Title: Fix for WebShield download issues
Post by: lukor on December 20, 2013, 07:59:24 PM

Edit:
A new version with the number 2014.9.0.2013 has been released yesterday (22nd Jan). All the problems that we were able to reproduce are fixed. In case you see more problems, please check that you are running the latest version first. Thanks a lot. And of course, we are very much interested to know about your experiences with 9.0.2013!
Thanks.
Lukas.

Hi guys,

several of you reported problems with downloads and general connectivity issues when WebShield is running. Especially on Windows 7 (SP0).

Luckily, we have been able to identify one of the possible causes and have prepared a patch for you. This patch is already online and should be downloaded automatically via the emergency updating mechanism.

Since we were unable to reproduce the same behavior in the test lab, my thanks go to LordAmi, who worked with us for a few days to isolate the issue and test all intermediate fixes. Thanks LordAmi!

We are not sure if it will solve all of the problems, but those of you who have experienced issues, please try it and report here.

The fix/patch is distributed on schedule and during certain events in the system (such as Logging in). It may take a while until all of you have the patch installed. In case you would like to make it quicker I recommend the following:

1) turn of WebShield from avast UI ( Settings / Active Protection )
2) restart the computer
3) open C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\Setup\Inf\x86 or x64 (based on your OS version) in explorer and wait a few minutes
4) shortly after login you should see a new file created here with the name aswstm.sys.sum
5) once you see it there, turn WebShield back on

To verify you have the patch applied, you may go to:

C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\Setup\Inf\x86 or .\x64

You should see:
aswstm.sys - file version: 9.0.2011.265
aswstm.sys.sum - file size: 223 bytes

The same file (aswstm.sys) should also be in your Windows\System32\Drivers folder (use 64bit explorer to check this on 64bit builds).

If these files are present and you have just started WebShield again, you should be already running the updated version.
I would be very happy to hear about your experience with the patched driver.

Lukas

Thanks!

1) turn of [sic] WebShield from avast UI ( Settings / Active Protection )
Lukas
Thanks, Lukas.  One minor addition -- when shutting down WebShield in step 1, you should probably use the "permanently" choice, since with any of the others all shields will be reactivated when rebooting, which will probably defeat the purpose of shutting it down in the first place.

I haven't noticed any major improvement, but I'd already done that "UseStreamFilter=0" work-around in the INI which did help considerably, and I suspect your new patch makes more or less the same change.

Nope, I'm missing a trick somewhere.
Turned off Webshield. Permanently
Rebooted
Found the ... Setup\Inf\x86 folder with contents in Windows Explorer
Waited "a few minutes".
Nothing has appeared to change, no sign of the file descriptions you have mentioned
Turned Webshield back on

What have I missed which is stopping the patch from being applied?

This came about as a result of my being suddenly unable to download Yahoo Mail attachments as outlined in a current / parallel thread.

Lukas, if we're not seeing these problems (or we're on Windows 8.1) I believe we do not have to patch right now, am I wrong?

Hello!

I did as described above.
Now I see the updated files.
Sadly I have still the same massive problems with connectivity.
After a short time the sites won't load anymore and the downloads stop.

I hope someone will fix this problem, so I don't have to look for another anti virus.
Before doing the update to 2014 I was very happy with avast!!

Hi Leo-Libero,
would you mind sharing more information, otherwise your hopes might easily be left unfulfilled.

Such as:
- your OS version
- does the problem disappear when WebShield is turned off?
- do you have problems since 2014 was released in October or only after the recent R2 update?

Thanks.

Hi Tech, the patch will eventually be applied automatically if you have the problems or not. :-)

Thanks for letting us know it's working ok for you.

For various reasons (not associated with Avast) I had to reinstall it last night.  It seems that the patch was installed during my setting up.  I was not having any problems with Avast and am still not.  All sweet:  :D

You should now turn it back on (UseStreamFilter) because this patch actually changes something in the driver to fix the issue. If the fix would have been so easy, it wouldn't have required testing at all :)

To date no change to my previous report - the file listings in my Windows XP Explorer are as before.
I then had the bright idea of disabling inbound mail scanning, but attachments still appear to fail at the pre-download scanning stage.
Further thought was to disable Avast completely - at least for as long as it takes to download my attachments - and install MS Security Essentials instead until the problem has been resolved.  But this is unknown territory for me [I just rely on Avast Free to provide the protection, no questions asked!].  Would it work and is it adviseable?
Title: Re: Fix for WebShield download issues

PS: My layman's understanding of a patch-fix is a file of some sort that is added to an existing program, via the internet, to get it to work better.  In this case there is a slight problem in that I can't download anything, so whatever I have or have not done it is hardly surprising that nothing has happened and the problem remains unpatched.
Would the / a solution be for Avast to send me the patch - as an attachment - which I could access via Yahoo Mail or via this forum from another PC, transfer onto a flash drive, and then install it onto this PC?

I voted for " No apparent download issues, before or after ". However, I've tried to recreate aswstm.sys following lukor's procedure without positive results. I've even waited 15 min, but the new file does not show. I will wait for the EmUpadate.

Does this patch ( procedure ) also apply for Windows XP_86 ?

Hi Lukor!

I am using Win7.
If Webshield is disabled the problem immediately disappears.
The problem came with the last update (don't know which) 2-3 days ago.
After installing avast! free 2014 yesterday I still had the same problem.
After editing the webshield.ini as told in the other thread today, everything seems to work fine again.
At least for the moment. ;-)

I hope you don't mind my english, because I'm from Germany!

Noted, thanks.  Interestingly, I just went to the INI to do that, and that whole [General] para was gone already -- I don't remember deleting it myself, but possibly the EmUpdate patch also put in a fresh INI.

Guess I need clarification at this point.  Should I put that para back in so it's explicit (with new value of 1, presumably), or as another poster noted, does it in effect default to on in the absence of any entry?  Thanks again, and best.

(Edit, afterthought) I'm still getting delays moving from page to page on the web, but the pages seem to load quickly enough once located -- seems more like a DNS traffic problem than anything to do with avast.

Hi, this must be completely unrelated issue, some of the users reported that switching back to old (but also tried and true) webshield with proxy helped them with the issue, which helped us identify the problem inside the new driver.

Have you tried enabling webshield scanning for "well known browsers only"?

Hi! I had this issue before patch and I have it now with a new (.265) aswstm.sys file in avast x86 folder. Problem is that aswstm.sys file in windows' drivers folder is the old one .263
Running Win7 32 SP0.

Replaced it manually in safe mode. Seems as problem is fixed now.

"Have you tried enabling webshield scanning for "well known browsers only"?

There are obviously a whole load of permutations of options within Settings Active Protection and up to now I have just gone along with the defaults.  My latest attempt had all the boxes ticked within Web Shield but in addition the one you suggested  "Scan traffic from well known browsers only" -> No change, nothing happens after I click on download attachment.  I could try blindly changing all the other boxes within Mail Shield and File System Shield, ending up with disabling 100% of Active Protection - at which point it would be more sensible to replace Avast with MS Security Essentials or AVG before I do any damage.  The block could of course be due to something completely unrelated, but that would be a coincidence.
Is there no one else reading this who uses Yahoo Mail together with 32-bit XP and who has, or has not had these download problems, and if so with what settings??? :'(

Was the same for me. But there does seem to be a solution.

As noted in the build 2011 thread, the issue seems to be running a managed HOSTS file. (I use the MVPS HOSTS file.) Once I temporarily renamed it, the new aswstm.sys showed up fairly quickly.

To Avast:

Please publicly let us know what domain(s) is the issue with Avast and a HOSTS file that is used to block ads, browsing analytics and so forth. This would give us the option of modifying our HOSTS file if we wish to do so. (Why you would need to track us for this is beyond me but clearly this is the issue at hand.)

I haven't had time to check this out properly - yet - but it could be that the download block, the way I've got the system set up, kicks in when I'm using Chrome, but not if I switch to IE.  Any logic in this, if true?

I am apparently a late adopter, I just got this problem today.  I upgraded my Avast! this afternoon but didn't use the computer immediately, hence I didn't relate my later-discovered dead internet connection with Avast until now.  (It would work for a couple minutes after each reboot so I managed to get a couple web searches done and figure out it was Avast.)

Because I upgraded "late" the "fixed" files must have installed right along with the upgrade itself for me (I'm assuming the version numbers of those two files pre-fix were different than the "fixed" files.) so I never had this upgrade version without them... and yet I have the problem. :/

So now that I know what's doing it I decided to test:  Web Shield Off = completely normal I even ran a speed test, full speed.   Turn Web Shield On, the speed test kills the internet connection instantly, it can't get past the ping portion before the connection is dead.  So my problem must be the Web Shield, even though I have the "fix."

I'm running Windows 7, BTW.  (64 bit if it helps)

Ahhh.  In the system folder it's 9.0.2011.263 not the .265 that's in the Avast folder.   Even though both files were modified at the same time, the system folder got the old file!

I've just 'upgraded' my partners laptop (running windows 7) with Avast 2014.9.,0 2011. Worked 100% before, but now won't connect properly using various browsers to the internet. I either get nothing ( just a 'connection' error), or page doesn't load properly.

I've now disabled 'web shield' and all working again. Is it my understanding that you will automatically apply a long term fix for this via 'automatic updates' rather than me just disabling a major part of the program?

Hello people!

Question and suggestions:
Since the avast 2014 is clearly rushed to the marked could someone make a tutorial or a link to revert to the older version of AVAST?
My browsing experience is a nightmare since i switched to the new version. And in the meantime i would suggest to not push out 2014 update automatically because you will loose a lot of people.

Recommending avast 2014 in this current version is not an option. Not a good thing for holidays.

Thanks!

Well i've tried "waiting for the patch" gave 3 tries around 5-8 minutes of waiting and nothing happened.
The file ends still with 2011.263

This is my system description:

It's WP7 without SP1 up to date
No firewall besides Windows Firewall

Is there a possibility to run this update via a manual patch? A bat file of sort? As i've seen all older version for avast from "safe" sites have been withdrawn. Or i am missing something? I know it's a standard issue developer 101 but eh...

I just recently got the pro version, i've been using the free one so far.

You can run this from an elevated (Administrator) command prompt:

schtasks /RUN /TN "avast! Emergency Update"

Console:

SUCCESS: Attempted to run the scheduled task "avast! Emergency Update""

Thank you very much for the help :) it seems my computer refuses the update.

I'll wait around for a few days and will see what happens. No change yet neither in system32 nor the path mentioned in the first post.

If you need some more info, and if it is a priority i'll look into the thread tomorrow.

Hi everybody, especially avast staff members.

I'm writing this with disabled avast cause when it's on I practically can not use internet.
My subscription ends within 10 days and I was just about to renew it like I always do when I saw that avast wants to do an update
- new program version available. I did it .... and the effects of it are visible, no doubt about it, clearly visible in a very negative way.
I'm using avast for more than 13 years and there were some small issues in these years as it happened with any other av program as well ,
but this, THIS is NO SMALL issue anymore.
Web browsing slowed down to zero, pages loading forever, sites not being able to open...
On Firefox & on Chrome , the same. When I disable avast and start internet again then everything is top as it used to be, sites & pages load within couple of seconds.
I switch avast back on and the same mess begins.

I DID everything what Lukas wrote in the 1st post of this subject , I also ran it from command prompt as Adm  and still not a single improvement.
aswstm.sys - 9.0.2011.265
aswstm.sys.sum - 233 bytes
However aswstm.sys  is indeed in Win\Sys32\Drivers folder , it is not in SysWOW64\Drivers folder. Is it correct ??

I googeld what oter ppl wrote in this subject and gave it a try, though didn't expect much :

Web Shield off - no result ( after reboot it would I guess, but then what's the point ? )

Enable Web scanning unchecked - no result
Intelligent script scanning unchecked - no result
Script scanning unchecked - no result
All unchecked - no result

Seems like modifying WebShield.ini could be the only solution for me right now. I see here that it DID work for some users.
Tell me which lines can I modify, please

WebShield.ini  on my pc :

 [Common]
ProviderEnabled=1
[WebScanner]
HttpRedirectPort=80,8080,8091,8081,8008,8888,3124,3127,3128
HttpRedirectPortUpdated1=1
ExcludedTypesList=image/gif;audio/*;video/*
WebScanning=1
WarnFileRep=0
ScanOnlyBrowsers=0
IntelligentStreamScanning=1
DoNotScanTrustedSites=1
NetworkShield=1
ScriptScaning=1

I hope this Web Shield issue can be fixed in couple of days... if not then I'll be forced to switch to the other av program and I honestly don't want to do that
cause as I wrote above - I'm an avast user/customer since the end of the 90's and I was ALWAYS very Satisfied with Your excellent av ( till the last update )

Thanks god I'm free untill january the 2nd ( Holiday vacations ) other way I couldn't spend so much time tryin' to fix this problem.

Forgive me for this very looong post - but in my defence - I have NEVER bother You with any questions in the past 14 years,
if there were some small issues I could always find a solution on the web and fix it by myself. This time it's different. I won't manage it alone.

Please help
Many thanks in advance,

Peter Jankowy from Holland

Hello Peter,

thanks for the report. If you are really running on the updated version of the driver (aswstm.sys, 265 - yes, in system32\drivers - you can tell easily it is the correct one by the fact, that there are many other driver (.sys) files there), I have no clue at the moment. I might guide you how to enable logging and we might try to find some hints in the logs, it all depends if you are willing to spend some time with it.

If not, I would suggest switching back to proxy-based WebShield, by the following change in the ini file:

websheld.ini

[General]
UseStreamFilter=0

And restarting.

Everything should run as before, even though not exactly the same as the whole period you are using avast. WebShield was introduced in avast 4.5, and later modified in behavior in 4.8, which is roughly 10 years ago, so switching WebShield off would bring you more into the golden years before that.

In case you would like to help finding the problem, and also for anyone other with same/different symptoms with 9.0.265, here are the logging settings that would generate some logs for us:

StreamFilter.ini:

[Common]
FileLogLevel=0
RecordInput=1

Restart the shield.
Then send us the log folder and nsf folder, both subfolders of the avast's programdata (C:\ProgramData\Avast Software\Avast\log, C:\ProgramData\Avast Software\Avast\nsf)

All edits in the INI files should be done with SelfDefense disabled, I recommend re-enabling it back and undoing the edits after your are finished with testing.

Even more logging can be obtained with DbgView, download from here: http://live.sysinternals.com/Dbgview.exe (http://live.sysinternals.com/Dbgview.exe)
Run as administrator, in the menu, select enable Kernel Capture, enable Verbose Kernel Output.
After the problem occurs (which should be easy), send us the output from the debugview window together with the logs.

BTW: if you see the following line, you are running the correct version:
AswStm.sys, ver. 9.0.2011, patch 3 - 'Lauri'
We'll continue testing of course. It is a new code, so actually we were expecting some problems, but it is also being tested in our QA lab at least since August 2013, so it is not rushed and it behaves great in our tests. So far it seems that the API we are using (WFP) is behaving differently in Windows 7 (no SP).

Anyone with similar problems on Windows 8?

Thanks a lot for all your reports and patience. Lukas.

Join the club, annoying, isn't it!! You'd think they'd fix it in an 'automatic update', but so far, nothing. Here's the thing,  I'm not a computer geek, I don't want to trial a 'patch', I just want the product, Avast,to work. If you're offering a 'patch', why can't you incorporate it in a normal update??

Hi,
thanks for the info.
The patch is already delivered automatically and is also a part of the installation process, I just wanted to have some feedback from the active users that come to the forums (a minority of our users).

I would really recommend switching back to proxy-based WebShield for you.

Edit websheld.ini in avast's programdata folder.

[General]
UseStreamFilter=0

Is there a ".exe" available to apply this patch from Avast? As I said, I'm not a geek, just an ordinary Joe who use to be able to connect 100% to the internet, but now can't since updating as you requested via pop ups & without switching off the WebShield protection...

Hello and good evening

I am having the same problem as peterNL with Avast Pro 2014.9.00.2011 version operating system Windows Seven SP1 Feerwall ZoneAlarm Pro Version 12.0.104.000.

It is the first time that an application is also poorly organized and update all versions.
It is wondering how create you and test the Beta version? Personally I was in version Free by then at least 13 years old I decided to pass in version Pro what was not my surprise and time spent to solve the problem of the super Avast which lost much of its superb if not resolved in the coming hours.
I wonder if the team of developers did not their resignations for not an anti virus but an Avast access except for the user.
Good through your Forum, I was able to get the previous version 2014.9.00.2006 with a download site infect my PC 5 Malwares.

You wish good reception for correction

Yours, gentlemen, ladies my remarks

Hi Lukas, Hi fellow avast users

Thank You very much for your response Lukas. I appreciate it very much but I've already switched back to 2014.9.0.2008.

Since couple of years I use Eaz-Fix Pro (RollBack Rx) and this program allows me to COMPLETELY restore my system
to the point I've made a snapshot of it. On contrary to the other so called "System Restore" programs (which are mostly very bad)
Eaz-Fix REALLY restores everything without any single issue. This program truely is a Life Saver...
So I restored my system to before avast program update and now I'm back with version 2014.9.0.2008.

At least now I can use the net again. You know, this version also slows down the internet browsing
(my girlfried warned me about it weeks ago but I didn't listen to her and I didn't now right then that it is due to avast )
but I can live with this kind of slow down. With the newest version 2014.9.0.2011 I can't use the internet at all !!!

I will stay with 2014.9.0.2008 untill You release another program update which will fix these WebShield issues permanently.
I hope it will happen soon. I'll check this forum frequently to see to it & to read how the other users respond to it.

Please, if You could only confirm to me that ver. xxxxx2008 still protects me as well  as xxxxx2011 would,
then I'll be at peace with it and wait for the correct program update.

You see, since many many years I use avast side by side with Zone Alarm Pro Firewall and they're working toegether perfectly, not a single issue.
Also Win Partol, Sandboxie, Keyscrambler & of course Eaz-fix. I never had any conflicts among these programs and I intend to keep it this way.
That's one of the reasons why I want to stay with avast, the others are that avast served me SO WELL since so many years and now with this FIRST big issue
I just couldn't turn my back on it. :-)

Again, Thank You for your quick response Lukas,

Happy New Year's Eve & All the Best in the New Year to You and to Whole Staff of avast
and to You ALL - FELLOW avast users

Peter Jankowy from Holland

P.S. Please don't forget  - (if You could only confirm to me that ver. xxxxx2008 still protects me as well  as xxxxx2011)

Hello Lukas,

I'm back after a few days. Still no "automatic update to the new version". Emergency Update folder is empty.

I have a couple of questions:
Obsolete: 1) If i do a clean wipe of avast i have found some topics on the issue. Will i have the new magival *.265 sys version?

2) Did you know that youtube won't play at all because of the web shield? I presume it has something to do with the fact that you are not letting the pop-up ads show up.

Obsolete: 3) Except 1 there is no real solution to the problem ? Force downloading the patch etc and retrying from cmd to force lunch it?

4) Everybody is talking about *.ini files where are they located? i searched for them in the Avast Instalation folder with TCM(Total commander) no webshield ini at all...

Happy New Year! and maybe as a suggestion you could pull SO info from the user base to run at least one testbed with computers with OS share higher then 10% or some arbitrary threshold.

Update: i just re-ran my Avast Pro instalation from your website :) The irony was that i had to disable avast completely. Finally updated to *.265 i'll come back with feedback!

Happy New Year.

Szilu, if your last comment was supposed to suggest we are not testing with Windows 7 SP0 or Windows 7 SP1, you are wrong, we test with all operating systems and service pack combinations. Anyway thanks for the suggestion. As soon as any new OS version comes up with >10% user share, we will of course start testing on that one as well. Do you have any specific OS version in mind? We also test on unreleased versions, such as intermediate builds of Windows 8 and 8.1.

Ad 2) we do NOT block any pop-ups from WebShield. What made you think WebShied blocks any popups?

Ad 3) you can download the patch from here: http://public.avast.com/~rypacek/patches/aswstm.9.0.2011.265.zip (http://public.avast.com/~rypacek/patches/aswstm.9.0.2011.265.zip)

Ad 1) yes, that's how it should work and does on thousands of installations.

Lukas.

Hello Lukas,

Well basically those are java scripts or so i think, when i disabled the Web Shield they worked  :o i presumed you scan them. I'm an embedded developer so my assumptions were wrong.

As in the post above with the new version i can watch youtube videos as well. Will come back soon with feedback.

Still Problems accessing Router GUI with Avast installed, tried turning off webshield, tried setting for the proxy version, may do a clean install of it one more time, and try again...

Could be Router issue as well, at&t gateway Netgear 7550N

Disable Browser AOS ext/add ons
Temporarily turn off all shields (right click Avast task bar icon, select avast shields control, turn off for 10 minutes).
Start browser
Try to access router - if you can then the problem is NOT the router.
Right click  Avast task bar icon and turn shields back on.

Currently still no access after doing the above steps--eventually comes up with page cannot be displayed, am able to Ping the Router though, so some reason just can't get the GUI up, I think will restart it later on, and I think will be fine after that I hope.

Hi!

Actually for me this latest 2014.9.0.2011 build introduces a problem, probably Webshield related.
My OS is Windows 8.0 Pro N, 64bit.

Since this latest Avast upgrade I have problems to login to my router webgui at http://192.168.0.1/ (Router is TP-Link WR842ND with Gargoyle  1.5.11 firmware.

Issue: in Firefox 26.0, if I go to http://192.168.0.1 address, then Firefox puts this message:
Quote
Server: httpd_gargoyle/1.0 14mar2008
Date: Mon, 30 Dec 2013 20:48:38 GMT
Expires: Mon, 30 Dec 2013 20:48:38 GMT
HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
Location: login.sh
HTTP/1.0 302 Found

If I directly enter the webGUI addresses, like "http://192.168.0.1/overview.sh", then it comes up in Firefox and I can browse in menu. if I click Logout, then same error comes up. If I enter "http://192.168.0.1/login.sh", then page also comes up, but after filling the password and sending, error raises.

In Internet Explorer 10.0, there is no such error message, however in IE the logout doesn't work either, the browser remains logged in.

It seems some cookie expiration problem, but it's definitely related to Avast Free Antivirus, because if I disable Avast then issue is perfectly gone.

My dll version:
aswstm.sys - file version: 9.0.2011.265
aswstm.sys.sum - file size: 223 bytes

Could you check this issue in latest 9.0.2011 build?

Thanks a lot

I just got my computer back from the factory completely wiped due to a problem with the hard drive.  When I redownloaded Avast on 12/28 I downloaded PRO since you had a sale and I was so happy with the free software up until I sent my computer away at the beginning of December.  Now many features of websites no longer work, and my internet connection is constantly interrupted when other devices are not affected (ie, it's not the internet but my computer).  Before I downloaded Avast, the computer worked just fine and all the features functioned.  I've tried turning off the web shield and it did not work.  I followed the directions and found the aswstm.sys file, but have to express the frustration of the previous poster.  I'm not a computer geek. You guys are speaking things that make little to no sense to me. I don't understand your directions on the webshield.ini  Basically I just either want it to work with little effort from me, or to get a refund and go with something else. I have a good and easy av so I don't have to be a computer geek.

Sorry, I forgot something...  I currently have the web shield disabled and still am having issues especially with social media sites and my college email.

My system is windows 8.  I don't even know how to tell you much more than that without you walking me through it.

Please don't take my frustration personally, it isn't meant that way.  But the help just left me more confused

I have the same problem on W8.1
Ever since I updated the version on the 31st of December, I wasn't able to connect to internet in any program (browser or other connecting to internet).
The issue was there until I turned off the web shield (had a bit of a nightmare figuring out the problem!) and then everything went back in order, with the shield off!
No changes with the patch. And don't want to mess around any more with that problem.

I never experienced a single problem with Avast before.
Now it's becoming quite annoying since I can't browse with the Avast on...

Is there any solution, a possible update fixing the problem?
Is there a possibility to get back to another version of Avast? And how to do so?

Browsers: Chrome (31.0.1650.63 m) and Firefox (26.0)
System: Windows 8.1 64 bits
Avast Free antivirus 2014.9.0.2011

@    Bolerom
Given that the patch doesn't work (which was more related to downloading problems, not connection), it is possible that your issue could be avast being blocked. When the program is updated the executable files change and on occasion your firewall will block these changed processes.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Hi guys,

several of you reported problems with downloads and general connectivity issues when WebShield is running.

Lukas

I have already verified that the files exist in both locations but I am still unable to access the internet. I have never had this issue before when updating avast antivirus free. I just updated it this morning and immediately after I am unable to access the internet unless I disable the webshield. Please come out with a new patch or fix or workaround other than disabling the avast web shield.

I am also experiencing similar problems since the update to 2014.9.0.2011
Web shield on:
downloads stop at 99% and never finish, sometimes reports that the publisher cannot be verified.
many website require that I refresh the browser several times to get the site to load.
Web shield off:
no problems.
I have tried the fix and I have the correct version of the .sys file but the .sum is only 78 bytes

The .sum file is like a checksum file so that the fix version aswstm.sys isn't replaced by avast's integrity checking, but I don't know why yours is only 78 bytes.

Is the aswstm.sys version number and file version the same as previously mentioned aswstm.sys - file version: 9.0.2011.265 ?

I am also having problems

I have the correct aswstm.sys 9.0.2001.265 version in the windows/system32/drivers folder

Fire Fox and IE pages often have to be refreshed in order to load, and downloads dont finish when the web shields are on (avast and MBAM would not update either with the web shields on)

This is on Windows 7

It also only seems to be the web shield as i can play online games with no problem

(edit) after uninstalling zone alarm firewall and installing the new version, the situation seems to have resolved itsself (still early). So it may have been a problem with Avast 9.0.2011 and a older version of Zone Alarm

I purchased the Avast premium yesterday.  I have Windows 8.1. I downloaded and installed ok but now I have many web pages I normally use on a daily basis that freeze, or drop, or loose connective all together.  I have used the free version of avast without the shield for over 2 years and did not have any problem.  Is there a conflict between windows 8.1 and avast? I am on a 38mb cable internet connection.

Since the 2014 update I've had the same problem, (videos on youtube barely loading and freezing, downloads not working etc.).
At the time I jumped to this forum to see if others had the same problem but back then I didn't have much luck finding a solution.
On my main pc I'm using the following:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

I tried the update on my laptop which uses Win 8.1 Pro 64bit and had 0 problems at all.
Although there I'm using the free edition unlike the Internet Security edition I use on my main PC.

Without the information or even trying to find out that the culprit was the Webshield, I uninstalled Avast completely and installed a previous version (2011. etc., the one from october 2013?). It worked fine after that.
Today I tried to see if there was any progress and updated to the 2014 version and, alas, the problems were back. Then I checked the forums again and found this post.
While I found out that Webshield is indeed guilty of the problems, I am still missing a file. I have all the correct ones in the program files folders, but in the windows drivers folders I am missing the .sum file. Waiting didn't help.

I did find the websheld.ini file (which was in a hidden folder, causing not to be found with the search option at first) and added the line of code. Restarting after that helped, everything was fine again.

Hi Lukas

Time goes by , still NO improvementy. I see some ppl say we should adjust this & that , so avast WILL work ... well , it's a BS and You know it as well as I do.
I'm still on ..9.0.2008 .   You (avast I mean) won't manage to solve this issue within weeks ( maybe even months ) .. am I right Lukas ?  my oh my .... I want to stay with avast but look at this mess with prgm2014 version..
ARE YOU (avast) close to fixing, repairing this bloody bug or not ??!! Can You just give us - customers - an honest answer

Not sure if my problem is webshield or Avast Free Version 9.0.2011 issue.  Have Win XP Pro and IE8.  After days of comparing three of my machines (same os/ie, where one works and the other two don't), the only difference is my "good" machine has vers 9.0.2008.

As with others who have posted in this thread, I am a long-time user and avid fan of Avast.  But with the advent of 2014 software, I've experienced numerous, time-consuming problems, from installation to execution.  This is killing me!  I, too, would like a link to some previous versions.

Anyhoot, try this on a WinXP, IE8, AvastFree 2014.9.0.2011 cornputer:  go to my bank's website - https://www.bankatunion.com/home/home.  Then under Business Banking, click Login.  Then type anything into the three fields (co id, user id, user pw) and click Log  In.  I get a Done or Error in the bottom left of the IE window.  You should get a new page saying your credentials are bad (which I do with vers .2008).

I hope this repeatable error will help you solve my problem.  Thanks!

I forgot to post that when you get to the screen with the three fields and F5-Refresh the screen before entering/clicking, it seems to work.  Maybe this will help with diagnosis.

Hi fssbilk, since you are using Windows XP, your problem is completely unrelated to this "new" webshield and new problems - this technology is deployed on Windows 7+ only.

Hi Peter Jankowy to Holland, I have searched the list of possibly explanations of the BS acronym and found quite a few that are not offensive! Britney Spears? http://www.acronymfinder.com/BS.html

Regarding the Webshield problems (unrelated to BS): we have been able to identify serveral issues in the code the process the buffers from the network. Unlike the already mentioned fix (aswstm.sys driver patch mentioned above) they all seem to be rather special cases, still bugs but not something that apparent as the fix we have already released (just a few days after the initial 2011 release). Still, these changes will definitely help and as such we are going to release them soon for public testing, probably in the form of a patched aswStreamFilter.dll for volunteers. This afternoon we have indentified and fixed another problem that might help users reporting access issues when opening their router pages. I'll post a link to the patched aswStreamFilter.dll for volunteers tomorrow.

Switching off the new code (UseStreamFilter=0 in the WebShield.ini) is also a "fix", how to avoid problems with the new HTTP filter, of course, no Britney in that. As the old code is functionally equivalent to the new one, in the security respect, this is a supported solution and anyone with problems, is encouraged to switch to the proxy mode.

I understand that some are not skilled enough to edit a text file using notepad and don't like to do that in their instalations, therefore we are going to release all the mentioned changes soon, either as an EmergencyUpdate, but more probably as a standard update. This is about to happen within one or two weeks.

Hi Lukas

Thanks for posting and letting us know about the bug fixing which is going on. Do you happen to know whehter the fixes will include Avast 2014 currently killing the Squeezeplay Logitech Media client issue (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=144058.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=144058.0))?

As mentioned in this thread, the UseStreamFilter fix doesn't seem to work and various SP users have reported it showing that it's a general problem, not a machine-specific one. Whilst, as discussed, there is a workaround, having to switch off the webshield to allow SP to connect to our local media servers, doesn't exactly fill one with confidence!

Best wishes

Hi, thanks for the note. I missed this one and I am not sure we have already tested with Squeezebox. Let me check this tomorrow.
Lukas.

BTW: I've promissed and updated aswStreamFilter.dll for testing. It's here: http://public.avast.com/~rypacek/patches/aswstreamfilter.269.zip
This should be unpacked into Avast program folder (with avast! Antivirus service stopped, self-defense off) and restart. I'll post here an update with eaiser installer/patcher shortly.

I have had occasional random issues with WebShield before but today it went completely mad. Youtube video streaming always die after the initial pre-fetch, file downloads are randomly aborted or corrupted, and once in a while loading simple homepages fail (the latter usually works when retrying).

When I disable WebShield everything works perfectly.
I have checked that the patch is applied.
I did the WebShield.ini hack and rebooted but the issue still remains.

I am running Windows 8.1 x64 with Avast 2014.9.0.2011.

I'll disable WebShield for now...

New to the forum so forgive me if I am in the wrong place to post this. I have not seen download problems with the new version, but I have seen problems where javascript is involved. At TD Ameritrade after I log in the site runs a flash app for viewing trading and prices. This halfway loads with no error message on the page. Refresh does not help.

For another site where I am a member and have to login then also login to the forum, I have to refresh each login page to get the script to run correctly. When I enter data into the forum login, I get a message at submit that tells me no data has been entered, refresh do it again and I am in. Once in, when I try to post, normally a box opens up where several options like here are displayed (BTW, no problem on this forum so far.) A refresh and place the cursor in the reply box generates the proper screen and I can enter my post. BTW, the first attempt I can see I am entering data like the login, but it is a faded gray and not the bolder black color and I can not submit for no data is entered again.

I know this has something to do with Avast because if I do an uninstall/repair when Avast has finished installing/repairing and before I answer any questions to turn on things, all works fine. It took me awhile to figure out it was Avast.

Great product in the past, I hope you can get this fixed. Yes I have followed the instructions to apply previous fix and it is there, but my problem is still there. I am running W7-64 on a Asus Maximum V Formula mb and i7-3770k processor with 8gb memory.

BBQSteve,

does the problem disappear if you turn the WebShield off?

If yes, could you, please, try to disable Script scanning, in the WebShield settings main page? This will help us diagnose which part of the shield is responsible - Web content scanner or sripting engine part.

Thanks,
Lukas.

Hi Lukas

Thanks for Your response. I mean it. Fair enough to me, absolutely :
"therefore we are going to release all the mentioned changes soon, either as an EmergencyUpdate,
but more probably as a standard update. This is about to happen within one or two weeks."

No need for irony though ( about me using BS ) , bare in mind that your customers have right to be irritated due to this Web Shield bug.
As I've written before , I'm your customer since a very looong time.
Also, as You can surely recall , I've made my share of attempts trying to fix this issue - my 1st post in here -  and I'm all but new to pc
(I've tested more than 200 security/optimization/diagnostic programs in last 15 years) .
Problem is - I have no time right now to try and look... I work at one of the 4 Worldwide Biggest companies (in our business) & I have ENOUGH
BS every day, believe me Lukas... Our Customers MUST always be satisfied, and we succeed in 98,9 % , so it's Not Bad Worldwide.
Lukas , at my work I have daily contact with ppl worldwide & there are still many, many of them who don't realize
that their net slow down is caused by avast prgrm update but sooner or later they will ,
many ppl think they got some internet issues cause their partners did or downloaded something which slows down the net.
It sounds stupid, I know, but a lot of ppl think that way. Today I've heard it from Poland, Germany, US ( 4x ) , Australia ( 2x) , Italy and some other I forgot...
How do I know it ?
Well , these are my regular clients and I asked  them about it ( after some of them earlier started to complain about slow net )

BTW , I renewed my avast subscription as I said I will . You - avast - may have a little drawback right now with this WebShield issue
but I still think & say : There is absolutely NO better one than avast , some may be quite equal but no other is better.

With best regards to You & whole avast team ( no irony here Lukas :-) )

Have installed aswstreamfilter.dll (9.0.2194.269) and associated aswstreamfilter.dll.sum (and also removed the "UseStreamFilter=0" from the .ini file)
Early days yet, but it seems to be working without any issues on Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit, and Avast 2014.9.0.2011 Free.

Hi fssbilk, since you are using Windows XP, your problem is completely unrelated to this "new" webshield and new problems - this technology is deployed on Windows 7+ only.

lukor, thanks for the response.  Since this is apparently not a WebShield issue, I'll repost this problem under 2014 vers 2011 thread.  Have you tried to recreate this particular problem?

Have been reading this correspondence from the start with increasing confusion - I am a 77 year old NON whiz kid on PCs. I have Desktop XP SP3 and Laptop Windows 7 and yesterday I installed  Avast Free 2014 on both. My broadband speed on the XP machine then almost halved from approx. 40Mbp to around 20Mbp. When I turned off Web Shield my speed returned to normal.
(The Windows 7 machine seemed to suffer no harmful effects). I tried the 'patch' solution suggested at the beginning but, as others have reported, the new files did not appear - yet now I have turned on Web Shield again and my download speed has returned to its normal 40!! At this point I am a candidate for a Home for the Bewildered!
May I finish with a suggestion for those posting - as a learned professor of mine once said "always try to speak to the lowest common denominator in your audience!

Hi Tobur, nothing mentioned in this thread, patches or problems being described here is relevant to Windows XP installations. The code we are evaluating and possibly patching is not running on Windows Xp and is not even installed. The patches are not delivered on Windows XP.

We have created this whole new code for analyzing web traffic to improve the old one and remove compatibility and performance problems. I am glad to hear it works as it should for you (on your Windows 7 system)

Thanks for the clear reply. I am still mystified by the fact that my download speed on XP was halved after installing Avast until I turned off Web Shield when it then returned to normal. This would indicate that Web Shield was the culprit - but now I have turned on Web Shield again  and my speed is back to normal -  nearly 40Mbp.
Curiouser and curiouser!!

Tried this Patch on 8.1 Pro x64 to solve issue I had with IE 11 freezing at times, ended up messing up all my Modern Windows 8 Apps, so once fixed that with a system restore, decided to leave patch alone this time, and left browser protection out, finally solved my green videos it appears, before once in a while green video would be in the player of web videos and Desktop videos and Modern app video playback problems.     Since leaving browser protection out--working perfectly fine now.

So Happy with Avast now, and sticking with it

Hi bikemanAMD, when talking about "browser protection", do you mean WebShield or "avast! Online Security" browser plugin?
Thanks.

Avast online security browser plugin I believe was the cause, if this is unrelated to webshield, then my mistake for posting it in here

Did try the webshield stream filter patch manually, but seemed to mess up my Modern Windows 8.1 Pro x64bit apps on start screen, but got those fixed by reinstalling all of them.    Router login though is working fine now..so I guess most of my issues solved, no more "Green" video playback screens anywhere now--so that is a huge relief, I even did a system refresh to try and solve that last week

I have a friend with windows 7 x64 sp1, IE 11, and avast 2014.9.0.2011 and it's not so much a download issue but some pages such as google.com dont come up. No error of any kind, it just stays on the same page or a blank page. Yahoo.com works fine and firefox/chrome work fine. I dont know if this problem is related but it started right after she upgraded from 2014.9.0.2006 yesterday. I did a system restore back to yesterday before the upgrade and the problem persisted.

Oh, and the patch didn't work.

An additional note, I ran IE as admin with no addons and it works. Non admin with no addons and it doesn't work.

My problem turned out to be an IE problem which I fixed by doing a reset. I'm not sure what caused the problem but I think it starting after the avast upgrade might have been coincidence.

On Win 7 Home Premium SP1 French, Firefox 26, FlashPlayer plugin 11.9.900.170, I have big issues (video sites, ADSL rate test, ...) after having updated Avast (Free, French) from 2013.8.0.1504 to 2014.9.0.2011.
All become Ok, if I desactivate the WebShield.

So, I have made the following actions :

1) Adding 2 new files (aswstm.sys 9.0.2011.265, and aswstm.sys.sum), made automatically by Avast, according Lucas post, dated 20 Dec 2013
 No results

2) Activating "Scan the traffic from known browser only" in WebShield.
No results; So I turned back desactivating this line.

3) Implementing the Lucas patch (post, dated 31 Dec 2013) : replacing the 2 files (aswStreamFilter.dll, and aswStreamFilter.dll.sum) by the new files provided by Lucas.
I have let the 2 new files aswstm.sys, aswstm.sys.sum
A little improvment; Before : no videos seen, after : videos seen during 20-30 s, then freeze.

4) Implementing the change of WebShield.ini (adding UseStreamFilter=0), in the 2 identical files WebShield.ini located in C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5 and C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5 (I did not change the WebShield.ini file, smaller and dated 8 May 2011, located in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\DATA).
I have kept the modifications made in 1) and 3)
All is Ok, in "old fashion" Avast mode according Lucas, but the most important is to have a WebShield activated.

I hope an update of Avast will rapidly solve the problem.

Thanks to everybody in this forum.

Interesting, i got this patch automatically. Haven't done anything... :)

Same here with me.  Remember when there was an issue with the web shield and a few members or tech support suggested to turn off the web shield, which I did and the problems went away.  After reading this thread, I went back to see if the web shield was turned back on and it was.  Thank goodness, as I rather not mess around with anything on Avast and get it all messed up.  Thank YOU for fixing the web shield issue.

I have had issues uploading videos to dmcloud and sproutvideo. The upload speed would show as being 80/90GB/s, After troubleshooting with web-shield i discovered the problem was with Avast's Active Protection System. If i try to disable the shield for test it often crashes the whole Anti-Virus Program/UI!

I have updated my A/V to 9.0.2012 however this has caused me more problems with being unable to disable the web shield. The latest update hasent improved upload speeds with the only way of fixing this is to disable the web shield.

This has been my first real issue with Avast's A/V system...

I have installed the beta version (2014.9.0.2012), on the 2014.9.0.2011 version (no fresh install), forgotting to put off the WebShield.ini change (UseStreamFilter=0) I had made.
All was Ok, but when I put off the WebShield.ini change, all went back wrong.

So the beta version (2014.9.0.2012) gives me no results, and now I don't know what to do.

I must say that I have not really understood what are the consequences of having the WebShield.ini change implemented (efficiency of the Web Shield).
So, more clearly, what is the best for me, on a efficiency/performance point of view :
  - to use V9 with the WebShield.ini change
  - to use the latest V8

If the V8 solution is better, could Lucas give us a link to download the latest V8 (a true Avast file, not a file on others site with malwares).

MPac please do a clean install using the avast clean tool and a fresh copy of the new beta which can be obtained here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=144768.0

Once you have re-installed there should be no need to modify the webshield ini settings.

Installed the test fix (R2 2012?) on W7/Pro with 3rd gen i7 box.
Still no Google Earth, and I'm suspicious that the web problems still not fixed - Gmail taking a long time to load on Chrome,
taking same slower than normal time on Firefox.
Incidentally went to McAfee on my 1st gen i7 Toshiba laptop. Earth still not working with McAfee up and avast shields disabled. Then uninstalled
avast and all is ok.
Please don't make me do this on my main rig! Fix it!

Hi, if stopping the shield does not help, it's not relevant to this webshield issue. I'll move it to a separate thread ~iainclarke.

I have made a fresh install of the beta version (2014.9.0.2012), with avastclear.exe in safe mode.
No results.
All become back Ok when I desactivate the web shield (in parameters/Active Protection) or when I implement the WebShield.ini change (add of [General] et UseStreamFilter=0).

So the questions I asked on 17 Jan 14 is still pending : waiting a corrective version, what is the best for me, on a efficiency/performance point of view :
  - to use V9 (2014.9.0.2012) with the web shield desactivated (in parameters/Active Protection)
  - to use V9 (2014.9.0.2012) with the WebShield.ini change
  - or to use the latest V8 (to be provide by Avast team)

Any new updates? Still having to disable web shield whenever I download a file, doesn't matter the size - ie: just installed an Adobe Flash Player update that was a mere 1 mb. It would not download unless Web Shield was disabled.

I am also still unable to view YouTube videos unless Web Shield's disabled (freezes within the first few seconds).

Everything works perfectly when Web Shield is disabled.

I've been patient, but I'm starting to think these issues are borderline irresponsible. It's approaching a month now and these issues are an inconvenience on a daily basis, multiple times a day. I've been using Avast since 2009, and have never encountered a problem as browser-breaking as this one until this 2014 edition.

Hmm, so you are indeed running the latest version. So, no, there hasn't been any updates since yesterday when 2013 was released. We were so far under the impression that the problems were fixed. What is your OS version?

Could you, please, switch to the proxy?

Webshield.ini

add the following two lines;
[General]
UseStreamFilter=0

- restart after the edit, or at least restart the "avast! antivirus" service
- edit the ini files with notepad running as administrator

Strange, I've been testing some YouTube videos, and now and sometime they play, and sometimes they freeze, which is an improvement. Crossing my fingers the problem will resolve itself over the next few days.

I also test downloaded another file - a larger one, 69.3 mb from the Blender site (http://www.blender.org/).
Downloading with Web Shield on - it downloads, but Windows says the file is corrupt.
Downloading with Web Shield off - no problems.

If I switch to the proxy, will I need to manually turn it off for future Avast version updates?

Thanks for your support.

Edit: My OS is Windows 7 Professional.

Lucern,
this is something definitely new, not a known bug to us.

Could you harvest some logs for us?
To do that, please create StreamFilter.ini in the avast! program data folder with the following content:

[Common]
FileLogLevel=0
RecordInput=1
RecordOutput=1

-restart the shield afterwards
-you might need to edit the file with notepad running under administrator, otherwise self-defense will prevent you from editing it.
-after the problem appears, could you
   -stop the shield
-send us the C:\Programdata\Avast Software\Avast\Log folder
-send us the C:\Programdata\Avast Software\Avast\nsf folder

Thanks. Lukas.

I remember reading in earlier pages of this thread other users describing the same bug - downloads would hang at 99%. If they finish (sometimes they will simply time out), they are corrupt. I've been experiencing the same issue since the beginning of the installation of the 2014 version of Avast in December.

I did as you said, added the lines to the StreamFilter.ini file and recreated the problem - but the Log and nsf folders were not created, so no logs were created. Is there another step I need to do?

Edit: I also restarted the Web Shield after making the edits to the StreamFilter.ini file before recreating the problem, and stopped it afterward.

If you could not find the log folder, you are probably looking into a wrong place. The log folder is always there.

C:\Programdata\Avast Software\Avast\Log

C:\Programdata\Avast Software\Avast\Nsf

Of course, you must be running streamfilter, you can verify that by checking if aswstm driver is running, such as:

SC QUERY aswstm

You should also stop the webshield after you have re-created the problem - so that the logs gets written to the disk, but the files (with zero length though) should be visible on the disk as soon as the shield starts.

Thanks for the tip, Lord Ami. It was a hidden folder, and selecting the option to show all folders displayed it.

I've attached the StreamFiler.log file from the log folder. The forum will not let me attach files from the nsf folder. I tried to zip the entire folders but the forum will also not let me attach zip files.
Let me know if I did this right or not.

Lucern,
we would need the complete nsf folder contents. You can upload the zip file to your anonymous FTP server here:

ftp.avast.com/incoming

Or mail it to my email address (its rypacek {at} avast {dot} com)

You can also use this public file depot:

I went thru that too. nsf and other folders are protected by avast! I believe, so in order to use the contents, you can also copy them to Desktop for example :)
But FTP is the best choice I'd say ^_^

//
My bad. I didn't completely read the sentences. Yes, forum rules may restrict attachments. I read that the folder didn't allow you to use the files ::)

@Lord Ami

It's a feature of the Avast forum, not with permissions on my local machine. The Avast forum only allows certain file extensions to be attached. .log is one of them, but the two file extensions in the nsf folder, .dat and .xml, are not allowed extensions to be uploaded to the Avast forum.

Hi Lucern,
sadly I am not able to locate the files on the FTP. I've found a folder NSF, but it was empty. We really have to make this whole process somewhat easier, it was even hard for me to locate the server's internal name here.

Could you give it a last chance and try to upload the NSF folder zipped into one archive. I believe the security policy on the FTP prevents you from seeing anything you create - so I guess even the folder NSF is actually not visible to your FTP client and therefore it might fail to store the files there. ZIP file should solve this.

Sorry for the hassle.
Lukas.

There is just one record about a connection being made, but no traffic (data) were recorded. Can you please confirm, that during the period the log was on you have tried to download the problematic file and that the download failed?

Ok I'm having an issue that started after version 9.0.2008 with Internet Download Manager and the web shield. If I use version 9.0.2008 or lower I have no problem at all, but since I switched to 9.0.2011 and even 9.0.2013 at the moment the problem won't go away. Every time I download a file I get a message stating my download is corrupt in IDM and the file will always restart downloading but I get the same message. When I turn off Web Shield the problem goes away. So as I stated, this problem only started since versions above 9.0.2008. I even reinstalled 9.0.2008 and the problem goes away. I tried everything I know but to no avail. Has anyone had this problem with Internet Download Manager? Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Oh and just so you know, this doesn't happen if I download a file normally through the browser. I'm using Google Chrome at the moment.

Let me know if these files are ok!

ToeKnee's post above is describing a similar, if not identical, problem as I am.
I have experienced the issues in the three browsers I have installed - Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer.

Any updates? I am probably going to have to switch to a different antivirus program soon, as it's been well over a month and I can no longer tolerate turning the web shield on and off every day for every minor download (0 - 5 mb) this bug affects or whenever I want to watch a 3 minute youtube video.

I want to stay with Avast, it's been great for 5 years! These problems are simply too significant and the Avast team doesn't seem to be having any luck fixing these problems, despite the plethora of different users who have managed to find this thread to add their posts of these issues (I'm sure there are MANY non-tech savvy users who are experiencing these problems and are still not aware Avast is the culprit, and think it's due to a virus, or a hardware issue, or their computer is just old, or what have you).

Truthfully, I think Avast as dropped the ball terribly communication-wise with these bugs. If you know that your program is the cause of these major problems, it is your responsibility to let the end users know and to inform them you are fixing said problems. I'm from an IT background, and the fact that these bugs have been known for over a month now, and no effort has been made by Avast to notify users of these problems, is such poor customer service. A lot of users are uncomfortable turning off their AV software, so they will not try, and are left with a machine full of problems they don't know how to fix because they don't realize it's Avast that is causing the problems.

And sure, you can google this thread, as I and other users in this thread have, but the majority of users do not have the time or are not tech-savvy enough to want to bother doing so. And even with googling, it took a while to narrow down the issue and find this thread amongst all the other Avast problem threads.

Also, the only way to find these potential fixes is by googling and finding this thread. These problems should have been included as a link within the Avast program itself, to at least let users who are experiencing these problems what the causes behind it are, and so that the end user does not potentially waste time trying to figure out what the problem is.

From the poll, nearly half of users are still affected by this bug, even after released fixes. That is a HUGE amount.

Avast, I want to continue using you because I've had no difficulties at all the past 5 years. Believe me, switching to AVG is the last thing I want to do, but you're practically forcing me to with these deal-breaking bugs, problems, and poor customer service communication.

Lucern, the bug that was known to us when this thread and poll was created was fixed very quickly and is already eliminated. Its cause was identified and is removed. It took days, not months.

I can see you are having problems with the download and we are trying to find the cause for that. The logs you sent contained no useful information so we are trying on our own or waiting for another user.

As for your problem, as I have stated several times before, you can easily solve it for your self by switching to Proxy mode, as was described here.

StreamFilter.ini
[General]
UseStreamFilter=0

You are saying that your problem is the same as the one reported by ToeKnee. Are you also using Internet Download Manager ?

Title: Re: Fix for WebShield download issues

Lukas, what you are saying is not true. You claim the problems are solved - why then is the poll option "I do have some issues, running Windows 7 or 8, no change after the fix," the second-highest option, at 35.8%.

You are also ignoring the users who have posted in this thread after the problems have claimed to have been fixed, and a number of their (single) posts stating their problems have gone ignored. I have no idea why this insistence that all the problems are fixed, when new users are coming to this thread and posting continued problems. And you know that even if it's "only" a few users, who has the time to look this problem up (I know I didn't want to bother with this at all, until several weeks passed and it became intolerable), so it can be easily inferred that those users to this thread signify a much larger user base who are also experiencing these problems.

As for the proxy settings, I'll repeat the question I first asked when you suggested it to me, but then ignored and asked for my logs (the first I sent twice, and then I sent a separate set of new logs the third time, and I am still unsure if you received the third set I uploaded to the Avast ftp sever last Friday, as I received no confirmation on this forum).

My question is, if I switch to the proxy, will I need to manually turn it off for future updates of Avast, or will Avast handle the manually changed configurations automatically?
Title: Re: Fix for WebShield download issues
Post by: lucern on January 28, 2014, 11:52:59 PM
Here is another thread in the Avast forum that describes similar or identical problems that I and others have mentioned in this thread. The posts are recent, within the last week, and there are two posts after the January 22nd update that was supposed to have fixed all these problems (and posted 3+ days afterward, so that would have been ample time for their Avast programs to have auto-updated):

"Avast Internet Security 2014 Blocking All Internet Connection" http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=140144.15

Quoting the two last posts in the thread, the first of which whose sentiments I share exactly, and who was likewise forced to uninstall Avast despite being satisfied with its performance over the past 4+ years until this 2014 update:

I am uninstalling AVAST after 4 years of using. Because you've served me well, I thought I'd post on here to let you know the problem.

The Web Shield restricts me in everyday tasks:

e.g.
I like to use YouTube

I have the webshield on, I cannot watch YouTube videos. (Videos load 1-10 seconds then stop, no exceptions)
I turn the webshield off, I can watch YouTube videos. (Videos load normally, no exceptions)

I have held on for a while, I have installed every update you have, and nothing seems to address my problem. It's been a good couple months, so I'm out.

I tried to fix the problem but I can't. I have a new ultrabook and fairly good computer knowledge.

Specs
(http://postimg.org/image/4q58luvnd/)

The above user has been experiencing these issues for months, not days, as you claim.

almost the same problem. I still can get yahoo and facebook but nothing else seems to work .Avast needs to solve soon. System Dell Inspiron, AMD 64, Windows vista, firefox, I went to Avast (paid for 3 years) from Nortons because of poor customer service. If you do a search you will see the problem is with several people.

Please stop dismissing these problems as being "fixed" when they clearly are not.
Title: Re: Fix for WebShield download issues
Post by: lukor on January 29, 2014, 12:15:32 AM
Lucern, webshield is a tool that filters network traffic. Most bugs in the tool manifest themselves as problems with network. I am not saying that we have no bugs in WebShield. Not at all, however presenting this situation in a way that we know about bugs and don't fix them - this is what I might see as insulting of our work.

Yes, there is probably a bug in the code, since you are reporting it. Several guys from the StreamFilter team are trying to find a solution for your problem at the very moment, 23:45 in the middle of the night.

The second highest option 35.8 % does not reflect what has changed after people voted. I have posted this thread when a patch to aswstm.sys was available and since that we have made several bug fixes and we have also released a new version. Several problems, such as the problem with Dropbox upload (see elsewhere), was fixed with the 2013 update, and these fixes were introduced after the vote you are referring to.

So, I what I claim is that more problems were fixed that is recorded in this poll. You might believe otherwise of course and since on your system the WebShield component does not work correctly, you have every right to be unhappy and even angry at us. Sorry for that.

This is why I have suggested you to switch to the proxy mode, it is functionally equivalent to the streamfilter and shouldn't have the same issues. If you are already angry, there is no need for you to be more angry troubleshooting the bug for us if you don't want to. If it's just you on the whole earth, you would be happy and problem solved. That is however not very probable, so others might help us find out more about the issue or we might be eventually able to reproduce the issue ourselves.

My answer is: If you switch to proxy you don't have to do anything manually again. You'll be switched to proxy for ever and running what you were running in avast 9.0.2008. Your protection will be the same as it ever was. And it is possible that in the future we might turn you back on on streamfilter mode. Currently that's not what we do or plan to do - so if you would like to give streamfilter a try in the future, you would have to do it your self (I imagine how angry you might be if all of a sudden all your problems would come up again just from the fact that we thought that this was fixed since it was fixed for other users - yet in your case, things might be different)

Second answer might be: We might also switch all users to proxy. We would do that if the number of problematic cases would be higher. Say something more than 39 / 80.000.000. The number of users with problems is of course much higher than 39 in every 80 millions (but nowhere near 39% or even 3% percent), we are aware of that and the guys on the support lines and emails are trying to help each individual. There are users with WebShield proxy problems and there are users with WebShield StreamFilter problems and the support team is trying to help both parties. Since the 9.0.2013 the number of users with problems with Streamfilter is much lower and that also support my belief that many bugs were fixed.

Third comment: when I say a bug was fixed, I mean that we have seen a problem, we have found out what the cause of the problem was and we have removed the caused == fix. Then, we have verified that particular problem went away on systems where it was previously visible. I can not possibly guarantee that there are other cases which are not yet covered which we haven't seen yet. However, I never acknowledge a fix here, if we haven't fixed the bug.

So, to sum up: what you are saying is not true. We are not aware of a unfixed bug for months and we don't ignore it. Other, unfixed bugs are still being researched and will be fixed as soon as we can.

Regarding you logs:
firstly: you've uploaded an empty folder.
secondly: you've uploaded a log file without any captured traffic == no problem
third: you've uploaded usable logs, which are being looked at, nothing particular that might help is recorded, as it seems now. That's why I have sent you a step by step info, how to record better logs - only if you want of course.

Regarding the threads:
E.g. Lermanfl is mentioning he is running Windows Vista - this a typical case, when shouting does not help: Vista is not capable of executing streamfilter code, aswstm.sys driver does not run there. Clearly this is not something related to the case we are talking here about. No patch might possibly help, since the driver being patched is not even installed on Windows Vista. Even the bugs in the HTTP parser code related to other issues is not related to this specific (sad) case - this is COMPLETELY UNRELATED.

So my question is: What about proxy mode? Does that help at your case? Since if it does not, we might stop searching for a bug in the streamfilter code - the problem must be elsewhere (possibly same as Lermanfl is reporting, but definitely unrelated to stream filter). So far we believe it is a streamfilter code, since the code is new and had smaller time to settle. Even if it eventually will turn out that it wasn't there - it wouldn't hurt us to make a thorough revision of the code (which is what we do now) and the testing tools being implemented these days will come handy in future as well - but definitely all these efforts wouldn't (in such case) help to solve your specific issue.

Lukas:

1. You sent the step by step info after the first folder I uploaded did not work.
The second time I uploaded it and the logs were not useful to you.
The third time I uploaded the logs after replicating the download problem a second time, and unless there are more instructions on how to upload a folder through ftp (even though it seems you've received the files) I don't understand what instructions you're referring to.

2. I find your insinuation that I am simply "angry" and don't want to help the Avast team insulting. What in the world would compel me to create this account and post 15+ posts and following the instructions you've requested of me if I didn't want to help. Trust me, being on these forums is the last thing I want to be spending time on, but I did so in the hopes it would improve your software, for I and other users. I have lost a lot of time I could have been working on something useful by posting in this thread and troubleshooting. If I didn't have such a positive experience with Avast in the past 5 years I would not have dreamed of bothering and would have immediately uninstalled the program from the start. But I did not, because I had a better impression of Avast at the time. It was my positive experience with Avast that compelled me to join this forum and try to help, instead of waiting for someone else to do so which is what I would have normally done.

I mistakenly thought reporting the problems experienced would be beneficial to your team (ie: in many of the posts with these problems, users mention they experienced the problems after installing on a clean machine - that is the same as my case, maybe that's useful information, maybe not), not viewed as an attack or insult, or "anger". It's called criticism, deal with it like a professional.

Also, why are your programmers working at midnight. Send them home. Unless they are volunteers and doing this as a pastime? In which case I'm not sure what you're trying to imply by bringing up that they are working in the middle of the night. If they're not volunteers and are paid employees, that just makes me question how Avast treats their workers, they should not be required to work in the middle of the night unless you have night shifts or something.

3. Thank you for answering my question about the proxy.

4. I did see the Dropbox thread, which is why I did not mention it. I am glad that user's problems were fixed!

5. Obviously as I have tried to stress to you, this thread is not indicative of every Avast user (39/80,000,000 as you like to put it). I stand by my opinion that a few forum posters claiming to have problems is more than likely to indicate many more users experiencing those problems, and many of those who are not tech-savvy enough to realize Avast is even the cause, and as such will never see this thread, forum, or ever make a post. That doesn't mean they don't exist.

6. Re: the threads. You don't comment on the user cm92 who has been experiencing these issues for months.
Perhaps they were more intelligent than I for uninstalling when they did, instead of me who has wasted what have been hours (over the course of several days since my first post) in this thread trying to help you with bug reports and logs, and I do not believe I was rude or aggressive, unless pointing out facts and linking other threads to support my point that I am not the "only user on earth" (as you so colorfully worded it) is somehow rude.

Anyway, thank you for attempting to solve the problem, but I guess if I'm in the hypothetically 3% of users who are experiencing this I guess I and anyone else experiencing this don't matter to your team and it's not that strong of an issue for you, so I'll be uninstalling Avast after 5 years of being a satisfied customer and highly recommending it to people as the best AV option. I regret creating this account in the hopes it would help other users experiencing these frustrating issues. I should not have bothered.

Goodbye and thanks for the past 5 years.

Lukas,

I just saw the message you sent. Thank you. I will consider capturing the logs, but it's difficult for me to justify spending additional time on this issue, as I simply don't have the time.

Thank you again for your attempts to help.

Lukas:

Haven't you received an IM from me a few hours ago?

Lucern,

we are really working on the issues with WebShield, we have solved many of them and made it work much better for many users. We have released a version update, because we considered the issues important. All of the issues we saw and been able to reproduce either in our lab or with our users were fixed.

I am really sorry, your's wasn't among the fixed ones, this however does not mean we don't care and even up to the point, that me and other developers would rather work on it in their free time (at nights).

I appreciate your effort with the logs. Thank you for that and sorry for not stressing that more in my previous messages.

Since it didn't help us find the cause, and since you've already spent quite some time with it, I guess it is the right time to switch to the proxy mode. I still can not understand why are you against such solution. You can change the number from 0 to 1 and back anytime you want - it is nothing permanent. It does not mean we wouldn't continue searching for bugs in streamfilter part of the WebShield and it will also help us identify if at your's case this helps or not.

Lukas.

PS:one last comment, the streamfilter was released 18th of December. It's only about one month since that, that is why I have a tendency to over react to statements that this or this is part of the same bug for months.

Lukas,

Thank you, I am sorry the logs weren't more helpful. I truly appreciate the work that developers like yourself do to maintain Avast, and understand your dedication to your users. I understand that your team released the December patch very quickly, and it fixed most users' problems, and you should all be highly commended for your work. I apologize if my frustrations with the problems I have personally encountered came across as too aggressive. It was not my intention.

Earlier today, I decided to try uninstalling and reinstalling Avast, just to see if that would help. I used the Avast Removal Tool in safe mode.
I apologize in advance for what I'm about to write next, as it's going to sound like I am making it up. So, you only have my word, and I understand if it sounds far-fetched.

After uninstalling in safe mode, rebooting, and installing Avast, the program caused my internet as whole to become unresponsive. No webpages would load. They all timed out. When I tried to turn the Web Shield off, the entire Avast program froze. I've no idea why or what caused such behavior. I tried closing and reopening the program several times, but on subsequent times the program would freeze on launch.

I was eventually able to turn the web shield off, but now even doing that didn't change anything. Nothing in-browser would load.

I gave one last try by uninstalling through the control panel, rebooting, and installing Avast again. The same problems persisted - no webpages would load, and Avast would freeze if I tried to launch it.

Unfortunately, I am unable to continue troubleshooting with you, due to Avast not seeming to work on my computer anymore. :( I'm currently using a different AV program installed that is allowing me to use my computer normally again.

I am glad that these issues at least don't appear to be widespread. I know your team will be able to isolate the problem, and I hope to be able to use Avast once again in the future.

Thanks again for your assistance.

That's really scary, what you have just described. sorry for that.
We'll try to retest the safe-mode uninstall scenario you have used. So far I have no idea what could have caused such a massive problem.

Thanks, and sorry again. Definitely something on your PC that avast! really hates!  :'(

Hope to see you again someday in the future.
Bye.

Hallo,

I have found that issue with corrupted downloads has been reported to Microsoft and then Microsoft has released a hotfix for that problem. You can find the hotfix here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2789397/en

I can ask all users affected by the problem to try if it helps or not.

Additionally, We will appreciate if you can provide exact version of your OS (Version, service pack and platform(x32/x64), plus information about your network card.

Hi,
it really seems that the hotfix mentioned by Zdenek might be a cause for several issues. I have a request, could you guys - anyone with the problem, but especially Lucern (if you are still with us at least via the forum - sorry for bothering you again) run the following command to list the installed hotfixes on your system.

1. click Start \ Run (or Win+R if you are on Windows 8 )
2. type:
Quote
systeminfo >%userprofile%\desktop\systeminfo.txt

3. send us the file systeminfo.txt created on your desktop. You can send it directly to me via email to rypacek (at) avast.com

Thank you very much, guys.

I last posted on this thread on 30th December 2013 - the issue still stands! When WebSheild is enabled, my fiance's window 7 laptop cannot access the internet, IE just spins around (egg timer equivalent) and doesn't load correctly. When I disable WebSheild, access is instant regained and the laptop acts properly. So, for the last 3 months, I've simply disabled WebSheild.

On a prompt today, I updated Avast on her lap top to version ending in 2014. Exactly the same issue - websheild on, no internet, websheild off, internet just fine.

Now, as stated before, I'm no computer geek, so without asking me to rebuild the laptop, change the registry etc etc, is there a simple way to fix this issue? (I was hoping that loading the update, that you would have repaired Avast by now)...

I am experiencing the  problem where the browser does not always load web pages. Sometimes nothing appears. Other times some of the page appears, but in both cases the spinning status symbol continues to spin, with the browser waiting for the remainder of the message. It can only be cured by stopping the page transfer, and then refreshing the page.

It is affecting mostly https:// pages.  The problem is consistent with certain web sites. Other websites are problem free, even with https:// pages.

I am using Windows 8.1, completely up to date and using Avast 9.0.2018.

When Webshield is switched off I don't have a problem. I have tried switching off just the script scanning, but this does not solve the problem. When I have tested this problem I have cleared the browsers cache before each test, to make sure the conditions are the same.

I have done some monitoring with Microsoft Network Monitor V3.4, and there seem to be 'Segment lost' messages coming back from the server, when the problem occurs. I have collected and saved the .CAP (capture) file.

I was going to attach the .CAP file collected when the problem occurred. Unfortunately, I can't as the forum doesn't allow such attached files.

Is there any way I can get the file to someone who could analyse and diagnose the problem from here? (The file is 178KB .CAP file.)

Hi,

I had a lovely PM from a 'developer' offering to investigate my issue but requires me to send him a 'binary file'. Just to let him know (Zdenek) that although I can apparently receive PMs, I am 'unallowed' to send one! If you can get a forum mod to let me send them I'll gladly send you the file. Thank you, stephen

Hi Zdenek,

Can't reply via PM, so here is the information.

The Details tab in the Properties tab for the aswstm.sys file (which is in my C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder) tells me the following :-

File description:   Stream filter
Type:   System file
File Version:   9.0.2018.391
Product name:   avast! Antivirus
Product version:   9.0.2018.391
Copyright:   Copyright (c) 2013 AVAST Software
Size:   66.1 KB
Date Modified:   22/04/2014 08:27
Language:   English (United States)
Original filename:   aswStm.sys

The checksums are :-

 File: aswstm.sys
CRC-32: 183ffb52
   MD4: 3159867e85416424bb1ed1008182d679
   MD5: e458d8d20af6fe3f4784c18e8a1f02c3
 SHA-1: f27410d79df5f0d4089e7b27d611e0b770d3c387

I have attached a copy of the .CAP file encoded with a Base64 converter which I used at
the site http://www.motobit.com/util/base64-decoder-encoder.asp
(I have tested that the file attached does decode to produce an exact binary copy of the original .CAP file, and that the resultant .CAP file is still acceptable to the Microsoft Network Monitor.

I have the same problem: Update avast! = no internet. I hope I didn't further screw things up by uninstalling through the control panel. I found avast clear afterwards but it can't remove what it can't see I guess. So should I download and re-install avast, or can I still run avastclear and get the proper uninstall?
Thanks, Keith Bradley

Proper procedure to totally remove avast is to 1st uninstall through Control panel
followed by the use of the removal tool. (avastclear)
After you update avast!, are you allowing avast! access through your firewall ???
Maybe you need to clear out the rules in your firewall, reboot and allow avast! access through the firewall ???

I'm not sure about my firewall. I haven't done anything with it ever. I  did a lot of diagnosis with Microsoft and Bell over the phone and the final conclusion was to re-install windows. I tried a system reboots and lots of commands and nothing - nobody could get my computer to recognize my internet connection. I have 3 computers and it's the only one with avast installed.

3 hours on the phone with IT and I was about to give up. The last thing we tried was deleting the windows network drivers and restarting. There were no changes. Then as a last attempt I did another system reboot and lo and behold I'm back online.  The drivers re-installed and everything came back. Hell, even avast updated!

I have the exact same symptoms as TFC above. Web pages that are simple load ok, others especially those with maps, either don't load or only load partially. Disabling the web shield allows most sites to load ok, but some still don't load properly.
[for a difficult site try http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo_nwe.html  - this used to work fine on my machines, but hopeless since mid April]
I have 2 PCs, a desktop and a laptop, both with W7 SP0, Firefox 28, and Avast. Both show the same symptoms.
I was already wondering if my Avast set of programs had got corrupted and whether to uninstall and start again.  I see there's a post earlier referring to a Windows hotfix, but it says it only applies to W7 SP1.  So should I try it anyway, or if not, what else?

Although microsoft is constantly rolling out crappy software designs, it is preferable to install windows patches and service pack in order to avoid reliability problems.

Since Décember 14, I have problems with the Web Shield (see my posts on 15 Jan 14, 17 Jan 14, 20 Jan 14, on this topic).
Since  20 January till now, I work with Avast 2014.9.0.2012, but with the necessary change in WebShield.ini (UseStreamFilter=0).

After having waited for Avast team to work on the problem, I have installed the version 2014.9.0.2018 (Fresh install).
And all went back wrong (internet connection problems on video sites, ADSL rate test, https sites. Freeze of programs, ...).

So I have implemented the WebShield.ini change as before, but no results.

The dis-activation of AOS in Firefox gives no results.

The only way to solve the Web Shield problems is to dis-activate the Web Shield (in Parametres, Active protection).

So I begin to be despaired !
What do I have to do ?

Win 7 Home Premium SP1 French, Avast 2014.9.0.2018, Zone Alarm 9.2.105.000, Spybot 1.6.2.0

MPAc, TFC & any next affected user.

I can see that you are both using ZoneAlarm as your firewall. Is possible to disable (or better remove) the Zone Alarm and test again if the issue still persist? From my analysis of the TFC logs, interference between AVAST! and another traffic filtering product can be reason of reported problems...

Thank you

Hi Zdenek

Unfortunately, switching off Zone Alarm didn't prevent the problem when I tried it.

Switching it off, may not be enough (as mentioned by Zdenek) if the low level drivers/traffic filtering may well still be active. So you may need to try uninstalling it as the next step and as a temporary measure use your Operating System firewall.

DavidR

Thank you for pointing that out for me.

I really wanted to avoid that, but I gritted my teeth and uninstalled it anyway. That seemed to fix the problem with my 'problem' https page, but with Windows firewall I ran into problems with quite ordinary pages at first, although that cleared after a bit.

I have now reinstalled ZoneAlarm, and I do have the problem back again as we started. So, it would seem the problem is an interaction between Avast and Zone Alarm.

Why use a firewall that's not to cause conflicts. There are many others to choose from.
There's also nothing wrong with using the one that comes with Windows.

A conflict is a conflict. We don't know yet where the problem is. It may be in ZoneAlarm, but maybe it is in Avast? I don't know.
