Not happy that it required Chrome to upgrade, plus I cannot access my blog from Firefox.

Like what? I pay for this. the question was simple why can't I access my blog using Firefox?

What os/service pack are you using?
What exact version of avast?
Any other security software installed? If so which one(s).
Did you had other security installed? If so which one(s) and how did you removed it.
Any error? If so which one?
What blog?
