Title: Must be getting old, still use SpywareBlaster!
Post by: polonus on December 10, 2013, 01:10:15 AM
Hi folks,

Yes, I still run that tool,SpywareBlaster, and update it on a regular basis.
Is this just because I am used to it  and cling to it like a relic from the past,
or does it still make any sense/purpose in my Internet life?
See: http://www.brightfort.com/spywareblaster.html
Please advise, me!

Do you know if the Brontok Worm is detected by Spyware Blaster? http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=142265.0

I personally dont like softwares like these, also Spybot Search and Destroy and SuperantiSpyware.

They dont have enough power for new malware.

You are not alone Pol. I do the same, but then again I am running Win Xp and once in a while IE 8. It would be different if I had Win 7 and IE 10. I have read a couple of topics in which the use of SpywareBlaster is mentioned as overkilled in that situstion. I really do not know if the scrips, cookies or bad URL found in SWBT data base are more different that the ones found in avast!, MBAM, or settings in FF or IE 10 or 11.

Hi iroq9555,

Well overkill or not, always check this SpywareBlaster tool or "full protection loaded". On a rare occasion I had to re-establish the full protection mode as some protection came disabled. This was when I remember it right when I had a close encounter with the Conduit pest that came as an undesirable bundled with some download from what I thought as a respectable download site. So SpywareBlaster should be checked after downloads for still carrying its full protection.
I also started with this tool as a form of added protection for "BigBlue", and as IE forms an integral part of the OS, that was the main reason for the initial install of the proggie. It sits silent there, does not need much maintenance and does not weigh heavy on the old cycles.
Just ike to hear your pro's and con's for this tool, folks? What for a browser like BrowzarSilver2000?

SWBT proteccion is aim mostly for IE, and though other browser are included, I do not know how wide or what it protects besides IE and FF.

I believe BrowzarSilver2000 is not included.

+1 I don't need SpywareBlaster with todays latest browsers as I have enough protection add-on for FF ;)

I am keeping my SpywareBlaster no mater what. The only way I am removing it, is if it starts acting up with my other security package. It may not be doing anything, but I feel better knowing it's there.

I still use SWB, too. Why not? There's a free version, it uses no resources, only requires an occasional check for updates, and has a few handy tools like a hosts file backup.

Thank you Simion for reporting,  ;)
I feel less lonely using SWB-5 now.
It also comes with a system snap shot function.

I remember that discussion and I think it was mentioned that not only with modern browsers, modern operating systems Vista and above SB was unnecessary.

Hi craigb,

Here is a supporter of your theory that SB is reactive and therefore futile -> http://forums.computeractive.co.uk/showthread.php?t=56857

Wrong, newer versions also protect firefox and google chrome!

Oh, yes and folks were running ScriptSentry at the time, that must have become also redundant?

Welcome to the club, polonus ... guess I'm getting old too, although that's no surprise to me.  Not when, if on my birthday they present me with a birthday cake with the traditional candle-per-year-plus one, everyone sings "You Light up My Life" rather than "Happy Birthday".   ;) ;D

I still use SWB too, mainly because the price is right and it doesn't (yet) conflict with any of my other protection.  It's quite different from Spyware Guard, which is/was resident, hadn't been updated in something like a decade, and even Javacool admits it should be considered as abandoned due to the same protection done better these days in other currently-available products including Win itself.
