What is your OS?
What error messages (exact or screen print) are you getting?

Ensure that your firewall allows ashMaiSv.exe, what is your firewall?

Also visit the User's FAQ (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=4818.0) thread, it will give you a lot of useful advice.

What does the TrueLaunchBar do, I haven't heard of it?

I use MailWasher Pro and I exclude it from the email scanning in the avast4.ini file.

This is a mail settings problem or modem related

http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/email/oe_errors_0x800ccc0f.html

Your signature shows that you also have AVG installed not recommended to tun 2 AV programs
Title: Re: Mail scanner blocks ALL mail
Post by: Teulk on May 19, 2005, 04:38:31 PM
Ahhhh-no---still the same--regardless of the provider..
As for the AVG---both have been running harmoniously for a couple months now--do you suggest I kill one off??
And whether one or both are running, I still have the same problem.
Title: Re: Mail scanner blocks ALL mail
Post by: TedNelly on May 19, 2005, 04:51:42 PM

Both have resident shields running which could cause conflicts it is up-to you however I personally

have had very bad experience running 2 AV programs in tandem The general consensus is one

and only one AV Avast is the most configurable AV program I have ever used and I have tried them

All!!

I see DavidR has picked up on this thread now your dealing with a very knowledgable forum member

OK--I used the ashpopwiz--LOL--and it told me that my maill was laready being protected--
Unfortunately the Mail Protection Wizard has nothing to do with this problem.

Ensure that your firewall allows ashMaiSv.exe (if running in task manager), what is your firewall?

Can you confirm your email program, and which avast providers you have running relating to email scanning?

You don't need the Outlook/Exchange provider/plug-in running unless you have either the MS Outlook or MS Exchange email client. Although it is unlikely, having the Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange providers running may cause conflict.

You only need providers running if you have a need for them IM if you use internet messaging. Unnecessary providers can be terminated, or removed using add remove programs, selset avast antivirus, remove/change, from the new window select change, in the new window you can untick the providers you don't need.

Sent myself an email as you suggested--went out, but never came back in--recieved that is.
Sorry for the duplication of posts--just a bit over-enthusiastic about solving this---

Also--terminated the providers you mentioned, as I do not use them---thx for that anyway!!
Still no change though:)

Well this at least the outbound connection is working, was web shied enabled when you did this? - if so this confirms that web shield is also working.
Do you mean you got a connection error (if so what) or something else?

If web shield wasn't disabled for the test email disable it and resend.

Have you checked your server POP3 settings in OE (tools, accounts, select account, properties) are correct, pop3.ispdomain.com, etc?

Disabled the web shield for the test--but nothing came in

this is the error message from the server

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'pop.broadband.rogers.com', Server: 'pop.mtmc.phub.net.cable.rogers.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Same one I always get when the provider--internetmail--is running.

As for the internet settings--they are the same as they ahve always been---had them checked yesterday with my provider just to be sure..

05/19/05 11:23:32 00000834:   POP Closing connection due to MaxConnections

Click on 'Settings' in my signature and increase the MaxConnections value of avast4.ini file [MailScanner] section.
Probably you'll need to 'add' this line to your ini file.
Can you see if it helps?

About conflicts, avast! is compatible with other non-resident scanners: BitDefender free, Antivir (without resident), ClamAV.
Even in some cases, to experienced users, to AVG resident (email resident specially).

this was in the log aswmaiSv

No. Only it must be inside of the same section. In this case, [MailScanner].

Did you check for smtp authentication into your email account settings? Maybe if you do so you can send mail.
By the way, without avast, can you receive and send mail?

OK--that could be part of it--I never put it in the right place--shall re-try that..
As for authentication--everything is a go there--called my provider and went through all the settings just to make sure.
Another Q--in another thread, there was talk of changing the ODBC line to XML--should I try this as well??
And to answer YOUR Q--yes--if avast is off-everything works hunky dory...

but here is the log of my last attempt---failure that it was--

Teulk, can you post your [MailScanner] section of avast4.ini file here?

Maybe you can add the following line to the [MailScanner] section of <avast>\data\avast4.ini:

Log=20

Then generate some traffic, simulate the problem (i.e. force the avast mail scanner to time out by sending an email with attachment) and then post here the contents of the file <avast>\data\log\aswMaiSv.log too.

OK--tried that as well--no dice and you should see the size of the log created---afraid to post it hee--might be a couple of pages long!!
Yikes!!

My error--164 pages long--copied it to word just to see it!!
OUCH!!

I also went back to the post regarding ini files--and compared them to what mine are set up as--there are differences--very minor--subtle at best--but would they be the cause of this??
And why would they be different when this is a fresh install of avast?? I have removed any changes I made to the file already, but the ones that are different I never touched..

Given the continued "Max Connections" closure reason and the length of the ashMaiSv log, may it not be that a looping condition is being encountered?

If so it would suggest some interaction with other software installed on the system.

I'm wondering about your TrueLaunchBar application ... do use use the email monitoring plugin?

The Launch Bar must be from the originator of this thread--I for one have no such toolbar..

And as an aside..

I uninstalled avast--AGAIN--and re-installed, only this time I installed the beta--4.6.663--and, you'll never guess--everything works just fine..
Emails in and out, providers left and right--twirling blue ball going like whirling dervish..
I will keep checking this thread out for possible solutions to the earlier problem.
To all those who got involved in my little nightmare--thanks for all the help/suggestions/advice..was fun getting to know my PC a little better--although, I'm still FAR  from where I would like to be...here's to the continued progress of the avast product---cheers--be back later, I'm sure!!

Where angels fear to tread ....

I still suspect that you have a looping condition.

I know that the full log you produced on your last attempt was pretty large (provoking my suspicion), but if we could see part of it (or if you can be persuaded to recreate it) just before the POP closing due to max connections it might give a clue to the problem or at least kill my theory.

I have spent more than a few minutes calculating the time differences between South Australia and California ... and I am now fairly certain that this post does not show up for me (any Avast team member - what's up with replication?).

However, I assume that the quote by P3t3rb0nn is accurate.

If Teulk is indeed wilfully ignoring the advice given not to run two antivirus services in tandem then further time attempting to provide support in this thread or reading its content is wasted.

alanrf indeed my observations are correct Teulk has required help on this topic for a few

days now. Yourself, DavidR, numerous other members including myself have offered assistance

on this subject. DavidR infact guided Teulk to keep the topic under one heading as multiple

posts dealing basically with the same topic where causing confusion. If I am incorrect I humbly

apologies however according to the posted dates Teulk is persisting with 2 AV's

I just had the same problem when I switched my notebook from AVG to Avast.  Could not get POP mail but could get IMAP.  I had shutdown the AVG Control Center but guess the email scanner was still active.  I restarted the AVG Control Center and then exited and then everything started working.  I have both on my main PC with no problems.  But somehow the AVG email scanner continued to run even tho I had rebooted many times.

Hope this helps.  :)

In fact, AVG email scanner is a different process than the Control Center.
You should disable the email scanner into the Control Center and check if a startup item remains for the email scanner, removing it.
Note, last version of AVG email scanners is not fully compatible with avast email scanner as far I could test...  :P

I humbly apologize for being away from this thread for over a week--or more--but, well, lets just say it was a personal crisis, shall we??
To continue-if I can, I have disabled AVG during my absence, and the problem still persists.
I tried to find more info in the FAQ, but it all reads the same to me..any other pertinent threads have been looked at--as many as I could handle since my return, anyway--and I am still having the same deal.
Any other ideas, gents?? I will be hanging about for at least the next 2 days--then after that, I'm afraid I'll be off again for a bit---sorry for any inconvenience--I realize that it is imppossible to help someone who is not here at all times, or available for recommendations put out by the techs--and I'm sure they are all SUPER at what they do--who support this forum...sounds like a little smooching of the butt, I am sure, but I just want it known that I appreciated the help that I have recieved so far, and would consider myself lucky to keep on getting it after dropping the ball there for a week or so...

As far I could test, you should uninstall AVG to 'remove' email scanner. Disabling is not enough.
Note, I've used AVG email scanner + avast since two weeks ago. Problems appear after an AVG update.
I tried all possible solutions and only uninstalling AVG give me peace  :)

OK--shall do a clean install of everything BUT AVG--and see what the outcome is--shall return later with the results...
Thanks for the continued advice...
