Title: avast! Online Security vs Adblock in Chrome
Post by: stadi on October 19, 2013, 02:15:17 PM
Hi,

the latest avast! Online Security plugin (9.0.2005.45) is incomaptible with the Adblock plugin (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/adblock/gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom)

this is the em: "Warning:
This extension failed to redirect a network request to data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAEAAAABCAYAAAAfFcSJAAAACklEQVR4nGMAAQAABQABDQottAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg== because another extension (avast! Online Security) redirected it to data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAEAAAABCAYAAAAfFcSJAAAAFElEQVR4XgXAAQ0AAABAMP1L30IDCPwC/o5WcS4AAAAASUVORK5CYII=."

The em appears in the Chrome extensions page under Adblock

Something else: I'm not sure it's a good idea to enable "block social networks" by default. Some non-IT people might have a difficulty figuring out why a lot of things do not work as they used to be and how to disable it. (from now on I will disable the browser plugins for people I install Avast)

I'm getting the same error here. Somebody posted this issue on AdBlock support forum : http://support.getadblock.com/discussions/questions/107-avast-on-line-security (http://support.getadblock.com/discussions/questions/107-avast-on-line-security) . Here is the support staff answer :

"Hi and sorry for the late reply! Your best bet is to report this to Avast and ask them to "change the data: image used for PNG replacement to match AdBlock's," and include the error message you showed us.

AdBlock and other extensions have agreed to use that specific PNG data: image to stop this error from happening, so Avast can do the same to get the error to go away.

Hope this helps!
Michael"

Just added the following line to AdBlock's personalised filters and avast now works like a charm.

Where exactly did you input this line? I would like to give it a try.

Hi,

this a problem, because both our plugin and AdBlock are filtering and blocking requests. We block trackers and AdBlock blocks ads. However only one extension can use this feature in Chrome, the other is blocked. (Who will take preference is on solely on Chrome). There is very little we can do to avoid this "bug".

On top of blocking ads, AdBlock also blocks a lot of trackers as well, so you should be fairly safe just disabling the Do Not Track feature in AOS settings.

However, this only happens when both AOS and AdBlock are trying to stop the same request. One is allowed to do that and the other is stopped displaying this message, but the request was still blocked.

Adblock Plus blocks ads and I'm pretty sure it blocks trackers... it doesn't have an issue with AOS. No need for any exclusions etc.

Well, it does, as was reported in this thread. You are not aware of it unless you look into Tools > Extensions during the browser session when the issue appeared.

The issues exists only if AOS and AdBlock try to block the same request at the same time, because only 1 extensions is allowed to do that and it will be the one that requests it first, the other will display the mentioned message. This message is for the developers to know, there is a conflict between the extensions. As far as the user is concerned the request is blocked anyway.

My issue is the AOS conflict with PrivDog.
I disabled the AOS. No conflict now.  8)

Similar problem as others with avast! vs. Adblock.  Running Adblock Plus no problem, but Ghostery and DNTM causes an extension conflict w/ avast!  Any solutions?  Also avast! is allowing some trackers that Ghostery is blocking.  Manually disabling trackers through avast! seems to work but why must I do so every time page opens?

The solution is disabling/removing AOS add-on until the issue is fixed.

The web shield scans HTTP and does the malicious blocking so I'd suggest disabling it until the issue is fixed.

Disabling something should be saved locally (unless you clear browser data on every exit).

It's almost two years since this topic was started, and Adblock and Avast Online Security is STILL not compatible with each other. Surely by now, Avast should have come up with a more permanent fix for this issue?

Avast Online Security.
