Today when waking up my PC, Avast indicated a new search engine profile needed to be updated, and that after I would have to restart my PC. This was different than the usual green box in the lower right pop up and verbal "Avast has been updated" After a restart I had NO INTERNET CONNECTION. I opened avast and it said I had "0" days left on my subscription. I have about 1 year left. I tried to uninstall Avast from the control panel, but apparently you can't do this, you have to use the avast clear tool. I chose did a Restore Point to right before the Avast 2014 update and was able to connect to the internet again, BUT, Avast was not operational and would not accept my license key. After an hour and a half with Avast Tech Support, they indicated there must be a problem with my PC and that they could offer a $179 service to fix my PC. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I'd rather download an alternative internet security trial and see if that would work first, seeing as I had NO PROBLEMS for 4 years with Avast until today's 2014 update. My feeling is there is is a bu or incompatibility with the new update and some computers. I chose an earlier restore point, a week ago, and was able to connect to the internet. The Avast popped up again saying I had "0" days left on my subscription and I clicked the RED renew box, avast entered a "not responding" mode. I used the End Task from the Task Manager, and doing so somehow, the avast started responding. I them went to subscription and used browse to enter my license key and it accepted my key. So, my system has started operating properly again and I didn't have to pay $179 for a service which I would have expected for free since the problem only occurred during the 2014 update. Something definitely happened during the update and restart the first time which did not allow me to connect to the internet. Not so sure that it was my PC, which the tech support person said was the case 99.9% of the time.

Sorry Eddy,
It has nothing to do with Windows 8.1 I just updated 6 computers all running Windows 8.1 to avast! 2014
without any problems. :)
@jmmug,
Glad you solved your problem and happy that the Third Party Support didn't get you money. :)
If you have a problem, please ask it here. There are many of us who would gladly help without charging for that service. :)

I had the same problem with the tech but then while we were in remote I took over and went to control panel and clicked uninstall then avast asked if I want to uninstall update change or repair so I selected repair and it fixed the problem, but two days later, Now this minute I have the same problem and that trick don't work only I have internet now just avast don't work. What a scam for money.

Hi,
Try this, I believe the upgrade strips out some firewall settings that maybe crucial for the browsing the internet.
Got to Settings -> Tools -> Firewall - > Customize -> Packet Rules
Make sure you have the following entries.
PING OUT - Allow - ICMP(1) - Out - ICMP Type 8
Traceroute OUT - Allow - ICMP(1) - Out - ICMP Type 30
PING IN - Allow - ICMP(1) - In - ICMP Type 8
Traceroute IN - Allow - ICMP(1) - In - ICMP Type 30
Make sure they are enabled
Click OK
Test connection ;)

Same problem as OP but also I could not type in my windows7 password so that's part of the reason I did the system restore. Now I still have no act key how do I find it on my pc? Also I am afraid to update avast internet security again. Also the email attached to my account is no longer active. How do I obtain an activation license key or code? I have my customer number from getting it off one of my other computers. PLEASE HELP! :(

If you have the free version, just get a new key from the website.
