Title: Date of last scan
Post by: Walker on October 08, 2003, 08:20:06 PM
Technical... forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere  ;) , I couldn't find a direct reference to it  :)

Is it normal for the 'Date of last Scan' in the simple interface, to report 'not yet done', when I have... several times ?

Were they full scans of your local hard disks (at least I think that's what the item means in fact)?

Hi Igor,

Yes full 'thorough' + 'archive' of four hard drive partitions.

For info... this isn't new on the latest version. It's not been reporting the date of the scans for at least a couple of previous versions.

Is it just me?

Sorry for answering... In these case, post me an IM, ok?  ;)
It´s a strange behavior but igor said the truth: the last full scan date is displayed... See mine  ;)

Igor, why each update returns the language to English...
I like mine own language...

Why does Avast! persist with this stupid sentence 'Date of last Scan'?  Is it so hard to change that text to 'Date of last FULL scan'? >:(

Personally, I think that it should reflect the scan status of drives that have or have not been scanned in, say, the last week or so (maybe make it adjustable)  8)

Technical, your always welcome to answer my messages... your always informative  ;)

I'm sure Igor is a real truthfull guy. I am also sure that your scan date is reported (I believe you without a picture  :) )

This doesn't mean that it is working for me. Mine still reports 'Not yet done'

Maybe if you have tried to make an skin sometime you will know how just a word will bring a lot of 'space trouble'  ;)
Ok, I had never made a skin for avast! but I translated all the software and I know that just a word, a simple word, makes a lot of diference.
Anyway, this won´t be an excuse for the Walker trouble  ;)
I´ll do a new "full" scan and see what I get... Meantime, Walker, wait a little for the avast! team. The majority of them are not at the office today...

A data is just a date... You don´t get a virus!  ;D

Any more thoughts from the Avast team on this one please?

Hey avast! team, where are everybody...
Is this information (date and time of last scan) stored in Registry, ini file or at the Report file generated  :o ... ?

Again, my system is ok (the screen for last scan shows the real date and time...)  :'(

Are you saying that:

1. selecting the HDD icon
2. starting the scan
3. letting the scan to complete

does not update the Date of Last Scan?

Hi Vlk,

Yep exactly.

Avast runs through all four Hard Drive partitions (thorough+archive), Reports 'Scan completed'. But the SI always says Scan "Not yet done"... weird eh!?

Does the scan find at least one virus? Or does it complete without any results?

Hmm, please check if you have a TimeOfLastScan= value in the [Simple] section of <avastdir>\avast4.ini . Is it there? If so, what number does it equal to ?

Thanks

I think I've found something - could you please try replacing your version of ashSimpl.exe (the simple user interface) with this one: http://cat.asw.cz/~vlk/ashSimpl.exe , and (sorry ;)) re-running the local HDD scan? (Just to be sure, y'never know when these viruses show up, right... ;D)

Thanks

Vlk,

did exactly as suggested, re-run an 'all-drive-thorough-archive scan again and it's still the same.... Saying 'scan not done'

t'was 4.1.267.0, replaced with 4.1.274.0

here is the new log again...

Just for info.... in between these posts, Avast has reported that it's downloaded a new program and wanted a 're-start'.

However my downloads are set to 'Ask' and it didn't!. Also it is still showing 4.1.280

Has there been an update released to-day?.
Title: Re:Date of last scan

That's because of the ashSimpl.exe replacement. It has "repaired" itself. ;)

Please retry the test with a yet-another ashSimpl.exe version that I've just put to the same location (same URL). It should display some additional message boxes with diagnostic info.

Thanks

Ok Vlk,

did that again. reported scanned 10.3gb in 17mins, but still no scan date.

I got this window pop up 'before' the scan....

"H-D Scanning not set yet"

and this one 'after' the scan

"Scan OK, hdd=0, dwRet=0"

next  ::)

Another version is there.
Please retry. Shoot this is driving me crazy - it works like a charm here.

Hint: you don't have to run the whole scan, it's only necessary to START it (you can then immediately abort it) - I'm only interested in the stuff it tells you when starting the scan.

Please try quoting the info as exactly as possible,

And thanks for your help, really.

Please try quoting the info as exactly as possible,

Ok, Vlk....

'Click', right mouse button (with third finger on right hand) the Avast icon.

Select "Start Avast Antivirus" (left mouse button, first finger, right hand)

Stare intensely at monitor (using both eyes in perfect harmony) and up pops the 'Splash screen (memory check etc).

Then (one eye optional, as this is a smaller menu), the 'Error' box pops up. Reading (left to right - top to bottom) it says....

"    Error
Setting HDD scan to FALSE [1]
      OK
"

Next (and only after the above error box 'OK' button is clicked), the Simple User Interface pops up... well it actually sort of fades in gently.

Now (using a well co-ordinated combination of fingers and eyeballs), I choose the drives to scan. Followed quickly by setting the whole proccess in action... ie clicking on the -> (VCR look alike 'start' icon).

At this stage another error message pops up (much quicker than the SI) saying

" Error
  HDD scanning NOT set
   OK
"

Now I click 'OK' (cause I it's the only I've got) and away it goes merrily scanning the previously selected drive(s).

As per instructions earlier issued by my hero, I stop the scan. Another message pops up saying...

" Error
Setting HDD scan to FALSE [2]
  OK
"

Guess what... I click 'OK' (thought I'd try 'right mouse button, but this time with any random finger from my left hand... you never know, could make a difference, damn clever these software programmers). Lo and behold, up comes the final message, telling me...

" Error
  Scan OK, hdd=0, dwRet=42011
  OK
"

The scan still reports "Not done yet"

At this stage the operator (me) turns to gaze at something else, removes all hands and digits from the control devices and wanders off to have a cup of coffee (black no sugar) and a smoke (Super Kings Lights.... I'm not sure of the 'bar code' details).

 :) :) :) ;)

Ooops, nearly forgot... EAOA  ::)

Walker, thanks for completing this exercise. I think you deserve a karma boost, man (and I already know it's not the smite button, heh) ;)

Sorry for the delay, this is a busy evening (you know, some carpaccio & a bottle of wine, then a couple of mojito's in a coctail bar next door, followed by a bowling match)... ;)

Anyway, I think I'm getting it. You said:

No no no, I'm pretty sure. But you didn't quite get it. The thing is, the added message boxes were just displayed before starting the scan (so it was quite unnecessary to complete the scan every time) - but to upate the field, you indeed must not abort it. Got it?

I've right click on the icon in the systray, then chosen Start avast antivirus.

After memory test, click on the icon "Folder selection", and then check the box near C:. In selected paths, I have "C:\"
last thing I did click on OK.

After that, a screen telling me that scan local drives is set to off, scan removable media is set to off, scan selected folder is set to on. Then I click on the arrow ( start ).

I'm waiting for the result.

Fletch,

You did some groundwork by searching the forums.. well done.  :) But you probably picked the wrong thread.  ;)

If you have another look around, you might find reference to scanning in 'safe mode' etc.

I guess the file you 'can't see' is part of the windowns restore system and won't be shown unless you turn that option on in the view file types of explorer (not just the system/hidden files.. look further down the list).

Anyway, I HATE advising what to delete. If no one else joins in, can I suggest you start a NEW topic.

Good luck

Fletch, you probably has Windows ME. This folder will be empty if you 'disable' the System Restoration (I think there is an icon for System into Control Panel and the option for this disabling). Boot the computer. Enable System Restoration again. I think the files will gone away. Probably they are 'protected with a internal password, gived by Windows' and could not be accessed or scanned. It's quite safe to delete them by the way I have mentioned.
