Title: Avast 8's Script Shield with IE 11 and FF 25
Post by: ky331 on November 20, 2013, 01:39:06 PM
Since upgrading IE from 10 to 11 (on Win7x64 Pro SP1), I've noticed that avast 8's Script Shield --- which used to be the most active of all my shields --- is no longer doing anything related to IE11.   Nor, for that matter, is it registering anything when FF 25.0.1 runs.

On another system (XP Pro SP3), there is likewise no Script Shield activity showing for FF 25.0.   But there *IS* Script Shield activity for IE8 --- meaning the Script Shield IS working (in general).

Can any users of avast 8 confirm or deny the same lack of Script Shield activity for IE 11 (Win 7) or FF 25 (XP or Win7)?

To anticipate questions, yes, I have IE+FF checked under Script Shield.   They are NOT excluded under behavior shield.   I have even tried a repair (on Win7), which changed nothing.

At this time, I am looking specifically for avast 8 confirmation or refutation of these results --- and if confirmed, a possible solution --- rather than responses advising me to upgrade to 2014.

I haven't got IE11 (don't use IE if I can avoid it), but isn't there an advanced protection feature in it (Edit: Internet Options > Security > Security Level - Enable Protected Mode, possibly [in IE10]), that may prevent the script shield from working.

Unfortunately I can't confirm this as:
1. I don't have avast 8 on either of my systems.
2. On my win7 netbook which can have IE11, the windows update to install IE11 failed, so I still have IE10 on that.

Thank you David.

Yes, IE offers both "regular" Protected Mode, as well as Enhanced Protected Mode.   "Regular" Protected Mode was on, Enhanced Protection was off.   I'm not at my avast systems now, so I'm not in a position to test your suggestion... but my recollection is that I had the identical settings under IE10, for which Avast 8's Script Shield was active.

Also, the matter of Protected Mode in IE should have no bearing on avast 8's interaction with FF 25.

Script shield compatibility is patched in with with each subsequent release.    Firefox 25 script shield was patched with Avast 9 I believe, you would need to look at the changelogs.  I don't think you have any choice but to upgrade, to at least Avast 9.  Then in the future when Mozilla breaks the scriptshield compatibility, the patch will again be only with the latest Avast.
