Title: Need to download older version of avast
Post by: fuzzbucket on November 02, 2013, 09:47:15 PM
One machine I use is still happy on Win 2000 Pro - and is too old to update. It rarely goes on line, and has been running on avast just fine. BUT - this time when I downloaded the instal file as instructed it says Win XP onwards only, and to download avast 8 Free. I can't find it anywhere - three sites that claim to have it actually download the newest one from the version 8 link. Can anyone help me locate a safe download site for version 8 (or even 7, at a pinch !) ?

Bummer. It can't cope. At the moment I can't do a thing with it except in safe more.. You know where I can go back to 7 - I think that was what it WAS running on....

You guys are awesome. I did try the hippo site - but couldn't make it show me anything but 8....

Now if I could only REGISTER without the thing freezing my whole machine on me (I went through this last year - and yes, I left out the behaviour module...)

OK - so - I have 6 installed. And I shut down ZoneAlarm - which was the issue last year. But every time I go to register, the machine freezes completely. Any ideas ?

Or do I finally have to take the poor thing off line - it will be very sad, as it works fine, but I am not about to run with no AV :(

Hi fuzzbucket,

Have you tried a different AV than Avast?

If you know ANY other one that still works with Win2000 (and is free) I would LOVE to hear about it !

Not AVG. Not avira. Not panda...

By the way this one is one of the most popular sites for downloads in Brazil. You can always use google translate Portuguese to English .

Cheers

The unthreat link downloads the 2013 version which - surprise - does not support 2000.... Pity - it has good reviews. Still working on it.... Thanks.

PC Tools are no longer supported, Symantec has let it die ;)

Thank you all so much. I am just gearing the old dear up to try these things :) I will let you know what happens as soon as I know - though I have to be away for two days soon... This is an ongoing labour ! (I have - I think - 17 days before avast totally dies... (uninstallingand reinstalling seems to hang on to that info - it works but then won't register..)

Note that ClamWin is not an active antivirus.  The only part of ClamWin active is the tray icon and the signature updater. http://www.clamwin.com/ (http://www.clamwin.com/)

Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.

ClamWin comes with the Ask Toolbar.  You must watch the install closely and opt out or it will be installed.  http://www.clamwin.com/content/view/217/27/ (http://www.clamwin.com/content/view/217/27/)

Ask.com shares advertising revenue with ClamWin and our team will use the received money to fund the development of new features.

For further details please see this page http://www.clamwin.com/ask/

That said, I have it installed on my WinXP machine for a second manual scanner.

OK - thanks. I don't use a browser with that machine, but thanks for the heads up; I will seek and destroy :) I'm quite happy to scan it every time I use it ! I am just happy to have something I CAN use :)

Good call graigb  ;) You are absolutely right. In that site they say that it is updated but infrequently. Go figure.

Happy for you fuzzbucket  :) Win 2000 pro sp4 is ( was)one of the best OSs.

@ Tangy,
This is the avast support forum. Helping people with avast! problems or computer related problems is a noble thing to do.  :)
Recommending and posting links for other AV programs is certainly not the right thing to do.  :(

@bob

-_- Avast has been miserably failing with Avast 9. Heck, I did a clean install of Windows 7 YESTERDAY and I cannot even access Avast by clicking or right clicking on the icon to the bottom of the pc (on the right hand side). So, I certainly do not blame others for referring other AV's. I have to manually click on start and click on Avast on my list.

pidao over all avast 9 is very stable, just because some people have problems doesn't mean it comes anywhere close to failing miserably  ::) the only reason other AV's were suggested was purely because the OP has Win2000.

If I am not mistaken, avast! 8 Free works on Windows 2000. Some extra features may be missing but in general it should work. After all there are tens of thousands people still using it.

Yep!! Btw: for Win2000 and WinXP I still use AVAST! 4.8.1368.0 (full pro; with a one year free license – just register normally on the website by email request; registration code for new avast is working on 4.8!) – and I really love the on-access-scanner-messages always popping up in the right lower corner of the display; that's very useful for seeing what's going on ...

So please AVAST!-guys: don't let AVAST 4.8 die and please make it downloadable again on your website!!! It is still the best AV-solution for people who are aware where they surf to (i.e. avast 5/6/7/8/9 might have more protection schemes, but basic protection is there – and that's the most important thing).

Btw: the only issue is some lowered responsiveness while updating; but with the setting "ask when update is available", you can postpone update to the first best situation you can afford it and are not bothered by a blocked PC; that is done best some minutes or even seconds after that (beautiful) small green popup. And also the updating window is not too big (as it is in the later versions). The only unnecessary thing is the focus stealing nag screen popping up from time to time ... AVAST! 4.8 still has best design of all the versions since then!

avast! 4.8... I've thought it was a dream... Need to read three times to believe... 10 years...
I think it's time to move on... It's not true the protection is the same. Far from the reality...

That also explains why so many people are still clinging to Windows XP.
15 years old, hard to keep secure and soon will loose all updates but, many still love their antiques. :)
I just hope that their insecure computer don't make it harder for the rest of us to stay safe.

Windows XP is the most insecure system for malware at the moment.

Give us an OS in the classic design of Windows 2000/XP on the surface (including some additional functionalities like FolderSize etc.) with an AntiVirus-Solution in the design of AVAST 4.8 ... and that all running on a PC with 256 or 512 MB of RAM on a 8 GB Harddisk under a P-III-Processor. THEN switching to newer systems would not be a big question – but only then!

And because the XP computer I do have would choke on Windows 7 and it is fine for all my needs, I will be moving to Linux land.  ;D

Stay safe?  Not if XP continues to be put on the internet and security weaknesses are exploited to create massive botnets after support ends in April.  Not going to happen, that we're going to stay safe.  It's hairy enough as it is, but it will be worse after April if XP is not removed for personal and safety reasons.  Businesses are migrating away because because of that, and they don't want to lose monies by being penny wise and pound foolish.  As of now, XP is still at 27% usage out of all os's with only five months of support left.

OS percentage should diminish rapidly just after April as businesses should almost be done with XP by then.  [EDIT:]  If not, that is because they are willing to pay Microsoft for extended support coverage, something the common user does not have access to.

But what is really scary is how many computers in China and India will still be running XP after April. My understanding is that some companies will have real trouble migrating because many of their web applications need IE6 that will not run on other browsers.

That has been my BIG problem. I simply could not get to the registration window - to enter a code I got by email. Very sad. It froze the machine every single time, for days and days. I had to give up.

And yes - give us something that is NOT LIKE Windows 8, not even like 8.1 and I will think about it for my XP machine. 8 (adn 8.1) is beyond awful. But the 2000 one won't take even XP - it is just too old and creaky ! The next machine I buy will be a mac. I have had it with Windows.
