Title: A.I.S. 2014 still blocks my home network
Post by: -André- on October 25, 2013, 02:48:59 PM
Hi,

Avast I.S. 2014 is still blocking my home network and home group, even when I disabled the avast Firewall.

No problem with my modem/router and no problem when I use AVG Free.

3 or 4 times I got the mention : contact between pc’s only allowed with the license “Premier”.

With 25 months subscription avast! Internet Security to go, I was obliged to delete avast! and to download AVG Free to have access on my home network and home group.

Incredible !!

Grtz,  André.

Some firewall issues are to be addressed in the next week upgrade.
Are you trying to access the newtwork or use Remote Assistance avast! feature?

Hi Tech,

Thanks for your answer.
Then, I'll wait until  after next week.

I only work with my home network or home group and I do not know what you mean with the Remote Assistance avast! feature (I'm 62 years old and not an expert).

avast! Premier has a feature that allow you to give remote assistance to other users. Or, on contrary, ask for another user to give remote assistance to you.

I do not have avast! Premier but avast! Internet Security.

Can I reinstall the older version 8 until the upgrade of the version 2014.9?  And how to do (I already tried twice).

Tech,

Just saw this post.  Would you happen to know when that upgrade is coming out next week?  Like Andre, installing Avast 2014 IS has now rendered my home network useless :(

Hi all,

I just recieved an answer from avast! Support.  I believe it will interest you too.

You can read it here below.

============================================

Hello André! I'm sorry for the late reply.
Thank you for contacting AVAST Software company with your concerns.

Reinstall avast! completely, please. It seems to be the easiest solution of the problem.
Even if you did it before, do it again this way, using the uninstall utility, please:

1. Download the uninstall utility onto your desktop from this page:

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode. Here you can learn how to start Windows in safe mode:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true

3. Open (execute) the uninstall utility (in Windows Safe Mode, of course)
4. If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
5. Click REMOVE
6. After using that tool, restart your computer

7. Download the latest version of avast! from this page:

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe - avast! Internet Security
or
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe - avast! Pro Antivirus
or
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe - avast! Premier
or
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe - avast! Free Antivirus

8. Install it with default values.

9. Finally, insert your license file (if you're using the paid version) or register the program (if you're using the free version).
Your license file can be sent again upon filling up this form:

http://www.avast.com/resend-license-paid.php

If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to contact me again.
Best Regards

Andre,

Please let us know if doing a total uninstall reinstall fixes you.  I already did this as avast 8 quit updating to begin with so that's why I updated to 2014 :(

@ evita1,

I have 3 PC's, all 3 Win7 Home Premium :

N° 1 is wired - DSL
N° 2 : WiFi - WPA2 - Personal Type AES
N° 3 : WiFi also

I de-installed AVG Free and installed the AVAST Internet Security as proposed by AVAST Technical Support on N° 2 : It worked, Perfect.

I did the same with N° 3 : It worked, Fantastic.

I had a complete approach in my Home Network and Home Group.

Remained N° 1, the wired one.  You guess ... : All 3 blocked again.

On N° 1, I previously had a crash with some HP software (scanner) and thought this could be the cause, so I did a complete re-install of Win7 with the Recovery DVD.

My whole Home Network and Windows Firewall still are blocked (attachment) and again, no way to unblock.  My happiness didn't last for long.

My modem/router has  been controlled by my Internet-provider and is OK (any problem with AVG Free).

So, I'll have to contact the AVAST Technical Support again.

Grtz,  André.

Hi Andre,

Thanks so much for replying.  Our are connected via Ethernet cables to our router.   There was another suggestion made on a post of mine to create a new homegroup and have all the pcs connect to the new group.    It didn't work for us.  I left my home group, hubby left his,  he made a new one and the only option I had under homegroup was to create a new one, no join option :(

Hope tech support can solve your problem.

evita1,

You will read from me when my problem is solved.

Maybe I have to do a re-install of AVAST I.S. on my 2 WiFi-PC's (N° 2 and 3).  I just saw that the Windows Firewall is NOT blocked on my wired PC (N° 1).

What exactly are you trying to do with the Windows Firewall?! AIS already installs its own firewall. If you want to use Windows Firewall, then do not install the one from Avast!

Like I said before in this topic, I'm not an expert and I didn't touch anything while installing AVAST Internet Security.
The AVAST Firewall was installed by it selves.
I just tried to switch the A. Firewall OFF, it didn't work.

Don't get me wrong... but - how about at least reading the description of the product you are installing?!?! http://www.avast.com/internet-security

Once again, install either Avast FREE or do NOT install the firewall component in AIS if you want to use Windows firewall.

And like I said before, I didn't install the Avast Firewall, it installed it selves, without any intervention of me.

Andre,

Your posts make it sound like you have Windows Firewall AND Avast firewall installed at the same time.   If that's true, you can't have 2 software firewalls running at the same time.  You can only have 1.    :)

Uh oh... You are NOT supposed to mess with the disabled Windows Firewall. It is supposed to stay disabled. Why are you trying to enable it? You will NOT fix your networking problems by running two firewalls at the same time, the only thing you will achieve is creating even a bigger mess.

If you want to use the firewall provided by AIS, then you need to configure the firewall via the Avast GUI, not by going to Windows control panel and messing with the disabled ("blocked") Windows Firewall. If the product is way over your head, stick with a simpler one (avast Free/avast PRO), or kindly read the documentation and get some basic grip of what you are doing and how's it supposed to work. Or use the custom install option and deselect the firewall component. Instead of blindly clicking on Yes/Next.

I didn't touch anything.  I didn't install or activated/De-activated anything : no Windows Firewall and no Avast Firewall.

I let the install go on it selves.  I am not competent to do such things.

I tried to modify the Firewall after the upgrade to 2014.9. No way to change.  Before, I was completely satisfied.

On this new install, after De-install with avastclear, I didn't touch anything.  True!!

You configure AIS firewall in the AIS (Avast) GUI. NOT where you are looking, see picture above. Please, read some documentation. If unwilling, simply use a simpler product.

It's "blocked" by design. On purpose. Intentionally. This is NOT a bug.

Eh... Clearly, AIS is not for you.

- Uninstall AIS: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
- Download Avast FREE (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe) or Avast PRO (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe)
- Install it
- Check whether Windows Firewall is enabled
- Move on.

Note: Not sure whether AIS license works for avast PRO. Maybe someone could arrange the licensing for you if it does not so that you can at least use the SafeZone feature.

Alternatively: get local help from someone computer-savvy. With "Don't even know what AIS (Avast) GUI means," debugging firewall issues is outright impossible.

You will be more protected by NOT using it and sticking with something that is completely automated and working out of the box with possibly no prompts about anything whatsoever. If you have no clue what you are doing and don't even know how to launch the configuration GUI, you seriously should not be configuring firewalls.

Is this what they call customer-friendliness?  Or do they want us to upgrade to avast! Premier?

I've got 3 or 4 times the mention that contact with other PC's only is possible with the subscription "Premier", the most expensive subscription.

Please, use http://www.avast.com/contact-form.php to descibe your issues with the support and provide information about the "upselling" practices directly to Avast (the support is outsourced, not provided directly by Avast). What another forum?  ???

I wanted you to contact Avast sales directly so that the support issues you mentioned here get resolved and the phone support company stops upselling people with unneeded products. Once again, the support is outsourced to another company, and NOT provided by Avast themselves. If you are not happy with the contact form (not another forum!), I'd suggest to report it to Adam Riley directly here on the forum: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=profile;u=16074

If you are not interested in resolving this, well... not really sure what to say.

Since you already asked, you normally do NOT hijack other people's topic with unrelated problems (such as port forwarding here). It interferes with solving your problem, and will not get the other problem solved either. Will just make hell of a mess out of the thread. It's common sense and also common practice on pretty much any forum out there.

Other than that - really sorry to have wasted my time with you. I even got other people  involved in order to get in touch with Avast about the phone support issue. And what did I get for that?

So, let me conclude this with an absolutely honest reply: Sir, you should not EVER administrate any computer whatsoever. You should not have admin rights on anything that even remotely resembles a computer. And, if you need help, you need to pay for it, since you've just annoyed pretty much the only person who's been willing to spend free time on getting your problem resolved somehow. Well done! Uninstalling the new Avast 2014 firewall fixed it.

Hi Jont, and Hi all,

Thanks for the tip. But ... .

Did you go in the avast control panel?

In the avast control panel, I don't find it to uninstall the firewall  : I only see things like VPN-2LTP and ICPM (attachment).  I do not know what this means and do not dare to touch it.

Like I said, I'm not an expert.  My language is Dutch and the PC-English and -abbreviations are an extra problem for me.

Do you have avast Free or any subscription?

In the meantime, my whole home network is blocked again.

I'm getting tired of it.

Same here, My hoe network is down, can't see my NAS, can't use my PC as a media server for my blue ray with Nero Mediahome, strange messages when using Firefox and some plugins.

I uninstalled the whole thing in safe mode and resintalled it.  While I was reinstalling it in normal mode, all my devices were there on the network.  After a reboot back to home network down.  Can't see anything...

So right now I can't make any synch with Itune since all my stuf are on the SAN.

In one of the post, there was suppoe to have an update last monday, but nothing so far.  This info was confirmed by a support rep las sunday but looks like he was B.S.ing!

With this version, that I paid, I'm not very happy and think I will go back to AV free.

Avast 2014 is blocking port forwarding. Did not happened before 2014.

@ Jont,

I solved my problem by removing the Avast firewall (via control panel\uninstall program, selected change and removed the tick from the firewall) now using the win7 firewall.

Hi Jont,

Can you please explain me, step by step, how you did it?

André....

Have you tried simply turning off the firewall in Settings, to see if this is going to solve your problems? If not, go to Settings... Active Protection and turn the firewall off using the switch on the right hand side beside it. Then try and see if your problem s fixed. If so, please report that here so that the devs have additional info to work with. Rather than uninstalling the firewall, I would prefer to see the devs fix this so we maintain the level of protection Avast Firewall affords. The Windows firewall is okay for what it is... a very basic, low end firewall that is not very configurable, and only protects one way. It doesn't hold a candle to the Avast one, and I would hate to see you fall back on using it permanently.

Hi GreggH,

My language is Dutch.  I try to explain my problem in the best way.  I didn't explain myself very well.  It is NOT the meaning to uninstall ... but to switch off.

I also have a topic running in Dutch.  Just like me, nobody seems to find the tick to switch off.

In the meantime, I have a free anti virus program running and my home network works perfectly ... but I will install avast! I.S. again (maybe for the last time).  Like I said before, I'm getting seriously tired of it.  Constantly running around with an USB-stick isn't very pleasant.

You will read from me.

@ Gregg,

In the attachments you will see that the avast! Firewall is switched off.

I needed 2 attempts to approach PC Home 2 from Home 3.

Normally this situation doesn't last but I give it a try to help everyone on this forum.

If it doesn't last, I will take screenshots and post them.  OK?

Same here Avast 2014 firewall is screwing up up my my media server (mede8erx3d1000),
Uninstall Avast firewall and it works  fine, reinstall Avast firewall and network connection
is blocked.
I submitted a ticket to Avast support about this problem and they replied back with these
tweaks to do in the Avast firewall settings, which made no difference.
Waiting for further instructions from the tech guy.

Dear customer,

thank you for contacting us. Can you please open your avast! and then follow these steps:

Tool -> Firewall -> Customize -> Policies -> System Rules-> Allow Windows file and printer sharing check enabled

then

Tool -> Firewall -> Customize -> Policies -> System Rules-> Allow rdc check enabled

then

Tool -> Firewall -> Customize -> Policies -> Packet Rules-> Enable windows Networking in and out

This should fix the issue if not please do not hesitate contact me back

I don't know if this would make any difference:
What setting do you have on the firewall, Private/Home - Work - Public ?

You could try change that and see if it makes a difference.

Sorry I can't speak from personal experience as I don't have AIS.

Spent many hours trying to figure out what happened to my Homegroup. My subscription is up for renewal 11/24 and if this is not resolved I will be an EX-Avast user. We have a very large Homegroup and no one but me can print, etc. I like Avast but this is untenable!! I am NOT going to uninstall and re-install and play those games. There are plenty of programs for my needs. And I do NOT mind paying for service, but this is not service. I am going to inform everyone who gets my IT newsletter there could be an issue with their Homegroup!!

Hi Aztony,

I have avast! running on only one of the 3 PC's (WiFi).  Problems began each time with the cabled PC and after some definition updates.

I only can consider this issue as resolved when all 3 PC's interconnect with the avast! Firewall running.

Tomorrow afternoon I'll do the 2nd WiFi PC and the day after the cabled one.  When everything is OK I will let you know.

Let's say there is hope at least.  And please, don't feel sorry ;).  This is a challenge for both, the avast! makers and the -users.

André.

still having issues.  The only thing that fixes the issues is to go back to version 8.  Tried installing twice and both times it disabled firewall and then blocked internet.  Tried to uninstall Avast 2014 and computer crashed.  Had to do a system restore from a few days ago.  Back on Avast version 8 and everything is fine.  When my subscription is up in April I will not be renewing, will go back to being a free user as these errors obviously have not been fixed.  Put in a support ticket and they kept telling me that it was something on my end, but reading this forum I know that I'm not the only one having problems.

I am new here, because I am having this very same problem. Have 3 PCs connected via WiFi to LinkSys Router. only one PC of these (mine) is using Avast I.S. The other two are using free protection, and are both having no problems. But mine with A.I.S. is only able to connect to the WWW by disabling Avast, once connected I can then re-enable Avast protection. My renewal comes up early next year, so hope there is a cure on its way. Have tried all possible exclusions with no success.

PS........Also this verification used to post, surely is not required. My vision and hearing are impaired, and I have great difficulty in deciphering this gobble-de-gook!

1. are you using the latest avast version, 9.0.2007 ?
If not - You can try a manual program update from the avastUI as version 9.0.2007 is now available, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=138753.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=138753.0), for more information.

Hi Kennet,

avast! always has been one of the best AV programs.

I'm convinced that the Dev Group is working hard to keep their reputation high.

Giving them a good feedback will help them helping us out of our problems asap.

Here, my situation is stable now.  Tomorrow I will install AIS on my 2nd PC and the day after on the 3rd.

I keep you informed.

André.

Start -> Control Panel -> Programs and features -> Avast! Internet Security (click once/make it blue) -> Uninstall/Change -> Change -> Continue -> untick avast! Firewall in the middle column -> Continue -> Finish/restart

So don't look for it in the Avast settings, but get this done in your Windows control panel.

Good luck André :)

@ beringer,

Thanks.

Never had so much choice in the uninstall/change of a software.  Didn't know this.

But right now my system is stable and everything works with the avast! Firewall active on one of my PC's.

In 5 minutes I will install AIS on my 2nd PC (WiFi) and let it stabilize it selves for a day.

If OK, tomorrow I'll do the 3rd PC.  In case of troubles, now I can disable the avast Firewall.

Hi All,

I installed AIS on my 2nd PC and everything looked stable, so I did the same on my 3rd PC.

Now, 2 hours later, with the program 2014.9.0.2007 and virus definitions up to date and the avast Firewall active, everything is very OK.

All PC's are approachable and I can print from my 3 PC's.

Thanks to everyone.

Installed new on two computers after updating them to 8.1:  On Internet Security version 2014.9.0.2008

And, as long as the Firewall is on, File sharing between those computers is dead.  Can't "find the path" when they try to see each other's shares.

Turn it off and it's fine.

So, as of 2014.9.0.2008, for me at least....  Not.  Fixed.

Hi daneyuleb,

I forgot to mention that you can repair, or maybe better re-install avast! after an avastclear.

See the topic : AVAST 2014 Program update (9.0.2008) from pavels.

This could solve your problem.

Hi Andre,

Thanks for that.  I did the removal reinstall on both systems, lo and behold, they could file share again with the firewall on.  But.. the next day, after rebooting, computer a fails again to see the file share on computer b (strangely, the b can see a just fine).  Turn the firewall off on b, and it's fine again.  It worked for two days and I made no changes to the systems or network in the interim.

I think -something- is still hosed in Avast w/Win 8.1.

Not sure what, though.  Looking forward to try the next update.

RESOLVED!!!!!!!! UPDATE AVAST SOFTWARE!

I struggled with this issue for the month, tried everything. Avast has updated the software, not sure when. I did not receive a notification, however, I clicked on update software and low and behold there was an update and the changelog had a lot of network detection changes and mentioned that it now fully supports IPv6 which Homegroup uses to communicate.

It now works fine like before avast!
