Title: Avast 9 memory consumption problem
Post by: ank91 on November 15, 2013, 01:13:53 PM
avast 9.0.2008 free x86

avast has memory (RAM) consumption problem -
-------------------------------------------------------------------
here is the workaround--

Step1:
open up avast UI.
click on Statistics tab on left side to open a new Statistics window.

Step2:
close AVAST UI (the window behind the "Statistics" window).
but keep "Statistics" window opened.
lastly close "Statistics" window as well.

Step3:

open up task manager (by right clicking on task bar)
and look for avastui.exe memory usage.
it seems that avastui.exe is consuming huge memory(~50 mb) than that of normal/idle (~5 mb).
because all avast window are closed now it sud consume about 5 mb memory only.

How to release avastui memory now???
open up avast ui and close it once.
now open task manager and see what? avastui.exe is normal/idle now (~5 mb memory usage only)

this not a big problem/bug i think.
but if user has closed avastui and keep "Statistics" window open and close it later.
then it would be a big memory leak problem.

thanks ! hope you guys will fix it soon.

Closing the avastUI (including the statistics) and not leaving it open should return to more normal levels.

You should also know that there is a program update 9.0.2008, you can initiate a manual program update rather than wait your turn in the update cycle (to prevent overloading the update servers).

See image one with UI and Stats open, and image 2 just after both were closed.

The Statistics window (not so much the avastUI.exe as such) is pretty graphics intensive so will be using more RAM, but it should return to near normal levels when closed.

ok, got your point.

but if we change the order of closing the window, then "avastui.exe" will not go in normal/idle mode until we open it again and close it.

Well it you close them in order, the Statistics window would have focus (be on top anyway) and bigger.

For me the main UI page is almost completely obscured by the Statistics window, so I would have to concentrate on reversing the order to close the UI first.

The statistic window actually uses more CPU than a normal media player.

I've seen the same thing as of the O.P. It does not release memory for a long time even after closing. We had to release it just like how he explained.

Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit

Avast 9.0.2008

After opening Statistics window after Avast ui, and closing that, ram was 33mbs, reopened Avast ui, and ram dropped down to 4.2mbs in Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit here

ok, here is one another workaround-->

Open Statistics window click "Component status" , click "Software updater" rectangle box.
It will bring avast ui window up, here many user will close avast ui window first and then Statistics.
and "avastui.exe" will be consuming about 50 MB RAM until user open avast ui and close it once.

i m just posting these issue to make avast experience better.
nothing else.

Memory leaks are always important to resolve, and in this case it may help that it can be easily demonstrated. Have you initiated a support ticket about this. I'm not sure one can count on Avast looking into all of the issues raised in the forum.

I HAVE GOT OFFICIAL REPLY ON MY EMAIL-
here is exact message->

The avast! UI got hooked with your explorer.exe process you would need to reinstall the avast!.

1) Uninstall the version of avast! that's currently installed on your
computer using our uninstall utility, that can be downloaded from this
page:

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe

2) Use it in safe mode of Windows - in this mode you don't need to
disable the avast's self-defense module. Here you can learn how to
start Windows in safe mode:

http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

3) After using that tool, restart your computer.

4) Ensure there's no "alwil software" nor "avast software" folder in
C\Program Files and if it is, delete it

5) Download the latest version of avast! from this page:

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe

6) Install it with default values, i.e. do NOT change anything during
the installation process, and everything should be OK again. Finally,
insert your license file (if you're using the paid version) or
register the program (if you're using the free version). Your license
file can be sent again upon filling up this form:

http://www.avast.com/resend-license-paid.php

If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to contact me again.

Its that obvious. Thanks, I didn't have to do the reinstallation of the program with extra junks I don't need. Also, earlier avast didn't have such problem with the same setup configuration during installation as with the present one. So, it may be due to some coding issue and I hope they look into it further, assuming other users are affected the same way (which needs confirmation as only 3 of us had actively confirmed with another 15 votes).

avast v9.0.2011 R2 does not fixed this issue :(

The final release version 2014.9.0.2011 doesn't fix it either.
