Monitoring has nothing to do with the update popups, if you stop one of the shields or functions, the monitoring function will tell you that it is disabled. It isn't disabling or enabling a function, it is just monitoring functions.

All I keep getting is some nonsense popup about facebook settings instead of showing me that the definition was updated... 3 days now, same message. I dont even use FB nor would I ever so what do I care... lol.
But seriously, shouldn't this show me the definition version that was just downloaded like the last versioin of avast?

This is the problem which has been reported in several topics, the auto update notification is screwed up.
Depending on your OS (not sure if this includes Vista), win7 and up I believe, hover the mouse over the avast tray icon and it will tell you what virus definitions version you have.
