Hi,
I frequently get errors mailed to me bij Avast Server Edition when it tries to scan excell-files attached to e-mails.
MAIL]: AAVM - scanning warning: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx: Olivia Geerinckx/Inbox/listing Proximus.EML/Listing STIM (Franstalig) dd. 25-04-04.xls (C:\WINNT\TEMP\Vx2572.tmp) returning error, 0000A477.
It gives the same error code everytime. I found in another post that this is a macro-virus error or something like that. But it does not say what is causing this error. Is there a special requirement to scan .xls-files?
Thanks,
Herman

This error is usually caused by a corrupted XLS/DOC file. Is it possible to open this file in Excel?
These are more like warnings (not errors) - just telling you that the scan of the file couldn't be completed (typically because the structure of the file is not sound).

The files open with excell 2003 (dutch) without any problem.

Do they contain any confidential info? I mean, can you send them for inspection?

Since I am not the owner of the files, I'll ask.

Thanks. Hopefully Olivia will agree :)

My sincere apologies. I just learned that she first got an e-mail with an unreadable xls-file, and later on with a correct one. So Avast was correct in producing an error on the first file. It would however be a good suggestion to the programmers to 'explain' the error in a message instead of just giving an undocumented error code. Or is there a list with errors and their explanation somewhere?
Thanks,
Herman

Basic list is here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=5719
The codes in decimal format though - unlike in the log you quoted, that has the value in hexadecimal format.
Windows Calculator can convert between decimal and hexadecimal, for example.
Thanks
