left behind folders that have related files. I need to reinstall avast on my system so i can exhaust my subscription that i paid for.  I do not want to reinstall avast with still having these files as it will most likely cause the same issues i have been having.

1. is it safe to just delete the left over folders ? Will that clear all traces of avast on my system.

2. would someone be so kind as to do instruct me how to clear all traces of avast before i re install.

Thanks for helping through this asyn.  I ran the uninstall utility last night, I left the path blank since I installed to the default location. I will delete the folders when I retun home and then reinstall . Hopefully this will clear the issues I'm having. I will also be reinstalling my browsers. If the problem persists then I will post in new thread.

3 issues : I just reinstalled AIS 2014 after a clean uninstall using the utility removal instructions

1. After i deleted remaining avast folders after uninstalling, i noticed a folder is recreated in different locations, example in my memory card and when i inserted my flash drive. This is puzzling. The folder is titled "avast! sandbox"it has two separate folders with files... WHY is this happening ?
2. After installing AIS 2014 , all shields are turned off and i cannot turn it on. It says i have 0 days for my subscription
3. Avast will not accept my license file , when inserting, i get " Unable to insert the license file. The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error.

hahahaha i need to laugh off mu frustration !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Repair avast!:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

I want to add that yesterday after uninstalling avast from my system it worked flawlessly.  I got no browser crashes and good boot up time and no issues what so ever. I repaired as u said and restated.  Now my system does not respond.I am unable to log in my system. On the log on screen nothing has a reaction. My system freezes. I've had to hold down the power button twice to reboot the system and it does the same thing. I was just using my pc before installing avast ot was working perfect. I am not making this up......What do I do now 1? 1? 1?? 1? 1?

1. Boot into safe mode and uninstall avast!

2. Let's have a look at your system. Run OTL and attach your log.

I dont know what to do I dont think u can help any further.  I think I'm done. I don't know who else would put up with anymore of this mess for lack of a better word. I don't know why I have. Now my system is completely useless.

Hi there, I had this as an intermittent problem during the beta.  First do a system restore to a time prior to the malfunction.  You will need the windows cd to do this.  You will find that the keyboard and mouse will work within the BIOS area (to set the boot cd option) and when the cd is being used.  You need to select repair my computer option to get to system restore

If I don't have a windows cd, where can I get one.? And once I acquire one do u mean that when the computer boots up, hit f8/f5 and select cd boot up option? Will avast rescue disc work for this?

I will PM a link for the relevant windows recovery console which will do the same function.  I cannot put the link in public as my daily usage in dropbox goes off the scale and I get suspended for a day :)

Oops what windows do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit

CALL THE CAVALRY !!! im tired of working with this. The same issue is happening. I just re-installed AIS 2014 after doing system restoreafter installing the first time.
******************2. After installing AIS 2014 , all shields are turned off and i cannot turn it on. It says i have 0 days for my subscription
3. Avast will not accept my license file , when inserting, i get " Unable to insert the license file. The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error.************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
I already have a purchased license so i select the option to insert the license before installing. There is also another option to use the 30-day free trial and then insert license after the 30 days expire. I have not tried that option. Now im going to restart my computer to see if that fixes the issue. This is when my computer froze after every boot up. Im assuming the same thing is going to happen. I really need my pc to work properly and need to use it today i would like to have everything up and running ASAP... Any suggestions on how to get this great software to run properly ?

After the restore I should have said run aswclear as Avast does not play well with system restore.  My apologies

Download Uninstall Utility (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe) to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe)
Avast Pro (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe)
Avast Internet Security (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe)
Avast Premier (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe)
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel

Ive tried the above method twice already. Ive started fesh - a quick recap of the actions ive take below and where i currently stand
This was after using the Uninstall utility and reinstalling after = Inserting my license does not work and avast has all shiels turned off and selecting any option in the UI yields the same RPC error noted earlier in this post. ive attempted to uninstall but i get "there was an error during product installation . i was forced to restore the system to a point where i did not have avast installed. Now, every time i install avast, whether its the AIS, FREE, version i having having a consistent issue = All shields are turned off and my license does not insert. If i try to repair and restart, my sys freezes and i am forced to do a system restore. If i try to install l i get an error message noted above. This is a never ending loop. ive tried to reinstall 3 times already after restoring to a pont after i used the uninstall utility. Now i currently do not have avast installed and my computer is working flawlessly. Please tell me how to  get avast working on my system again. The above method does not work. I wait for a response

Even though you restored to a time before Avast was installed it will only replace the system files, it may well leave some other drivers/files on the system albeit inoperative
So for safeties sake run AswClear before installing Avast (use the V9 one)

I used the utility again and uninstalled avast. I already tried this, now if i try to download and install again, i will have the same issues noted above and i will have to do a system restore after installing again because after subsequenlty restarting my computer after the installation it will freeze. Mind you the system does not freeze now..

Before you start could you go to control panel > device manager and see if any of your network connectors have a yellow triangle

Yes one does : Network adapters = avast! Firewall NDIS Filter Miniport . under properties it says = Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

** Do i delete this since avast was and still is uninstalled on my system ??????????????

i assume my issue of not being able to reinstall is related to some of the other posts with similar issues.

That is the problem I experienced with the RC however it disappeared with the final release

I was never able to figure out why especially as I was the only one reporting the problem

After the uninstall of Avast and a reboot the yellow triangles should disappear http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=135763.0

So I've attempted multiple times to reinstall and uninstall and avast always has all shields turned off and firewall and safezone continue to not work. How do I fix this.  Is there a way to completely remove all traces of avast including registry as if avast never existed on my system. ?

Try Rejzors small tool, this clears all of it.  http://my.opera.com/rejzor/blog/2013/02/01/avast-cleanup-tool

The programme is safe and can be trusted
