A different stream and consolidation would be my guess

What is your number? Is it higher than mine? :)

Yours is correct. V9 is using a different VPS setup than v8. Alot of older MS-DOS malware have been removed ( useless ) IIRC and the VPS has become more intelligent.

So is this Bulk Virus Definitions Update file: http://www.avast.com/download-update
... NOT for use with avast 2014?
I checked and its download size is 103.9 Meg.
The one that I have in my Flash Drive from 10-06-2013 is 103 Meg.

Is a separate, different, smaller Bulk Virus Definitions Update file supposed to be used with avast 2014?
Cuz I'll need whatever Bulk Virus Definitions Update file goes with avast 2014 when I upgrade to it on Friday.

It depends if the def file has been updated for 2014.. I'm sorry. I don't know if it has yet. However, looking as the website has been updated, it might have been done.

While I could be wrong, I would think that logically, if avast 2014 is being touted as working with a smaller VPS ... if the Bulk Virus Definitions Update file in that link was already updated and compatible with avast 2014, it would be significantly smaller than the 103.9 Meg that I saw that the current download is.

v2014 is on a different server than previous versions.
v2014 has better technology than any previous avast versions thus the need for larger vps updates is vastly negated.  :)

So do you have any idea what this clandestine link to the avast 2014 Bulk Virus Definitions is?

That's definition updates for Avast 5, 6, 7 & 8.
As Avast 2014 (9.0) was recently released, they didn't update that page with definitions for the actual version.
