Probably because your firewall is blocking ashMaiSv.exe.

What is your email program?
What is your OS - win98, XP, what?
What is your firewall?

I also have the same problem.  I can recieve and read email but not send.
I have tried to turn off everything to fix this but it still will not let me send.
How can you change the mail protection wizard??
It does not even show the mail protection wizard under avast menu or settings.
If I can't fix this I will have to delete avast.

Which is your operational system?
For Windows 98\Me, the Mail Protection Wizard is on Start Menu > avast! antivirus.
You can run it directly from avast folder: ashPopWz.exe
Do you use a firewall?

Men, you came here as for help but do not give us the data we need to help you  :P

Ok, when you say it won't let you send what error messages are displayed, please be as exact as possible.

When you send an email does your server require authentication?
If so have you ticked the box?

If the above doesn't resolve the issue, just for test purposes temporarily disable the windows firewall and try to send an email to yourself.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'test', Account: 'pop3.snip.net', Server: 'smtp.snip.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

On the previous occasion, were you sending an email with an attachment?
If so extending OE's server timeout delay will help.

While avast scans the outbound email OE thinks the server is idle and displays the timeout message.

Sure, your firewall should be on. Just you need to allow the following programs to connect:

ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner) (allow server rights)
ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service) (allow email rights)
ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
avast.setup (avast! Update executable)

speciallly, ashMaiSv.exe to send/recieve emails...  :)

Well since your using Windows Firewall:

Go to Control Panel>Click on Securtiy Center>click on the text "Windows Firewall">click on the "exception" tab> click on "add program">  Since it's not on the list, your gonna have to browse your PC for these:
ashWebSv
aswUpdSv
ashMaiSv
avast.setup
ashServ

avast.setup is a temporary file created while updating avast.
With 3rd party firewalls you should be able to manually start an update and answer yes to the connection.
Windows Firewall, even with the 'program asks for connection' option enabled, could allow it without asking...
But, I imagine you can update avast without problem right now, can't you?

I did all of the above and I can't still send email and I still get the same error  "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Subject 'test', Account: 'pop3.snip.net', Server: 'smtp.snip.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

Could ashMaiSv.exe connect the Internet?

Outlook error 0x800CCC0F is generally related to antivirus and firewall.
You can Google for 0x800CCC0F and you'll find a lot of troubleshooting.

Only if you don't care about what information leaves your computer.
Windows firewall only protects you from incoming attacks but doesn't protect you from
un-authorized information leaving your computer... like passwords and other vital information.
There are many good free firewall programs that protect you in both directions.
ZoneAlarm (http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html?part=zonealarm&subj=dlpage&tag=button) is just one of them.

this is what freedom tech support said to do "It looks like you are running programs that could cause interaction conflicts with Freedom. These programs are:

Avast Anti-Virus

It is generally not recommended to run more than one Internet/security programs on the same PC at any given time, as this leads to resource conflicts between the programs. This may critically interfere with Freedom's activity, as you have experienced.

You may remove these programs through the Windows Add/Remove Programs feature.

Also, please uninstall any unused or unnecessary programs from your computer to avoid  any other potential software conflicts." Should I do as the say?????

If that is what Freedom Tech Support said, you are well rid of them.

avast! isn't an internet/security security program, Windows doesn't recommend two firewalls and suggests you disable the XP one when you get a third party firewall; avast! doesn't recommend two resident AVs on your system (as do most other AV companies). This is correct because they are doing the same task and can cause conflict, but avast! isn't a firewall.

You do however, need outbound protection to stop any virus that may penetrate your defences phoning home with your personal details (accounts, usernames, passwords, etc.)

If Freedom is blocking ashMaiSv.exe and there is a way to allow access for this process in Freedom, then there would be no conflict, so you may be able to keep Freedom.

Zone Alarm free version as Bob said should fit the bill and has a relatively friendly User Interface for the novice firewall user.

Easy to say: my program is essential, antivirus not...
Nowadays, with Windows XP internal firewall, antivirus are far more necessary than a firewall.
Better, avast has two 'firewall features': NetShield and WebShield, making it even more essential.
Anyway, I don't think avast should 'conflict' with a firewall by definition...
