Been having major problems which I don't understand.
I've been finding a lot of malware and viruses. I've run adwcleaner, but when I try to run OTL it crashes every time, it also creates "shadow" files of desktop.ini on the desktop. When I try to attach anything firefox and chrome crash. I get messages that different things aren't working, including sandboxie.

Follow this guide as far as possible: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
When they dont run try to run from Safe Mode.
If this doesnt work either please wait for an malware remover with further instructions.

Replace OTL with this programme please
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/) and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
- Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
- Press Scan button.
- It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
- Please copy and paste log back here.
- The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Thank-you.

Files not found errors .... seen in the avast screenshots....are usually gone if you reboot and scan again
Have you tried that?
-
I think they're there because I hadn't moved them to quarantine when I went to upload them, but I had done in a later scan, so when I clicked apply they couldn't find what wasn't there anymore.
What were the viruses that were found? Also, you can see there is a lot of malware too.
-
When I run OTL it crashes giving this message.
-
Essexboy will be online later and check your logs
Have you tried to run OTL from safe mode?

I'm not sure how to start safe mode on this computer as I'm new to Windows 8 and Dell.
-
Win8 safemode http://www.howtogeek.com/107511/
-
Safe mode is very hard to get to on windows 8
No apparent malware visible, so I would suggest a system file check
Open an elevated command prompt http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2754-elevated-command-prompt-open-windows-8-a.html
In the black box that opens type the following and press enter :
sfc /scannow
On completion reboot and let me know what problems you are experiencing

You mean the Somoto PUP detections?
PUP = not a virus / Possible Unwanted Program
If you google Somoto Betterinstaller you find a ton of info...
-
They are adware programmes and as such are PUPs
Once sfc has completed
Please download Junkware Removal Tool (http://thisisudax.org/downloads/JRT.exe) to your desktop.
- Right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator" the tool will open and start scanning your system
- please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications
- On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
- post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
-
I got an OTL scan...
and the scannow returned a problem.
-
JTR Scan
-
That is normal for SFC as some ini files are different to the logged ones, and generally are of no concern
What are your current problems
-
Attaching files is hard as firefox crashes sometimes.
-
how often does fireFox crash? Are there running programs in the background?
-
Is it just firefox, does IE function properly
-
I never use IE. Chrome crashes in the same way too.
Just checked and IE doesn't seem to crash.
-
Is there any commonality between the crashes i.e. the number of tabs open, sites visited
-
It happens when I scroll to the bottom when looking for an attachment. It doesn't happen if I don't scroll to the bottom though.
-
Do you use a wheel mouse or have the smooth scroll addon ?
-
Its a mousepad.
-
Ta I will check that out
-
Thanks :).
-
Could you update Chrome to the latest version please and enable smooth scrolling
