Title: Can't boot computer, can't access safe mode, hangs on aswrvrt.sys
Post by: inktrashing on December 12, 2013, 06:08:07 PM
Windows 7, 64bit, using Avast. My computer's been having a bit of trouble lately, lagging when auto-rebooting and needing a forced shutdown before starting up normally.

Turned it on this morning and it's stuck in a system recovery loop. Booting up normally shows the windows logo then bluescreens. Attempting a startup recovery loads files, then suddenly goes to a black screen and freezes in that state (indefinitely, as far as I can tell).

Attempting to access the System Recovery menu results in the same black screen. Trying to boot in Safe Mode to access Command Prompts starts loading files, but hangs for about 30 seconds after loading aswrvrt.sys then goes to the same black screen.

Not sure what to do if I'm unable to access the Command Prompt. It looks like aswrvrt.sys is causing problems for other people as well; any suggestions, please?

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/) and save it to a flash drive.
In the next menu, use the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Command Prompt and press Enter.
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach it to your reply.

Unfortunately, trying to access the "Repair your computer" menu through the advanced bootup options / F8 on startup kicks me to the black screen and then freezes indefinitely.

Trying to bootup on safe mode with the command prompt bluescreens and kicks me back into the startup recovery loop.

Is there a different way to run FRST?

Hm, I'm currently on a rather old backup netbook, and don't have access to a disc drive. Is there any way to get something similar working from a flash drive or external hard drive? Sorry for the trouble.

Attempting to boot from a Windows 7 recovery disc burned to a flash drive as an .iso.

No problem, try any solution, just attach FRST log, because I cannot help you without it...

Still unable to run FRST. Trying to boot from a recovery disc .iso, but it's stuck on a black screen with a cursor frozen in the center and hasn't changed since. I'm at a loss for what else I can try ...

Only solution is to burn OTLPE somehow...

Managed to get an OTLPE disc and run FRST. Here's the log.

Open Command Prompt within OTLPE, and type the following

chkdsk c: /r

Re-run FRST and make fresh report.

chkdsk c: /r in Command Prompt returns "Cannot open volume for direct access."

Try FRST again...

Sorry, ran FRST again, file attached.

FRST do not read you system well. Try to restart OTLPE and to run chkdsk c: /r again. If c: isn't your system partition, try other letter (d, e)

Then attach fresh frst report...

Restarted OTLPE and ran chkdsk, which returned results. But running FRST, even taken from the flash drive onto the OTLPE desktop, gave the same report as already attached, and running chkdsk after that would give the same "Cannot open volume" error.

Am I running FRST wrong?

There is a glitch sometimes because OTLPE is based on Windows XP, and your system is Windows 7...

Do you have Windows 7 installation disk, so you can try to boot and access recovery console via disk?

Unfortunately, no, my computer only came with a separate partition if I want to reinstall Windows ...

Should I attempt running the Windows .iso from my flash drive again?

You can download trial version of Windows 7 from here, burn it to the cd or USB (using Rufus) and then access recovery console

Burnt that version of Windows 7 to a flash drive with Rufus, but attempting to boot from it loads the Windows files, shows the Windows startup logo and then freezes on a black screen. :(

Are you sure you burned it correctly, and that you selected USB to boot, because there should not freeze this way?
