Title: ashServ.exe crash on system shutdown - Is it still there -- or not??
Post by: Vlk on May 24, 2005, 04:45:21 PM
Hi *,

just wanted to ask if anyone of you have seen the notorious ashServ.exe error on system shutdown with the latest avast build (4.6.665)?
(The error message says something like

"The instruction at 0x7c910e03 referenced at memory 0x00000000 could not be read. Click ok to terminate the program" and  the title of the dialog is ""ashServ.exe error".

The problem has been dicussed a number of times on this forum, see e.g.
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=11945.0 or
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=12373.0 or
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=13309.0

We made some changes in the last version and would be curious if they fixed the problem or not... I'm not too optimistic in this case - but one never knows. ;)

Thanks
Vlk

Sorry I'm probably not much help here -- no problems at all so far, but it was extremely rare for me (maybe two or three times total) in the earlier versions.

I vaguely seem to remember that in my case, when it did happen was if I shut down with the Standard shield paused for whatever reason.  But far more often, I've done the same thing with no problems, so who knows?

It was very rare for me.
It happened when Explorer.exe crashed before shutting down.
Now, until now, no problems  ;)

I occasionally have blue screen crashes on windows shutdown that still occur with the latest version but I am hesitant to blame Avast!.  Does win95 generate a log we can check?

Have experienced these crashes quite frequently on two of my three laptops. On one of them it happened every time when shutting down, on the other one the crashes were about every third or fourth shutdown.  A third laptop has never had these crashes at all. - Now, with the latest build, all three systems seem to be crash free.

Sorry to say, I have had the problem twice since the update. Fortunately, it's just a minor annoyance. I'm still puzzled, though, about why it's so hard to fix.

Could it be system specific since I have never experienced this problem in nearly 2 years of using avast.  And I really tinker with my system..

I have recently installed it on 3 systems (one desktop and two laptops). The two laptops are used regularly, and I get the occasional error message when shutting down. One machine is quite loaded with software, the other one has been clean installed with only Office 2003, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware and some other small applications (like Adobe Acrobat Reader). Both laptops have SP2 and the latest Windows Updates.

Oh, small Edit here: both laptops are connected on a WiFi network behind a Firewall and on a cable connection to the Net. I can't remember seeing the error on the desktop that goes straight into the router, but I don't boot that unit a lot, and the error is intermittent on the laptops anyway...

The problem is still there. I didn't know it exits since I was using the Home Edition. There is a big message of error system each time I shut down my computer now. At first I didn't know ashSer.exe referes to Avast. I downloaded a special programme to speedup xp shutdown. But nothing happened after seaching in the net I found the problem shown in this forum and I downloaded " http://cat.asw.cz/misc/ashserv.zip" from" PC won't shut down with 4.6.601" to fix it but another message shown says that it can't find AswAux.dll.Maybe it happens because it's a different version. So I have three options either go back to the Home Edition or move on to another antivirus programme or accept the problem and keep things the way they are. I'm totally confused and I don't know what solution should I choose. Please help me. Note: I do use the updating and it says that my program is up to date . my version is 4. 665. "

I downloaded a special programme to speedup xp shutdown.
Which one? Most probably it's not allowing the correct shutdown of programms and processes  ::) :P

Curious, why would you want to speed up a shut down?  I know in XP it takes alot of time to shut down the PC cause you had to end all the programs and saving your settings.  Shutting down a computer takes time and great effort as if your carrying a baby on a ladder. ;)

Thank you for your replies :-*. I guess you are right. I won't use immediate shutdown again. I've decided to use safe shutdown with Evidence Eliminator and when I used it this evening, there was no system error with Avast. I'm a bet hasty I guess. Women  :-[

I have recently installed avast! home edition. I have not experienced the ashServ.exe crash, but now my machine frequently fails to power down after closing windows. I wonder whether this is connected to the ashServ crash. The problem does not always occur, and I am coming to the conclusion that it rather depends how long the computer has been running.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

I've solved the system shutdown problem. It disappeared when I unchecked 'Generate VRDB only when screensaver is running'. I now have to determine whether the same problem occurs if I select 'Generate VRDB when computer is idle'. :)

What do you mean?  ::)
Turning on (loggin) and as fast as we can start to shut down?
If so, this will obviously brings problems as the initialization scripts won't be ended and the shutdown ones will be running, messing Windows startup and shutdown...

not like that. just turn off your computer as usual after the system running for 2-3 hours. just shut it fast.

Just shut it fast.
Sorry to be the stupid guy here... but what is shutting down fast? A 'tweaked' shut down (changing some registry keys, etc.)?
Do we have to change anything in normal shut down of Windows?

I've had the problem enough where it is kind of "embarassing" for me to be talking up how great avast is and then on a shut down it does this crash.  However it doesn't happen very often as everyone says.

I downloaded and installed the home version and have recently started experiencing crashes for ashWebSv.exe.

Are we talking of the same executable?

I use Win XP professional and the crashes have been automatically reported to Microsoft whenever I have been connected to the internet!

Should I report the next crash here too?

Can you see if this link could help you on understanding webshield working? http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=1647.msg100190#msg100190
FAQ about WebShield: http://www.avast.com/eng/webshield_issues.html#idt_6874
WebShield incompatibilites are related to any application that uses the HTTP port (80) to route some non-HTTP (or partially-HTTP) data (including custom HTTP commands etc). See Vlk's explanation here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=11997.msg101376#msg101376

Did you allow ashWebSv.exe to connect the Internet into your firewall settings?
If you disable the Web Shield provider (into avast On-access providers settings) will you be allowed to connect the Internet?

Mukulmadan, ashWebSv.exe is not what this thread is about, but we are interrested in all crashes of course. Currently the windows error reporting page is out of order, so we can not download the crash reports from Microsoft. Could you please go to c:\program files\alwil software\avast4\data\log folder and zip and mail me couple of those UNPxxx and UNPxxx.MDMP files, that are created there on every crash? Thanks. Lukas.

Using Win2k Pro, ashWebSv.exe or ashServ.exe do not cause problems.
A lot of modules is loaded into RAM which are also loaded and used by other programs.

Assuming that Avast is at least partly C(..) programmed, there may occasionaly occur a memory conflict. This may be due to the compiler used by the Avast designers, the operating system itself or another program. I have seen such problems with Acrobat Reader 7 and some other qualified software. Usually nothing serious: some instruction on a specific memory location can't be read and the OS is not knocked out.

I'm afraid system crashes and RAM "tumors" (see the concerning thread), are due to malicious intruders, not yet detectable and penetrating the firewall when you open it (!).
As a matter of fact, I recently found a rootkit and its hidden generator because of the changes it tried (unsuccessfully) to make in Avast and the Sygate firewall. They were after my creditcard data and I don't even have one  ;D.

The virus did not succeed because all vulnerable files are protected and monitored for changes. There are many freeware programs giving this additional protection. Some of them malware themselves.

Вообще, эту проблему я решил так, предварительно загрузившись (boot) с дискеты (a:).

  "delete   x:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aswRdr.sys"

Видимо тобой была выполнена ручная переустановка программы антивируса :)
Почему так, объяснить не могу.

I came across the forum seeking this problem and to see if it's been discussed.

I don't see the error message as specified in the original post but the AshServ refuses to respond to the kill process requests when shutting down.  I simply click the "End Process" button and the system proceeds to shut down.  This occurs about 75-80% of the time for me but now that I've seen this thread, I will pay closer attention to it.

It is indeed quite irritating as I have to babysit the shutdown whereas I normally wouldn't need need to.

Otherwise, great product and it still gets my endorsement (which came with a ringing endorsement from my Dad).

Masonfoley, indeed it's a very rare problem of avast!, mostly with systems without SP2 or Windows 98 and, simultaneously, with a firewall.
Do you use any other antivirus in your system? Which is your firewall? Which Windows do you have?

Every time, hang is still done in my environment. If possible, I want you to fix it immediately. Because this bug is not fixed, I think AVG is used instead though AVAST is very favorite software.

It is a situation similar as for a lot of users in Japan.

I'm still having problems when I try to do a virus scan of any sort.  The computer goes blue sceen for a fraction of a second and then reboots itself.

The scanners work well at catching problems immediately, but if I try to scan something.....

The computer goes blue sceen for a fraction of a second and then reboots itself.
Maybe you can boot in Safe Mode (pressing F8 while booting and choosing the proper option) and then:
Control Panel > System > Advanced > Initialization
Uncheck the option "Automatic Restart".
Boot again and post the error message of the blue screen.

I recently bought a new computer and installed XP home w/SP2. I have yet to have this problem after 2 months. Before this computer, I had (and still have) a computer running W98SE but can not remember ever having this problem with it. I do not know if it matters or not but both computers were custom built. I guess I have been one of the lucky ones!    :D

Answer to question in thread:

I have not seen this error after updating to 731.

Before that I had it now and then(estimated 20-30% of number of shutdowns.)

So thumbs up.

Hello,

I am French, and like one of multiple world wide users (can we say that in correct English ?) of Avast, I did experienced some problems with it, without knowing it at first  ???

But first of all, to all the staff of Avast, I am using Avast Home Edition, your product is fantastic for several reasons, one of them being a comparison with that thing named Nortonblabla  ;D, the main being the freeware side of things  :) . Thanks a lot to all of you, you do a great job, and I wouldn't change my protection  for ano ther one  :D

Talking about that, like I said, I had a problem with Shutdown frozen. It appears one day in 2005, and until 2 days ago, no clue about it. I did try many things, thinking of windows behavior, or malware (good Hijack) etc..., writing a shutdown.bat routine, spending hours on forums...  >:(, until I found a topic about shutdown and Avast . What ???  :o How come that little sweety thing can do that so nasty ununderstanding talk with my computer  :-\ Well, it does happen  :)

2 days on the forum before I decide to register (today) to tell you that I have found the solution by reading you and that it works very well so fare, even being connected on few web sites, connection open, all protections on. My computer is closing itself when asked, without anymore problem  ;D

My config is :

Asus KN8 E de luxe
chipset nVidia nForce3-S
AMD athlon 64 3000+
1023 DDR RAM 3200 Mo/s at 400 MHz
Windows XP SP2 pro

Protection is :
Avast antivirus home edition 4.6.744, toolkit version 1.9.4.0, virus definition is 0603-3
Kerio firewall free
Spyboot Search and Destroy and Tea Timer
Spyware Gard and blaster
Xp antispy with safeXP

All softs are up to date, beside windows, because i disabled all that crap ! 8) (But I am thinking to do it some times)

1° I did applied the patch  "aavmker4.sys", did work first time, and then once again  :-\
2° Applied the dep tutorial (Start--> Control Panel --> System --> Advanced --> Performance Settings --> Data Execution Prevention -->
Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select --> set second option and add  ashserv.exe)
and guess what  ;D, every thing is all right since  8)

3° I did applied the pcmedik, just in case memory problem, dit the test of shutdown couple ot time, still OK

QUESTIONS :

Will the soft be including some king of fix in future versions
Will it be a problem to download the next versions, with the actual fix on my computer (by the way, my brother has the same protection but with Intel and XP SP2 home édition, no problem at all)

Like I am a happy user of Avast, I am talking about the soft around me. Will the problem be recurrent or are you thinking of a general fix (cause I am the one who goes to repair  ;D :-[)

last thing, I have the chance to speak english, but my french fellows are not so good at it (yes I know what can be said by you people  8) ;)) Could it be an idea to translate in french

That it, hope being not to long, but I had to say it

About what I said to PCMédik,  :-X

I did undo the changes (and restore to previous step 2) because suddenly, same problem again :(

It's OK AGAIN WITHOUT PCMEDIK  :-\

There is a French version available in the download section of 'www.avast.com'.

thank you electronikk

I did knew. In fact I was talking about the web site. But I was just being selfish, sometimes I am just to tired to read english when it becomes too technical.  :P So forget it, I'll use my english dictionnary

Sorry guys to bother you again, but

the fix I tried works 50% wich is much better than before where it was 0 %.  ??? But the problem is not solved totally, which is annoying.  >:(  It seems that one of the reason has to do with the time spent on the Web. The longer it is and the Shutdown freeze is operating again. Could it be an unknown virus or spyware doing that. I have tried all the protection thing and nada ! I have tried Hijack and nothing  :-\

So, how could I help you in order to get things going better, or as anyone a solution to offer. My config is in the first post.
Should I ask for technical support of Avast Soft ?

Thank you
