Currently using avast free version 8..0.1501.
The updates page indicates that a new version is available: "9.0.1501"
but there is no version "9.0.1501" listed in the avast releases history .
See screenshot.
is 9.0.1501 a valid Avast Free version number??

8.0.1501 would have been an internal beta, Id suggest you download the newest version here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=138753.0

2014.9.0.2007 is the latest version.

The 8.0.1500 (or .1501) essentially were interim results where compatibility is/was checked for the update to avast 9.0.2006/7.
If you proceed with the update then the build number you should end up with is 9.0.2007.

It seems that if you're using avast 8, then the new version offered somehow gets to be 9.0.1500 (or 8.0.1500), instead of 9.0.2006 (or 2007 since yesterday).
-
As I said this is some sort of interim check function and if you follow through with the program update you get the latest avast 9.0 version.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will proceed with the update and see what happens. If that doesn't work out right then I will do a separate download and reinstall of the newest version.
..nice forum of helpfull members.

If you go for a clean install, I suggest to use avastclear to remove the current installation first.

outcome::
The in-program updater would not function so I downloaded the newest version (2014.9.0.2007) of Avastfree and installed it over the existing one. All seems well.
