Why is access denied to Virus Chest??

I just installed Avast Anti-Virus (Home Edition) today for the first time. A complete scan of my computer revealed several viruses, which I attempted to move to the virus chest. Every time I attempted to move a virus to the virus chest, I received a messages that stated "Access Denied". Why is this? Instead of moving the aforementioned viruses to the virus chest, I had had no other choice but to delete them. Any help or suggestions regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

What was the virus name/s, what was the filename/s, where it was found
  example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)?

As you have said deleting is not the best first action, why access was denied to the chest is strange, often the file can't be moved (or deleted) because it is running and windoes is protecting it. So it is strange not to be able to move it but be able to delete it.

If it was a trojan virus, deletion is not a real problem - Trojans generally can't be repaired (either by the VRDB or avast virus cleaner), because the entire content of the file is malware.
